After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world. -

The intention of the list is to provide those with an interest in Thomas with the tools to understand his enormous contribution to criticism as well as poetry. This is very much a work in progress. It is proposed here that he is, in fact, concerned with exploration of the conscious and unconscious selves. His exploration is more philosophical than psychological in that he makes no use of Freudian formulas. He follows rather the intuitive approach of Jung but uses the media of fiction and, thereby, imagery, to show the possibilities of man's infinite mind. He uses images of doors, windows, water and mirrors to show how the conscious and unconscious selves, the real and astral selves, are divided by lack of understanding, by refusal to accept the other, and by total denial of one another. -

Classic Poetry Series Edward Thomas - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Edward Thomas(3 March 1878 - 9 April 1917) Phillip Edward Thomas was an Anglo-Welsh writer of prose and poetry. He is commonly considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. Already an accomplished writer, Thomas turned to poetry only in 1914. He enlisted in the army in 1915, and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France. <b>Early Life</b> Thomas was born in Lambeth, London. He was educated at Battersea Grammar School, St Paul's School and Lincoln College, Oxford. His family were mostly Welsh. Unusually, he married while still an undergraduate and determined to live his life by the pen. He then worked as a book reviewer, reviewing up to 15 books every week. He was already a seasoned writer by the outbreak of war, having published widely as a literary critic and biographer, as well as a writer on the countryside. He also wrote a novel, The Happy-Go-Lucky Morgans (1913). Thomas worked as literary critic for the Daily Chronicle in London and became a close friend of Welsh tramp poet W. H. Davies, whose career he almost single- handedly developed. From 1905, Thomas lived with his wife Helen and their family at Elses Farm near Sevenoaks, Kent. He rented a tiny cottage nearby for Davies and nurtured his writing as best he could. On one occasion, Thomas even had to arrange for the manufacture, by a local wheelwright, of a makeshift wooden leg for Davies. -

In Search of God: The Lost Horizon in Rupert Brooke’s Poetry Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa Al-Laithy (Ph.D.) Assistant Professor of English Al-Imam Muhammad Bin Sad Islamic University Riyadh Saudi Arabia I The British poet Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) is one of the poets who should be reread and reassessed. Brooke‟s reputation as a poet has been very much apt to doubt and controversies by admirers and detractors alike. Unlike many other poets, Brooke prospered greatly as a poet when he was only twenty. At his time, he was a “poetic…model” (Willdhardt, 49). Unlike the majority of poets, again, shortly after his death at the age of twenty eight, his reputation declined drastically and his poetry was vehemently criticised, attacked and undervalued. This makes of Brooke a unique phenomenon worthy of rereading and reassessment. Indeed, what happened with Brooke as a poet is exactly the opposite of what usually happens with poets during their lifetimes and after their deaths. One can just think of such poets as John Keats (1795-1821)and Alfred Tennyson (1809-92) and Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) who were severely attacked during their lifetimes, but were explored and championed after their deaths. Ever since the 1920s and the 1930s of the past century, Brooke‟s name as a poet has been diminishing, and almost vanishing, indeed. There seems to have been a general consent among writers and critics of one generation after another either to mention the poet askance, undervalue his poetic contribution, or else to ignore him totally. To give one example, The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry, one of the most prestigious, referential anthologies in English, mentions nothing at all about Brooke or his poetry. -

Graham, Dylan Thomas and Vernon Watkins The circulation of goods follows that of men women and children, of festival ritual, ceremonies and dances, jokes and injuries. Basically they are the same. If things are given and returned it is precisely because one gives and returns ‘respects’ and ‘courtesies’. But in addition, in giving them, a man gives himself, and he does so because he owes himself – himself and his possessions – to others. Marcel Mauss.1 I ‘Portrait of a Friend’ is one of Vernon Watkins better-known poems. This is partly because the friend in question is Dylan Thomas. Not that it is Watkins’s only poem on or for Thomas: Watkins’s widow, Gwen, has found enough to produce a whole volume of Poems for Dylan.2 Nevertheless, the others, most of which date from after Thomas’s death, are nowhere near as good nor as interesting as this poem written when Thomas was very much alive and when Watkins, though the elder poet, had yet to publish his first book. -
Herbert Howells' a Garland for De La Mare Twelve Songs for Voice
BLOZAN, BENJAMIN C., D.M.A. Herbert Howells’ A Garland for de la Mare Twelve Songs for Voice and Piano: Contexts for Performance (2013) Directed by Dr. James Douglass. 166 pp. Because British composer Herbert Howells (1892-1983) decided in mid-career to concentrate his creative energies upon Anglican liturgical music, his many notable contributions to secular genres are often overlooked. This is certainly the case for A Garland for de la Mare, a collection of twelve songs for voice and piano on poems by Howells’ longtime friend Walter de la Mare (1873-1956), a work nearly unknown in the United States. Its posthumous publication in 1995 also contributed to its failure to enter the art song canon. The neglect suffered by this commemorative work—held in high esteem by all writers who have assessed it—is unfortunate and unwarranted. Howells and de la Mare are both ubiquitously regarded as master craftsmen in their respective disciplines. Additionally, they share a remarkable compatibility between musical and poetic languages which is vividly highlighted in the songs in Garland. The set gains additional significance by containing the only songs Howells worked on past 1934. Though early versions of several of the songs first appeared in 1919, the bulk of Howells’ effort occurred much later in the mid-50s (surrounding de la Mare’s death) and in the years leading up to the centenary of the poet’s birth in 1973. As such, they display a confidence and economy indicative of a composer fully in possession of his creative voice. This study aims to combat Garland’s obscurity by inspiring interest in informed performances of the songs therein.
