They are currently ranked No. 1 and the men’s team No. 5. USC has both teams in the top 5 for the fi rst time since the 2008 season. 3/24 4/6 4/13 4/20 4/27 5/4 5/11 5/18 5/26 6/1 USC Men 7 5 5 5 4 4 5 6 5 USC Women 8 7 7 4 1 2 2 2 1 USC TRACK AND FIELD HISTORY - USC is well known as one of the most successful athletic programs in the history of the NCAA, with 122 men’s and women’s national championships. The Trojans have won far more NCAA team and individual titles combined than any other univer- sity. However, the most dominant force in USC’s slate of athletic programs is not the baseball team (12 College World Series titles) or the foot- ball squad (nine national championships) but the men’s track and fi eld program, with an unprecedented 28 NCAA titles (including nine straight, 1935-43). In fact, in the history of the NCAA, only the Oklahoma State wrestling program (31) has more national titles than USC men’s outdoor track and fi eld. Trojan athletes have dominated the track and fi eld scene for decades. From the exploits of sprinter Charlie Paddock and thrower Clarence “Bud” Houser in the 1920s and 1930s, sprinter Mel Patton in the 1940s, thrower Parry O’Brien in the 1950s,sprinter Lennox Miller and pole vaulter Bob Seagren in the 1960s, sprinter Quincy Watts in the 1980s, to four-time NCAA hammer champion Balazs Kiss (only the fi fth collegian to win four in a row) in the 1990s and World Champion hurdler Felix Sanchez in the 2000s, USC is synonymous with track and fi eld excellence. TROJAN PROGRAM IN GOOD HANDS WITH SMITH GILBERT - USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert is in her sec- ond season at the helm of the Trojans’ track and fi eld program. Already she has guided the women’s team to the 2014 and 2015 MPSF indoor titles, their fi rst two seasons in the conference. The men’s team placed second at the MPSFs in 2015, their fi rst year competing in the conference. She guided both the men’s and women’s teams to a second place fi nishes in the her fi rst two Pac-12 Champion- ships and was named the 2015 Pac-12 Men’s & Women’s Coach of the Year, the fi rst woman to win the Men’s Coach of the Year honor. She has also been named the 2014 and 2015 MPSF Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year, the 2014 and 2015 USTFCCCA West Re- gion Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year and the 2014 USTFCCCA West Region Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year. She was named the USC Director of Track & Field on June 17, 2013, following the retirement of Ron Allice who guided the program for 19 sea- sons. Smith Gilbert was a six-time Conference USA Coach of the Year at Central Florida and guided them to a program-best fi fth- place fi nish at the 2013 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Also in her six seasons at UCF, her athletes were named All- Americans more than 100 times and set more than 100 school records. Her team won four-straight Conference-USA titles (2010-13), the most in conference history. UCF’s fi fth-place fi nish in 2013 was the best fi nish by a non-BCS school since 2000. Smith Gilbert went to UCF after fi ve seasons (2003-07) as an assistant coach at Tennessee and three as an assistant coach at Alabama (2000-03). TROJANS’ OLYMPIC GLORY - USC athletes of the present and past won 25 medals at the 2012 London Olympics, 12 golds, 9 silvers and 4 bronze. Six of those medal were won by USC track and fi eld athletes and Trojan track athletes have claimed 46 gold medals in Olympic competition. USC’s 25 total medals and 12 gold medals in 2012 were school records for a single Olympics, breaking the previous highs of 24 total medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and 10 golds at both the 1948 London Games and the 2008 Olympics. Troy’s 12 gold medals in London tied with Stanford for the most by a university in 2012. USC continued its streak of having won a gold medal at every Sum- mer Olympics from 1912. If USC athletes had competed as a country in 2012, they would have placed sixth in the gold medal standings at the London Games and 11th in overall medals. Forty-one athletes with a USC affi liation competed in London (tied with Stanford for most from any U.S. university). They competed in seven sports and represented 18 countries. Twenty-four of USC’s London Olympians were women and 22 were competing in their fi rst Games. Seven coaches with USC ties served on Olympic staffs in 2012. In refl ecting on USC’s success over the years at the Olympics, it is amazing to note that a Trojan athlete has won at least one gold medal in every track and fi eld event except the 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m, steeplechase, triple jump and javelin. ALL-STAR COACHING STAFF - Caryl Smith Gilbert has put together an impressive coaching staff that looks like an all-star roster. Well- decorated throws coach Dan Lange is one of the top assistants in the country and has been joined on staff by David Freeman (distances), Jai- me Nieto (jumps), Loreal Smith and Quincy Watts. Also, USC has DeeDee Trotter and Ryan Wilson on staff as volunteer assistant coaches. Watts was an Olympic gold medalist in the 400m and 4x400m relay, Nieto was the 2003, 2004 and 2012 U.S. high jump champion, Trotter has an Olympic bronze medal in the 400m and two golds as part of the USA 4x400m relay team, Wilson was the 2013 USA 110m HH champion. The previous USC record and Drake Stadium record was 10.02 set by James Sanford in 1980 and the Pac-12 Meet record was 10.03 by UCLA’s Ato Boldon in 1996. De Grasse also captured the conference 200m title with a time of 20.05 (-0.1) after setting a PR and Can- dian record of 20.03 (-0.1) in the prelims on May 16, which ties him for second on USC’s all-time list. De Grasse also broke the USC Loker Stadium 100m dash record by running 10.04 (+0.4) to win at the Dual Meet on May 3. That time tied the Dual Meet record set by Boldon in 1996, the same year he earned a bronze medal in the event at the Olympics. The previous Loker Stadium record of 10.07 was co-held by Aaron Brown and current teammate BeeJay Lee. The junior also took second in the 200m dash with a time of 20.74 (+1.8) and ran the second leg for the winning 4x100m relay which ran 39.42. Morgan was the 110m HH champion at the 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy with a time of 13.28, then competed for the Trojans at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships and placed fi fth in the 110m HH of 14.21w. He than ran 13.84 (+3.5w) to take second at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 3. He had the fastest qualifying time at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships of 13.96, but had to pull up at the lead mid-race in the fi nals. Other USC track athletes with football ties are freshman woman’s sprinter Ky Westbrook who’s father is former NFL receiver Michael Westbrook and freshman men’s high jumper Randall Cunningham is the son of former NFL great quarterback Randall Cunningham.

NOTHING TYNIA ABOUT GAITHER - USC redshirt junior Tynia Gaither had a great fi rst season at USC earning All-American honors outdoors in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m and gaining indoor All-America honors in the 200m. COLLATZ REMAINS SECOND, BUT BEATS OLD USC DISCUS RECORD - All-American senior discus thrower Alexandra Collatz entered the season less than two feet off the school record in the discus throw with a PR of 187-6 (57.15m). Kate Hutchinson held the USC record in the event with a best of 189-5 (57.73) set in 2006 and at the same meet in which Tera Novy set the new stan- dard of 193-11 (59.12m), Collatz surpassed Hutchinson with a throw of 189-8 (57.82m) to take second at the CSULA Twilight Meet. Collatz thus remains second on USC’s all-time discus throw list and is currently seventh in the country. Collatz had a best throw of 179-11 (54.84m) to place fourth at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships in the discus throw. In just her second heptathlon ever, Iuel scored 5,378 points to win the Pac-12 title and move into seventh place on USC’s all-time list. Iuel clinched the title by winning the 200m with a then-PR of 2:12.43, becoming the fi rst Trojan since 1996 and fi rst conference freshman since 2004 to win the event. After all of the conference championships were fi nished, Iuel had dropped to 31st in the country in the event and was four spots outside of the declared athletes to qualify for the NCAA Champion- ships. She did, however, qualify in the 400m IH with a then-PR of 58.10 at the NCAA West Regional which moved her into ninth on USC’s all-time 400m IH list. Iuel place 18th at the NCAAs in the 400m IH with a time of 59.74. Iuel set fi ve PRs at the 2015 Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships to score a new career best of 5,610 points and fi nish third. USC LOOKS TO BRING BACK THE HAMMER - The USC throws program under the direction of Dan Lange has been very strong, but none stronger than the success of the hammer throwers and this season is no different. Due to the preseason surgery of Jenny Ozorai and the emergency appendectomy to Remy Conatser just days before the NCAA Regionals in 2014, USC did not have a male or female athlete score in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships for the fi rst time since 1992, ending a streak of 21 consecutive seasons with an NCAA scorer in the event. During those 21 seasons, USC claimed six hammer throw titles and had 16 fi nishes in the top three. USC has had 13 women’s hammer throwers score at the NCAAs in the past 16 seasons and has had 17 men’s athletes score in the last 22 seasons.
