• Talempong Kreasi and Talempong Goyang in West Sumatra
HUMANIORA VOLUME 29 Number 3 October 2017 Page 245–255 Postcolonial Aesthetics: Talempong Kreasi and Talempong Goyang in West Sumatra Andar Indra Sastra, Nadya Fulzi, Syahri Anton E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to disclose the postcolonial aesthetics of talempong kreasi and talempong goyang in West Sumatra. Aesthetics can be defined as a sense of perception or the various kinds of feelings that are aroused by an art object that is being observed. Postcolonialism is understood to be the continuation of colonialism; hence postcolonial aesthetics discusses the sense of perception, in this case with reference to talempong kreasi and talempong goyang as the material object. Talempong is a type of bronze musical instrument found in West Sumatra; the word kreasi means ‘creation’ or something new, while the word goyang means ‘rocking’ or ‘swaying’ and refers to the body movements of the spectators as they appear to dance in time to the talempong music. The addition of the words kreasi and goyang after the word talempong create the impression that this type of music belongs to the domain of popular music. The emergence of these two concepts in West Sumatra cannot be separated from the influence and power of a number of leading figures in the field of education – specifically artists – from the colonial era, who had a background in Western music education. Talempong kreasi and talempong goyang are dynamic in nature and have the ability to play both major and minor melodies as the talempong instruments are tuned to chromatic pitches. The tuning system of the talempong is akin to that of diatonic musical instruments, and as a musical system it presents the harmonies of Western music through its melodies and chords.

Humaniora, Vol. 24, No. 2 Juni 2012: 156 - 167 HUMANIORA VOLUME 24 No. 2 Juni 2012 Halaman 156 - 167 KONSEP MULTIKULTURAL DAN ETNISITAS PRIBUMI DALAM PENELITIAN SENI Victor Ganap* ABSTRACT Traditional arts are essentially public cultural expressions, not individual expressions. They are bound by the characteristics of their respective cultures which bring with them their local wisdom. While multiculturalism acknowledges the equality of all oral traditions that have been embedded in every indigenous ethnicity, any research conducted on traditional arts should appropriately be carried out by researchers who belong to the corresponding cultural groups and have a life time experience within their own primordiality. Therefore, new concepts introduced in research into traditional arts based on multiculturalism and indigenous ethnicity play an important role in maintaining truthful corroboration of the research outcome.

  • Musical Ambivalence in the Performance of Saluang Orgen in West Sumatra
Arts and Design Studies www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-6061 (Paper) ISSN 2225-059X (Online) Vol.63, 2018 MUSICAL AMBIVALENCE IN THE PERFORMANCE OF SALUANG ORGEN IN WEST SUMATRA Asril 1, M. Arif Anas 2, Jonni 3, Nurkholis 4 1, 2, 3, Karawitan Department, Faculty of Performing Arts 4Music Department, Faculty of Performing Arts Indonesia Institute of the Arts Padangpanjang, West Sumatra, Indonesia Email: [email protected] Abstract This article aims to discuss the musical ambivalence in the performance of saluangorgen in West Sumatra. Saluangorgen is a musical genre that is formed from the ‘cross-breeding’ of saluangdendang and keyboard (electone). Saluangdendang is a genre of traditional Minangkabau music which is made up of saluang (a wind instrument) and dendang (traditional vocal music), performed using a Minangkabau pentatonic scale. In the Minangkabau community of West Sumatra, especially amongst musicians, the keyboard is commonly referred to as the orgen (organ) and its music as “ orgentunggal ” (solo organ). The orgen is commonly used to accompany a variety of songs in the domain of popular music. The hybridization of these two musical genres has produced a music characterized by ambivalence. A qualitative method is used for this research because the descriptive- analytical principle is an important method in the discussion. The research results show that the tension that existsbetween the two musical genres creates a unique characteristic and dynamic in each performance, even though there is still a clash in the unification of the two genres. This not only influences the musical aspects but also affects the structure and form of the performance and even the audience.

chapter 8 Wind, String and Other Instruments This chapter will discuss instruments that are played on their own, or in com- bination with one or two other instruments, mostly for entertainment. In the overview in Section 1.2 it was already mentioned that the Outer Baduy have four types of flutes, all made of bamboo: elét, suling lam(b)us, suling kumbang and tarawélét (also called taléot). They also have four string instruments: the kacapi (pantun) zither, (kacapi) siter flat zither, the two- string bowed lute rendo and the four- string bowed lute viol (violin). After discussing these wind and string instruments, the last section will briefly mention a few other instruments that may also be played on their own: gambang and calung xylophones, and karind- ing Jew’s harps. Of the here mentioned instruments the Inner Baduy are only allowed to play the side-blown flutes suling kumbang and tarawélét, the kacapi pantun zither and the karinding Jew’s harp. Baduy say that the lamus, kumbang and tarawélét flutes are also used for courting purposes. In a way this is not surprising, as in many regions of the world flutes are thought to have magical powers. In the 1930s Kruyt reported this for Indonesian flutes, mainly in Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. He de- scribed the Indonesian flute as a ‘vessel full of life force with which one may create life’, and the creative powers of the wind, ‘the breath of the universe’, are explicitly mentioned. Kruyt’s conclusion is that in the past the ritual use of flutes in Indonesia may have been more common than in the 1930s (Kruyt 1938: 249, 268, 269).

  • Philip Yampolsky
C an the Traditional A rts Survive, and Should They?1 Philip Yampolsky 1. Definition What are we talking about when we use this term "traditional" in Indonesia? Let me offer just a quick and simple definition here, so you know at least what I have in mind. I will phrase it (and most of this talk) in terms of music, because that is the art I know best, but I believe the essence of what I say could be applied to other traditional arts as well. I imagine a continuum, at one end (the "wholly traditional" end) of which is music that shows no obvious foreign (extra-Indonesian) influence in its musical idiom; at the other end is music that is wholly foreign in idiom. For my purposes today, any music that registers at or near the traditional end may be considered traditional. At the other end of the scale would be music in the European harmonized idioms (pop Indonesia, patriotic songs, church songs) or music in the mixed Middle Eastern/Indian/Westem idioms of dangdut, orkes gambus, and qasidah moderen.1 2 In between would be the musics in "hybrid" idioms—kroncong, for example, or tanjidor. A more complicated, but perhaps more useful, picture could present two continua. One would be the one just described; the second would have the same poles, but the domain would be not the music's idiom but its aesthetic. (Musics would be positioned on this continuum according to the extent, for example, to which they have been packaged in accordance with European/American norms of duration, virtuoso performance, attractive young performers, sharp beginnings and endings, predominance of singers over instrumentalists, etc.) But I will not bring this aesthetic domain into the discussion here.
