Over the final couple of months of 2019 we said farewell to three of our old Football League players, all of whom I had personally seen play for us here at Haig Avenue and two of whom, by a fortunate coincidence, had been signed from Bradford Park Avenue. These notes may thus raise a few memories for the more elderly of our visitors today.

The first to pass away was famously the last playing when week-end leave allowed. Denis also survivor of the Blackpool team that played in the joined us from Park Avenue, where he had spent great Matthews (Mortensen!) The linesman is well placed to see George’s header cross the line to make it 4-1. Stats & Facts Connor Woods became the 19th player to score a hat-trick in a cup match in Non League Connor also became the 449th player to score for Southport in all NL competitions The remaining teams in the competition are Bootle who play Skelmersdale on 18 Feb, Runcorn Town play Tranmere on 19 Feb and City Of Liverpool were scheduled to have played Everton last Tuesday. Edvard Servuts was 16 years and 171 days old when he came off the bench. That is certainly younger than any player to make a Non League league start and as far as the records show he is the youngest to have made an appearance for the club. The gate of 261 was a new club record for Pilkington beating the previous best of 224. Plenty of Sandgrounders in the crowd. #ONEPORT13

It seems everyone had a good website updated by 9 and another away day run down as the team coach had to make stop as complete. they would have been at the ground far too early. Not a bad set up at Evesham which brought up ground number 245 for me and 151 for Julia. The thoughts coming from the locals however were they couldn’t wait to get back to Gloucester which you can understand. A 46 mile round trip to get to your home ground is not ideal. The Press Box was tiny and no room for visiting press which I think is against league rules but given the circumstances you have to accept it and do the best you can. It was laptops on the knees with the one good thing being there was plenty of space given the low numbers in attendance. I had thought we could be on for our lowest ever Conference North away gate (currently stands at 251 at Solihull in 2007/08) but the 334 came in at ninth lowest. It was helped along by around 50 travelling supporters scattered around the terraces and in the stand, a number of who are not regular travellers but those who like to visit a new ground. The programme was a £2, 16 pager with 5 pages of ads not a lot of reading material. As for the game Southport lined up with, Hanford, Mohammed, Doyle, Winnard, Astles, Morgan, Benjamin, Oliver, Green (Ogle 90), Sampson, Bauress. The Ground
