There are two public transportation maps and six full-age city maps starting from Page 276 2. The Table of Contents starts on Page 3. This lists every story in the eBook and you can click on the titles to go directly to any given story. 3. The Backstory section starts on Page 14. You probably know a little about Munich and Bavaria already. Do lederhosen, giant beer mugs and BWM ring any bells? This section is where you can learn a whole lot more about the history, traditions and people that have made the region both famous and infamous. 4. The Attractions section starts on Page 61. Munich boasts a plethora of museums, monuments, palaces and other highly see-able sights. The best ones, over 60 of them, are reviewed here. The Baroque in West Germany: creating regional identity in the post-National Federal State. Exhibitions as mass media ‘for a wide audience’ Meinrad v. Engelberg Do individual countries and states develop an ‘image of the Baroque’ that is specific, typical of its era, clearly defined and visibly distinct from that of other nations? Is it thus possible to make a statement about the rather numerous and diverse Baroque exhibitions in West Germany – the ‘old’ Federal Republic of Germany prior to 1990 – that meaningfully integrates the individual case into an overall context? The following essay advocates the thesis that a common ‘meta-narrative’ is hidden behind this diversity, integrating the art of the Baroque affirmatively into the simultaneously forming self-image of the young ‘Bonn Republic’, namely, that of a post-nationalist, European-networked, historically rooted, profoundly federalist ‘Kulturnation’. Surely more than any other form of presentation, the (thematic) exhibition may be considered the most typical medium for conveying art to the public, at least since the second half of the twentieth century.1 The ceremonial queue through elaborately promoted events, which for some time have been given the booming epithet ‘blockbuster’, manifest their success today and provide evidence of their unbroken acceptance in the ‘event’ society .2 Unfortunately, by nature the exhibition, unlike the film or the book, is an ephemeral, fleeting medium: the temporary spatial disposition of this form of presentation usually disappears without a trace after the closing party and is in essence more poorly documented, and less thoroughly discussed in the press, than, for example, the stage sets of theatre productions.3 For that reason, I am taking 1 This does not refer to classic exhibition formats such as the Salons de Paris or to monographic shows of artists, but rather to project in which a certain (historical) theme is presented and discussed with a variety of disparate objects. -

October 20th, 2021 (Wednesday): Arrive at Munich Airport in the morning. Here, we collect our bags, pass through passport control, meet our escort and board the coach. We start our Pilgrimage with the Celebration of Daily Mass at St. Johann Nepomuk, better known as the Asam Church. A Baroque church in Munich, southern Germany, built from 1733 to 1746 by the brothers, sculptor Egid Quirin Asam, and painter Cosmas Damian Asam as their private church. After we venture out by enjoying a guided tour of Munich. First, we begin with a visit to the Marienplatz with the world famous “Glockenspiel”, and the twin-towered Frauenkirche, the most familiar landmark of old Munich. You will see the Town Hall, and the magnificent boulevard Feldherrenhalle Ludwigsstrasse Siegestor, created by King Ludwig I in the middle of the 19th century. See the Residenz, the palace of the Kings of Bavaria, and the Hofgarten. After our tour, we have lunch on our own and free time. We then make our was to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Cosmas Damian Asam (1686−1739)
Cosmas Damian Asam (1686−1739) «Pictor et Architectus»1 Herkunft und Ausbildung Cosmas Damian ist Sohn des Malers Georg Asam (1649–1711) und seiner Ehefrau Maria Theresia Prugger (1657–1719). Er wird in Laingruben beim Kloster Benediktbeuern geboren und am 27. September 1686 in der Pfarrkirche2 getauft. Sein Vater ist seit 1683 für die Abtei Benediktbeuern tätig und wohnt mit seiner noch kleinen Familie im Klosterort Laingruben. Cosmas Damian ist das vierte von zwölf Kindern. Nur fünf erreichen das Erwachsenenalter. Sein um drei Jahre älterer Bruder Philipp Emanuel ist begnadeter Musiker, dies auch als Pater Engelbert im Zisterzienserkloster Fürstenfeld, in das er 1707 eintritt. Die um ein Jahr ältere Schwester Maria Salome ergreift den Beruf der Mutter und ist später bekannte Fassmalerin. Erst im nächsten Wirkungsort des Vaters, in Tegernsee, wird der sechs Jahre jüngere Egid Quirin geboren, mit dem Cosmas Damian später lebenslang zusammenarbeiten wird. Die neun Jahre jüngere Schwester Maria Anna Theresia wählt ebenfalls das Klosterleben und tritt in ein Münchner Franziskanerinnenkloster ein. Die Kinder des Georg Asam und der Maria Theresia Prugger wachsen in einem künstlerischen Umfeld auf, das Fundament ihrer späteren grossen Leistungen ist. Nicht nur der Vater ist hervorragender Freskant, auch die Mutter stammt aus einer Malerfamilie. Ihr Vater Nikolaus Prugger ist kurfürstlicher Hofmaler und sie selbst ist eine gute Fassmalerin, die an vielen Werken der Familie mitbeteiligt ist. Der junge Cosmas Damian verbringt die Jugendjahre am jeweiligen Wohnort der Familie, das sich nach den grossen Aufträgen richtet. 1689 zieht die Familie nach Tegernsee, 1695 nach München und 1696–1701 ist sie in Bruck tätig. -
