Bluebell Railway Education Department Along the Line
BLUEBELL RAILWAY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT ALONG THE LINE FOR SCHOOLS SHEFFIELD PARK STATION 1. Approaching the station buildings along the drive, the picnic area can be seen to the right, adjacent to the River Ouse, where lunch can be taken. The river is little more than a stream today but it was once navigable from the sea at Newhaven to just short of Balcombe Viaduct – on the London to Brighton main line between Haywards Heath and Balcombe. The 11 million bricks used to construct the viaduct were transported up river from Lewes by barge. 2. The station is built in the Queen Anne country architectural style, a style used at all stations on the line and is painted in the colours of the line's initial operators, the London Brighton and South Coast Railway. The year in which the line opened – 1892 -can be found in the decorative plasterwork on the front of the station building. Passengers enter the station via the booking hall and purchase their old fashioned Edmondson cardboard tickets from the booking office. The station was originally lit by oil lamps but is now lit by a mix of evocative gas lighting and more modern electric lights. It sits astride the Greenwich Meridian, the exact (Photo: Bluebell Archives) location being marked by a plaque at the north end of platform 1. 3. The Railway houses and maintains its fleet of mainly steam locomotives at the station - currently it has some thirty engines in stock although only ten or so are in service at any given time – they need a boiler inspection and a new certificate every ten years. -

Ledbury to Gloucester Railway Ledbury to Gloucester by rail Taken from David Postle’s book of the same name and is seen through the eyes of the Driver and Fireman of the last passenger train on the branch on the 11th July 1959. The driver was Jack Folley and the fireman Jim Kavanagh. Jim checked the fire again and looked at the pressure gauge, and decided that he ought to put a little more coal on the fire. He picked up his shovel, opened the fire hole doors and placed half a dozen shovelfuls round the firebox, turned on the injector again because he knew that shortly he would be stopping at Barber’s Bridge with a minute or two in hand to gain any pressure that might be lost by putting more water into the boiler. He picked up a little hand brush and swept the coal dust from the floorboards of the cab. ‘Even when the railway was opened, no attempt was made to advertise the new service. It wasn’t until the end of August that the G.W.R. advertised a summer excursion from Cheltenham to Malvern via Newest. The line was obviously considered important by some because, in the sales particulars of property on the market at that time, the proximity to the new railway was very often stressed’ ‘Did the railway look as though it might fulfil its potential’, asked Jim. ‘Early newspaper reports were very optimistic. The first five weeks saw over 2000 passengers booked at Newest and just over half that at Dymock.’ ‘Talking in the early days,’ said Jim, ‘the guard told me at Ledbury that we have an elderly gentleman on board who travelled on the first train, and here he is, on the last one over the Branch.’ ‘Is that right? I suppose it just goes to show how short-lived this Branch has been.’ ‘Whilst on the subject of people, did I tell you about Dick Nash?’ asked Jack. -
'I Should Want Nothing More': Edward Thomas and Simplicity

DOI https://doi.org/10.5871/jba/007.089 Posted 4 November 2019. © The British Academy 2019 ‘I should want nothing more’: Edward Thomas and simplicity Chatterton Lecture on Poetry read 1 November 2018 GUY CUTHBERTSON Abstract: In the years before the First World War, the ‘Simple Life’ became somewhat fashionable, and Edward Thomas (1878–1917) was one of those Edwardians who were attracted to simplicity, both as a way of life and as a way of writing. As a book reviewer and biographer, he greatly admired simplicity in literature (as seen in, among others, William Cobbett, W. H. Davies, J. M. Synge and Robert Frost). His prose moved towards plainness, and his poetry is beautifully simple. This simplicity has been problematic, however. His poetry is unsuited to the decoding and exegesis (which might be suited to Modernism) that universities seek to conduct. Academics studying his poetry have allowed themselves to believe that they have found complexity, hidden beneath superficial simplicity, whereas in fact Thomas is a poet of genuine bareness, clear-as-glass honesty, magical brevity and childlike simplicity. His simplicity has been popular, and seems to suit some 21st-century fashions. Synge In the decade or so before the First World War, simplicity became somewhat fashionable—indeed it was a religion for some. This craze is captured rather wonderfully in the Edwardian hit musical The Arcadians (1909), where the central character is given the name ‘Simplicitas’, idyllic Arcady is recreated in London at a successful new health food restaurant and men are ‘keen as a knife / On the simple life’.1 Although some might want it otherwise, Edward Thomas was part of this atmos- phere. -

‘The Battle for May Hill’ by Marion Shoard Published in the Newsletter of the Friends of the Dymock Poets, Issue no. 59, Summer 2013 May Hill is probably the most important geographical feature for the Friends of the Dymock Poets. The poets derived their inspiration from the countryside around them. As they walked and talked together along the field paths and lanes, they constantly got their bearings from that unmistakable, reassuring upturned saucer with its fuzz of pines atop – May Hill. As Edward Thomas recalled in his essay about the Dymock country, ‘This England’: ‘Again and again we saw, instead of solid things, dark or bright, never more than half a mile off, the complete broad dome of a high hill six miles distant, a beautiful hill itself, but especially seen thus, always unexpectedly, through gaps in this narrow country, as through a window’. Several FDP walks have taken in May Hill, where members have read aloud ‘Words’, the delightful poem which Edward Thomas composed from its slopes while on a cycling trip with John Haines, the Gloucester solicitor and amateur botanist who joined the poets on many of their walks-talks. In view of this connection, when FDP member Alexander Maltby, who lives on May Hill, contacted the FDP about a plan to build a five-bedroom mansion on an isolated site on its slopes, the committee was concerned. Alas, we do not have the capacity to check every planning application, so we can deal only with selected cases. Barbara Davis and I were the first committee members to go and visit the site, and this is the submission which Jeff Cooper, our chair, sent in on behalf of the FDP to Forest of Dean District Council, which will grant or withhold planning consent. -

TREC Section 4: Acton Town Station/Gunnersbury Park to Boston Manor Station (Optional Extension to Ealing Broadway)
TREC Section 4: Acton Town Station/Gunnersbury Park to Boston Manor Station (optional extension to Ealing Broadway). Distance: 8.4 km (5.4 miles). Public Transport: Section 4 starts at Acton Town Underground Station (District and Piccadilly lines), finishing at Boston Manor Underground Station (Piccadilly Line). There is an optional exit en route at Brentford Station or an optional 3.7 km (2.3 miles) extension from Boston Manor to Ealing Broadway Station (using part of the TREC Section 1 route). Surface and Terrain: The first half of the route is along level paths, including through parks: Gunnersbury and Carville Hall Park South; however the section along the Thames Path and the River Brent/Grand Union Canal Walk does involve some steps (an alternative route avoiding the steps is suggested); the route eventually reaches Boston Manor Park and Station. Refreshments: Acton Town Station; Gunnersbury Park Café; Brentford High Street (near Brentford Lock); Boston Manor Park Café (seasonal), Boston Manor Station and shops nearby. Covid-19 restrictions: Check availability of refreshments and toilets before your walk. Public Toilets: Acton Town Station (charge); Gunnersbury Park; Boston Manor Park Café (seasonal). The route starts from south-west Acton, one of the seven towns of the London Borough of Ealing, Acton means "oak farm" or "farm by oak trees". This final section of TREC does stray into the north east of the London Borough of Hounslow going through parts of old Brentford, however as this was historically part of the Parish of Ealing when it did extend to the River Thames we think it’s appropriate to include in TREC. -
Northeast England – a History of Flash Flooding
Northeast England – A history of flash flooding Introduction The main outcome of this review is a description of the extent of flooding during the major flash floods that have occurred over the period from the mid seventeenth century mainly from intense rainfall (many major storms with high totals but prolonged rainfall or thaw of melting snow have been omitted). This is presented as a flood chronicle with a summary description of each event. Sources of Information Descriptive information is contained in newspaper reports, diaries and further back in time, from Quarter Sessions bridge accounts and ecclesiastical records. The initial source for this study has been from Land of Singing Waters –Rivers and Great floods of Northumbria by the author of this chronology. This is supplemented by material from a card index set up during the research for Land of Singing Waters but which was not used in the book. The information in this book has in turn been taken from a variety of sources including newspaper accounts. A further search through newspaper records has been carried out using the British Newspaper Archive. This is a searchable archive with respect to key words where all occurrences of these words can be viewed. The search can be restricted by newspaper, by county, by region or for the whole of the UK. The search can also be restricted by decade, year and month. The full newspaper archive for northeast England has been searched year by year for occurrences of the words ‘flood’ and ‘thunder’. It was considered that occurrences of these words would identify any floods which might result from heavy rainfall.
