A year later, the initiative of Dumitru Vatamaniuc – an honorary member of the Romanian Academy ‐ resulted in the creation of the ʺBucovinaʺ Institute in the frame of the Romanian Academy, where he established a partnership with another similar institute in Augsburg (Germany), having the same name ‐ ʺBukowinaʺ Institute. Generally speaking, the ideas of the Romanian researchers coincide (up to a point) with those of the German ones, but they are definitely apart of those of the Ukrainian researchers who belong to the Bukovina center of the University of Chernivtsi (Ukraine). Their theories are fabricated and not based on documents. Supporting the Slavic origin of Bukovina inhabitants, printing maps of Bukovina which includes whole Moldavia and Bessarabia, the Ukrainians do nothing but to show another way to justify the reason of maintaining a territory inside its current border, distorting the vision of an authentic research and driving it to a wrong direction – to mystification. The present paper is a part of the horizon and trajectory of the Romanian research, keeping the line of the research work published under the aegis of the Romanian Academy Institute mentioned above. Divided into three parts, the book is based on published studies and documents found in the archive, answering to the major questions concerned the theme and it is a synthesis of the Bukovina phenomenon during the 274 Habsburg occupation and domination, focusing on the status of Romanian identity at the border of a great empire. In order to understand the place and the role of Bukovina, as a province placed at the margin of the Empire, the first chapter of the book (ʺVienna and the Austro‐Hungarian empire. Fame and contradictionsʺ) is an intellectual, cultural and social radiography of the life of Vienna and of the imperial officials. Different nations faced and evoluated first on the social level, performing then in arts, architecture, philosophy and medicine. The second chapter (ʺThe Romanian identity at the border of the empireʺ) brings evidence of the Romanian identity in the Austrian Bukovina, focusing on the fact that during the time when Bukovina was abducted from Moldavia by the Habsburg Empire (1775‐1918 ), the imperial authority, arbitrariness and arrogance have represented the major coordinates of imposing a Catholic authority in the conscience of an Orthodox nation. And all these, in the name of enlightened reforms ʺtranslatedʺ by the Austrians through the act of ʺcivilizingʺ the land in question, which was labeled as ʺwildernessʺ and ʺbarbaricʺ. Chapter is a part of customizing the Romanian identity in terms of Aron Pumnul “phenomenon” related to his student, Mihai Eminescu. The role of the constant patriotism of the erudite professor is outlined by the parallell done with the status of Romanian identity in the Habsburg Bucovina. This part of the book is the milestone of a writerly edifice, that concluding the entire work. Being present in all three chapters through his journalism articles about Bukovina issues, Eminescu is the binder that homogenized the defining ideas of the book, by his theories and visions on both the empire side and on the native Bukovina side. As the journalist, he says that the concerned community ʺis related by unopened chains to the group of people within he was born ʺ Clarifying many of the controversial issues of the history of Bukovina, the present book opens windows to other topics to deal with, not emphasized in the volume. One of them could be the reconstruction of the Habsburg Bukovina parliamentary life. The sources of the foreign archives will provide major surprises on this topic, for sure. 275 Synthesis The tumultuous history of Bukovina came into the attention of researchers especially in the last two decades and the institutes established up to 1989, which are dealing with issues related to Bukovina, each have a perspective more or less individualized. Studies involving history of Bukovina become (still) a thorny issue because – except a few – they tend „to serve a cause – a «Romanian» one, a «Ukrainian» one, a «German» one, a «Russian» one, etc. – a party or a moralityʺ (Purici, 2002, p.501). Therefore, this paper is a part of the horizon and the trajectory of the Romanian research, based on studies and documents of the archive and answers to all problems described herein above. Divided into three parts, the paper is a synthesis of the Bukovina phenomena, about the Habsburg domination and occupation over a century and a half, focusing on the status of the Romanian identity at the border of a great empire. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania).     1 Discursive practice in Bukovina textbooks: aspects of hegemony and subordination Petrea Lindenbauer 1. Introduction The conception of the nineteenth-century Habsburg Empire as multilingual society and state encompassing dominant and subordinate social groups of different languages underpins the present volume (cf. Rosita Schjerve-Rindler, Introduction, this volume). The aim of this paper is to explore the power relations between the Habsburg central power and the subordinate ethnic groups of the empire, and to examine how they manifested themselves in a wide range of public institutions in an interethnic context which was presumably characterised by diglossia. From this perspective, we will focus on one particular area of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Bukovina, which today forms the north-eastern part of the state of Romania. Because of its position at the easternmost periphery of the huge Habsburg state and its high degree of multiethnicity, this region represented a unique historical setting for the interplay of language, social practices and hegemony manifesting themselves in a wide range of religious denominations and languages which were in contact in this area (cf. Chapter 2). The concept of diglossia encompasses a number of factors that reflect the particular sociopolitical structure of a bi- and multilingual society. These include the interethnic relationships within a particular state, the functional distribution of languages in the various domains of public and private life, such as administration, religion, the judiciary, education, family life and neighbourhood, etc. and the valorisations ascribed to the individual languages, which operate in a hierarchical relation of High and Low Varieties. Moreover, the functional distribution of the languages can be viewed as an important indicator of the social status and prestige ascribed to the various speech communities within a state, correlating with these groups' access to power in a society.

Mârza TEACHING SLAVIC HISTORY IN ROMANIA IN 2017 My contribution relies on my experience of more than ten years in teaching a university course of Slavic history in Romania. The course and seminar are entitled «The Slavs and Slavonism in the Medieval and Early Modern History of the Romanians» [«Slavii şi slavonismul în istoria medievală şi premodernă a românilor»]. It is a special course taught to third year students, BA level, at the History of Philosophy Faculty of the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj. For several years now, this teaching experience has led me to several questions regarding the opportunity of offering such a course from a didactic perspective, how it connects to the times we live in, the manner in which such a course should be prepared according to the education, expectations, and needs of our students. I continue to find answers to these questions throughout the years and on this occasion I shall attempt to formulate them. I will begin by presenting briefly the history of Slavic Studies in Romania, as an academic discipline. In Romania, scientific interest into Slavic Studies (Slavistics) dates back to the second half of the 19th century. Such interests appeared as a result of Romanian historiography, culture, and society becoming modern and mature. For almost a century (from the end of the 18th century until the mid-19th century), the historiography of the Enlightenment and of Romanticism have revealed the Latin historical and linguistic factors as fundamental, even exclusive ones in the formation of the Romanian people and language.

    Diversité et Identité Culturelle en Europe ROMANIAN CULTURAL DOMINANCE IN HABSBURG BUKOVINA Dr. Valentin COŞEREANU The National Centre of Study Mihai Eminescu, Ipoteşti, Romania [email protected] Abstract: Arbitrarily incorporated into the Empire, Bukovina was forced to exist in a foreign cultural environment and the people from Bukovina had to fight in order to preserve everything they had acquired and was being systematically damaged at that moment: language, customs, traditions, folklore, laws and common laws. Deliberately mixed up with Germans and Ruthenians – who were given rights the natives did not even dream of enjoying, in order to be more easily integrated – the natives had to bear their identity being erased and thus become „universal citizens of the Empire”. Key words: Bukovina, Austro-Hungarian Empire, culture, resistance. Contrary to all the recorded advances and material achievements of this world, only those pertaining to spirituality remain perennial. All others are temporary. They are common things and belong to society; they are, therefore, rules created by the community itself, made according to the cultural level of society at a given moment. It is culture that unites the community and gives its specific identity. When a nation has the misfortune of being isolated from its native territory and language, when it is arbitrarily integrated into another state organization, different to the one it has participated in building, according to some „objective” laws – then that society regresses. This is the case of Upper Moldavia, essentially changed after Bukovina was artificially incorporated into the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Placed into another social background, subjected to different rules from those of its natural evolution, the new artificially mixed society had to fight, first of all, for its social liberties, resorting, obviously, to their traditional and cultural liberties.

Horodnicul de Jos al Bucovinei a dat românilor intelectuali de seamă, cu o activitate însemnată pentru întreg spațiul românesc. Aici își găsesc obârșia profesorul Elie Luția (1845-1910), preotul și profesorul Orest Popescu (1853-1939), scriitorul Vasile Țigănescu (1899- 1971), prima femeie din România care a pilotat un planor, Felicia Țigănescu (1910-2003), rapsodul Silvestru Lungoci (1939-1993), personalități cărora cărturarul bucovinean Emil Satco le-a dedicat câte un spațiu aparte în lucrarea2 de referință pentru oamenii de seamă ai Bucovinei. În același petec de Bucovină vede lumina zilei în data de 1 noiembrie 1836 și academicianul Ion a lui Gheorghe Sbiera. YAMAMOTO, PhD Candidate Faculty of Social Sciences University of Craiova [email protected] Abstract: This paper facilitates the comparative analysis between two histories of higher education. Those interested in the 160 years-old ideas of university in Romania and Japan will find in this study details on the historical, social and political conditions from which they grew, the first locations, purposes and organizational structures, legal frameworks, commonalities and peculiarities. The nature of higher education is grasped through many contrasts: public and private, free and not, masses and elites etc. By revisiting the beginnings and major developments of higher education in these two very distinct countries, this study promises to identify points that are central to a mature understanding of its origins. It mainly addresses the question: What are the main grassroots differences and similarities between Romanian and Japanese higher education? The answer unfolds in the light of events and characteristics, intertwined with explanation and reasoning. A tangential intention is to counterbalance scholarly efforts invested in comparative higher education research, excessively fashioned on present and recent times, or on biases built on the developed/developing notion of a country. This work is marginally international in scope, as it defends in-depth study and rigorous research against algorithms used by university rankings in attempts to compare institutions of higher education around the world, taking no account of the distant but relevant past, and promoting the idea that such a comparison can be made possible with several clicks.
