Welcome to our latest newsletter.

After the disappointment of relegation last season, the buzz of being a Posh Supporter is as exciting as it ever was, with the football club taking very positive action to gain promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt.

Can Posh really achieve 3 Promotions in 4 Seasons???

The appointment of Gary Johnson as Manager late last season was the first sign of intent from Darragh. Gary‟s subsequent signings during the closed season, and the fantastic play we have seen on the pitch in the opening two games of this season has shown what a good choice Gary‟s appointment was. I have written an article about all the comings and goings within the Posh squad, later in this newsletter.

The Posh Supporters‟ Trusts 8th Annual General Meeting, will take place on Monday 19th October. Full details are inside this newsletter, and I urge all members to join us there as we outline our plans for the future under the stewardship of a new Chairman. As well as the usual AGM formalities, Posh chief executive Bob Symns, and Posh commercial manager Alex Harris will be there for open discussion about the football club. Mick Robinson will also hold his traditional posh quiz.

We will stage our 4th „New Posh Fans Initiative‟ in October when we play Swindon. Preparation for this is well under way, and you will see from John Henson‟s write up on page 11, that we need more volunteers for 2 hours on 12th September to make it another success for us and the football club. Please help if you possibly can.

It is important for the football club, that we keep the Trust moving in the right direction and remain active with new initiatives. We have regular meetings with them to discuss any issues that affect the supporters and to seek to further improve the match-day experience for all fans. Pete's 'Memory' Lane ~ “Hagan's Heroes' - In the Beginning – At Last 'The League' Posh v Wrexham Welcome to another new season of which I am sure will prove to be a very successful one for Gary, Darragh and the boys. This is a special season for the Club as we commemorate 50 years since we gained admission to the Football League.

After competing 26 years as a non-league Club in the Midland League our big day finally arrived on the 20 August 1960, when we entertained Wrexham in League Div.4. I remember that day as if it was only yesterday. Let me take you back to those magical days of 50 years ago. Mass hysteria had broken out in the City with many shops decorating their windows in the club colours of blue and white. Manager Jimmy Hagan thought it was necessary to strengthen his side that had come up from the Midland League. Jimmy had great ambitions for Posh and obviously did not wish to take any chances, especially with the Club trying for many years to gain their more than deserved election into the League.

Jimmy signed 10 players in readiness for our new campaign in the League and our opening match at home to Wrexham. In came experienced Johnny Anderson, a former Scotland International and Leicester City goalkeeper who had played for 10 years making 261 appearances for his Club. Keith Ripley a wing half signed from Mansfield Town, previously he played for Leeds United and Norwich City. Former Chelsea and Eire International right back Dick Whittaker came in to add more experience to the defence.

Posh allowed goalkeeper Tom Daley a move to Gainsborough Trinity in exchange for a relatively unknown in half back Derek Norris.

Our biggest named signing was of course centre forward Terry Bly. Terry was instrumental in scoring the goals that led 3rd Div. Norwich City into the Semi-Finals of the FA Cup 1958/59 beating the likes of Cardiff City, Tottenham Hotspur, Sheffield United and Manchester United along the way. So could this man keep up with our 'tradition' of great goalscoring centre forwards of the past? (Taft, Donaldson and Rayner).

Other signings were again from Mansfield Town in right back Ray Hogg and left winger John Taylor and Chris Coates from our neighbours Wisbech Town, Gerald Graham from Blackpool and Trevor Atkins from Exeter City. Strong man Derek Chadwick was given a free transfer and joined Cambridge City. Hagan did however retain the rest of the team players who served us so proudly from their Midland League days.

On the 20 August 1960, with the biggest day in Posh's history finally arriving, it bore the similar excitement for me as it did for those great cup days. Hagan's team was:

Walls, Stafford, Walker, Rayner, Rigby, Norris, Hails, Emery, Bly, Smith, McNamee. Making their Football League débuts were Stafford, Norris, McNamee and Emery. So with the exception of Norris and Bly, Hagan kept faith with the Midland League side. This did however surprise many Posh fans who thought Hagan was being too sentimental in his selection, especially when in only the previous week, during a public practice match in which an astonishing crowd of 5,792 turned up at London Road, the first team attack slammed 9 goals past the same defence selected to face Wrexham! But Hagan replied “it was only a trial match and not a flat out 'proper' game,” and his team had not let him down in the past and therefore the rest of the newcomers would have to prove their worth. Another surprise in the team selection was Jim Rayner our usual goalscoring centre forward was selected to play at wing half!

Waiting with baited breath, with my relations sitting in the stand, the fanfare of the “Post Horn Gallop” signalled the arrival of our old 'warhorse', Captain Norman Rigby to proudly lead out his team. With glorious sunshine beating down the crowd were now in a frenzy after queuing for more than an hour before the gates were opened.

The Wrexham Chairman presented a silver salver to our Chairman, Mr Cyril Palmer to mark this historic occasion just prior to the kick-off.

The game kicked off with Posh on the attack but it was not going to be easy as Wrexham were giving us an equal match, but with 25 minutes on the clock the first goal came from who else but Denis Emery, Billy Hails placed a fine pass to Denis who coolly shot the ball just inside the penalty area along the ground into the corner of the net. The crowd erupted and rose to the great man, 'Denis the rebel' had spent most of the previous season under Club suspension so how pleasing to see he had settled his differences with the Club.

Wrexham however refused to lie down and indeed could easily have equalised but poor finishing let them down. Walls also made a lucky save by deflecting a shot with his foot out to safety.

In the second half with the game finally balanced that man Emery nearly did it again from a fine pass from Bly, he was unlucky to hit the post in the 68th minute. On 75 minutes left winger Peter McNamee received a great pass from Ray Smith and in familiar style a magic moment from 'Mac' came as he jinked round the full back and cut inside to dribble the ball on to his right foot and coolly struck the ball into the corner of the net. Jubilant fans now were celebrating the 2-0 lead. The game was now as good as over and it certainly was in the 80th minute when a lob into the area from Emery was headed home by Terry Bly, making it a fantastic 3-0 win. So Posh had done it, and Hagan had proved the doubters wrong of his team selection. Newcomer Norris had an outstanding game for Posh and Bly also made a useful début, but glamour boy Emery showed some of his old magic.

Meanwhile the Posh Reserves were making their début in the Football Combination away to Notts. County, giving a good account of themselves but narrowly losing by 3 goals to 2.

National newspapers described the match against Wrexham as a credit to the 4th Div. The game attracted a crowd of 17,294, (contrary to National newspapers who stated the attendance was 17,564) and the highest of the day in both Div.3 and Div.4. BBC recorded the second half live. Incidentally the referee was Arthur W Luty from Leeds and he had refereed Gateshead's last match in the Football League the previous season. Of course Gateshead were the team to be replaced into the League by Posh! After the match Jimmy Hagan said “we want to go straight into the 3rd Division” - a tall order or was it? UP THE POSH – Pete Supporters Direct AGM Report by Adrian Woolley 13 June 2010, at the Institute of Technology and Engineering. Savoy Place London.

The day began at 6.15am which believe me is not a great time on a Sunday morning. Still a shower, a bowl of cereal and two strong cups of coffee later I set off and met our bleary eyed Chairman, Barry Bennett on a wind swept platform at Peterborough station.

Our train departed at 7.40am. 2 hours and 30 minutes later we arrived at Kings Cross (Bloody Engineering works). A £18 cab ride to The Strand and we just made it in time for my 4th coffee of the day and it was still not even10.30am.

Shepherded into a very grand conference room we were joined by members of approx another 50 supporters trusts. Here I realised we were a much bigger organisation than I had imagined. Apparently there are 160 Trusts with almost 130,000 members, registered with Supporters Direct.

With the formalities of the AGM out of the way a now wide awake Barry and I sat in on a presentation by The Supporters Trust of Bristol City. This was most interesting and Bristol City seems to have a great relationship with their Supporters Trust who have over 5,000 members in touch via their website. (now there’s a thought) Next up was a presentation by the Newport County Trust, their club has literally been saved by the Trust. Here members are actively involved in the day to day running of their football club and even man the turnstiles and catering outlets on match days. After the two presentations there was time to mingle with like minded people.

Clearly, from the comments we received and the questions about the initiatives we implement, the Posh Supporters Trust is held in high regard by Supporters Direct and many other Trusts. We are forward in our thinking but clearly there is far more to be achieved. SO WATCH THIS SPACE!

Up The POSH! Ady.

We Need YOUR Help Please! New Posh Fans Initiative ‘4’ Story so far… Over the past three seasons and in partnership with the football club, the Posh Trust has invited nearly 3,000 ‘New Fans’ to London Road through our New Posh Fan Initiatives. The New Fans Initiative introduces new supporters to the club by giving them a taste of Football league action for free and the opportunity to purchase a discounted ticket for a follow up game. The scheme has proved extremely successful and follow up questionnaires sent to the ‘new fans’ has shown that many newcomers have since become regular visitors to Posh home games. Next up… The Trust are organising a fourth ‘New Posh Fans Initiative’ for the home game against Swindon Town on Saturday 16th October. The planning and preparation for the day is already well underway and over 800 new fans will walk through the turnstiles courtesy of the Trust and PUFC. The Trust are targeting new housing developments in Yaxley for this game and will be leafleting around 3,000 homes in the weeks prior to the game. As well as the offer of a discounted ticket for the subsequent home game against Brighton and Hove Albion, the ‘new fans’ will be sent a questionnaire later in the season with the chance to win further tickets and to inform the Trust of how they found their experience and London Road and whether they have come back since. What can I do…? In order for the scheme to be a success, we need many volunteers to help us distribute leaflets in the Yaxley area on Sunday 12th September. If you are able to give up an hour or so of your time to help then please contact organiser John Henson on 07908 500504 or email: [email protected] The future… In the long term, we aim to cover lots more areas in and around the City to help find and convert many new fans. Success is not just in terms of regular new fans though, we will also have succeeded if we help to gain more interest in the club and make more people aware of their local team. Your help is much appreciated and makes a huge difference. John Henson. Secretary PST Welcome to the Posh Supporters' Trusts On-Line Shopping.
