Your local Neighbourhood Policing Team
PCSO Tania Shuttleworth is the local PCSO who is also a member of the Aston Project
What is the Aston Project?
The Aston Project is working with disadvantaged and vulnerable children who could be subjected to crime by getting them to work for their community to earn credits that they can later spend on activities. Activities that they could take part in include, go karting, mountain biking, mini motors etc
Priorities
We have set ourselves these priorities so that we can hopefully reduce certain crime over a long period. We have also been set priorities from the Police and Crime Commissioner and our local inspector for the Forest of Dean Communities.
Setting ourselves these priorities will ensure that we are accountable for our response to these priorities and we will be evidencing this to the council on a 6 monthly basis. This will also be evidenced via the Neighbourhood Policing Team Newsletter.
3
Newent Neighbourhood Policing Team Priorities:
1. Neighbourhood Watch and Crimestoppers a. We would like to increase the number of Neighbourhood Watches with the Newent and District Communities and to promote crime stoppers. The reason for this is so that the residents of Newent are willing to co-operate, support and trust their local policing Team in policing their communities. Neighbourhood Watch advertises that the residents within a certain area are actively working with the police to reduce crime and Anti-Social Behaviour. b. We are also looking to promote Crimestoppers which is charity where residents can pass on information and remain anonymous. This will hopefully give residents the confidence to pass on information even though they may not have the confidence to pass it onto the police personally.
2. Education. a. As a neighbourhood Policing Team we have identified how important and effective education is at preventing crime. Although Education is a broad subject (such as educating people on how to prevent Burglary/speeding etc) we are going to concentrate more on educating the youth. This will help build up a positive relationship and we will be looking to educate them on certain dangers to hopefully prevent them from being victims on crime. The other positive is that if they know their local Policing Team and have a positive relationship with them hopefully they will have the confidence to report any issues that could be affecting them.
3. Rural Crime a. Over the last few months it has been evidential that a number of residents are concerned around Rural Crime. The Newent District is approximately 20 miles squared and contain a large quantity of farms within this community. The usually crime is theft of farm yard machinery. Due to the scale of the location and the difficulty of being in ‘the right place at the right time’ we are looking to educate farmers on the Prevention of crime. This will include property marking vehicles/tools, fitting tracers, signing up to rural watch, alarms and locking away equipment and advertise that they are going so. We will be working with Farming insurers and will be travelling to ‘farming events’ to hopefully get the farmers to come to us and get this message across to the farming community so that hopefully we can prevent this type of crime.
4
4. Vulnerability a. As a Neighbourhood Team we have realised how you are more likely you are to be a victim of crime if you have vulnerability. There are a number of factors that could make you vulnerable which could include; age, Disability, Ethnicity, finances, Gender etc and as a Neighbourhood Team we want to educate the public and offer support vulnerable individuals to hopefully give them the confidence to come forward for help when needed.
These are local priorities that we are tasking ourselves and like I mentioned above we have also be tasked with priorities from our local inspector and our Police and Crime Commissioner.
Our Local Inspector has tasked us with:
Accessibility and Accountability
Community led policing priority for Newent is based on the Police and Crime Commissioner's priority of "Accessibility and Accountability". Community members of the Newent policing area identify that they want to see and feel a greater policing presence. We ask the town council hold us to account for this priority.
To achieve this priority we will be:
Increasing Neighbourhood Watch and for people to easily communicate non- emergency issues with the police Providing a regular Newsletter of all the positive work we have been doing to help reduce crime and Anti-Social Behaviour. To be accessible to the public via the mobile police vehicle
As a Neighbourhood Team covering approximately 18 Town/Parish Councils we cannot be seen by everyone at the same time but we will show you what we are doing to help prevent crime and anti-social behaviour with the Newent and District Community.
5
Our Police and Crime Commissioner have tasked us with:
Safer and Social Driving.
This is part of the Crime plan which was designed by the Police and Crime Commissioner. The forest of Dean is an area that has a high number of Road Traffic Accidents and of course as a Neighbourhood Team we will be looking to bring this number down.
To achieve this priority we will be
Setting up Community Speedwatch Groups Working with local schools to educate the students around the dangers of the road. Working with the Special Constabulary and carry out Road Safety Operations.
We are hoping that by targeting these Priorities we can help prevent crime within the area and by working with the public we can make Newent a Safer Stronger Community.
Prevention Work
Hopefully all the prevention work we have carried out since April 2018 is starting to reduce certain types of crime.
Neighbourhood Watch Facebook Group:
We have set up a Neighbourhood Watch Facebook group for the Newent and District Community to help get messages to as many people as possible.

Mental Health Awareness day for Farmers
PCSO Peter Timmins arranged an awareness day at Hartpury College for the agricultural students, highlighting mental health in the farming community. The morning sessions included a talk from the Farming Community Network and a tackling stigma workshop given by the NHS 2gether trust. The talks centred on how people in farming community are affected and signposted the students where to get the appropriate help. They can in turn take the knowledge and be “ambassadors” for mental health once they get back to their farms.
