The characters that were analyzed in two episodes were the young black women of Insecure and in two episodes the young white women in Girls. The method for this study was conducted using content analysis to identify the following variables focusing on identity, racial stereotypes and names used to address one another. Additionally, variables to identify gender included emotional approaches to situations, stereotypes and gender role expectations. • Reportedly at the Hands of White Nationalists
TRUMP AND HIS SURROGATES LOUDLY PEDDLED DEBUNKED RIGHT-WING CONSPIRACY THEORIES TIED TO QANON AND WHITE SUPREMACISTS, GIVING THEM FALSE LEGITIMACY SUMMARY As Trump and his allies searched for justifications to claim electoral victory, the far-right online community played a pivotal role in originating claims for the campaign to push. Conspiracies from white supremacists, QAnon supporters, and long-time conspiracy theorists were elevated, disseminated, and pushed out by the president and his allies. There seems to be a direct flow from the furthest right reaches of the internet and the official spokespeople of the president —including the president himself — such as: • The president promoting numerical figures developed by “TheDonald.Win” — an online community founded to openly post hate speech and calls to violence — in an attempt to prove his false voter fraud claims. • Promoting “Stop The Steal” events planned by white supremacists, including one that led to a stabbing reportedly at the hands of white nationalists. • Lending credibility to the mysterious, propagandic twitter account “Election Wizard,” which promotes election conspiracy theories and follows noted white supremacists and QAnon accounts. • Using a QAnon promoted conspiracy to fire a top elections cybersecurity official. • What Color Is Your Hoodie? Essays on Black Gay Identity by Jarrett Neal
______________________________________________________________________________ What Color is Your Hoodie? Essays on Black Gay Identity By Jarrett Neal New York: Chelsea Station Editions (2015). 176 pp., $18.00. ______________________________________________________________________________ Reviewed by Leslee Grey, Queens College, CUNY Abstract This review of What Color Is Your Hoodie? highlights the ways in which the essayist writes to make sense of the intersectionalities of his own identities and subjectivities. Neal’s bio- graphical vignettes serve as points of entry to discuss various social and cultural phenom- ena. The author weaves his personal stories into broad political analyses and social com- mentaries on a number of issues that are of interest to scholars of culture—in particular, race, class, masculinity, sexualities, bodies, and power. Keywords: memoir, race, sexuality Introduction Essayist Jarrett Neal (2015) underscores the role that writing plays in understanding the complex- ities, precarities, and contradictions of identities and subjectivities in an uncertain world, what Bauman might refer to as “liquid life” (2005). “Writers write to make sense of the world,” Neal explains. They “seek to map the complex psychic terrain of human experience, to make sense of a world that often makes no sense” (p. 77). Constructing stories can help individuals form connec- tions between seemingly incongruent phenomena, creating meanings that make sense to the writer in light of the writer’s prior understandings. Social and/or “identity” media platforms such as Twit- ter, Facebook, and Tumblr allow just about anyone with a mobile phone to inhabit the space of a writer, externalizing their inner psyches and joining a spectacle of endless discourse for millions to instantly consume (Debord, 2014).

  • 1 Understanding Black Racial Identity
1 Understanding Black Racial Identity As the tragic events surrounding the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, unfolded in the fall of 2014, much of the mainstream print and television media’s portrayal of events focused on issues of black and white. In much of this rhetoric was a presentation of the “black” view as a single, unified voice surrounding the tragic, complicated, and often confusing events of the death of Michael Brown and the subsequent protests and riots, followed by the non- indictment by the grand jury, which fostered more protests and riots. When former National Basketball Association (NBA) star and current NBA analyst Charles Barkley spoke out against the protests and riots, it stirred a controversy. In a series of back- and- forth open letters between Barkley and current cohost and former NBA player, Kenny Smith, Barkley said, “Listen man, I know that I’m Black and I’m always going to be. I know anytime I disagree with Black people I’m going to be a sell- out or an Uncle Tom.”1 During the 2012 presidential election, actor Stacey Dash, most notably from the movie Clueless, endorsed Mitt Romney for president. This endorsement by a black celebrity for a white candidate over a very popular black incumbent president set off a firestorm. Comments on social media ranged from calling Dash an “airhead, a “nobody,” and an “indoor slave,” to suggesting she was “no longer Black.” Even Samuel L. Jackson posted on Twitter: “Is Stacey Dash crazy?” There was so much animosity, Dash responded by saying, “The fury, I really don’t under- stand the fury.
