The Hampton University School of Liberal Arts & Education is pleased to present the 2nd Annual Hampton University Film Festival (HUFF) on Hampton University’s beautiful and historic campus. We look forward to screening films and facilitating panel discussions that highlight the complexities and nuances of the African-American identity. Topics will include 21st-Century dating, black superheroes, fatherhood, faith-based films, health disparities, marriage and family and much more. "From Hampton to Hollywood," the theme for this year’s film festival, is especially apropos since our opening night film, ’s "," features the work of two highly esteemed Hampton University alumni. ("Do the Right Thing", "Malcolm X", "") served as casting director on the film and Ruth Carter ("Do the Right Thing", "Selma", "Malcolm X") was the film’s costume designer. Following the screening, , a legendary film producer ("Do The Right Thing", "She's Gotta Have It", "Malcolm X") will be reunited with Carter and Reed to discuss their individual contributions to groundbreaking and timeless cinema. The discussion will be moderated by celebrated film critic, Mike Sargent("PBS Newshour" WBAI).

The School of Liberal Arts & Education is pleased to offer the rare opportunity for students to interact with alumni who took degrees in liberal arts from Hampton and went to Hollywood and became trailblazers in their respective fields. Their triumphant return to Hampton University affirms that our current students have the same capacity to make an indelible mark on the entertainment industry in years to come.

Denzel Washington, , Rosie Perez and have something in with Emmy Award-winning Casting Director ROBI REED. Blessed with an eye for talent and a gift o placing it Reed’s career has spanned over 30 years. Reed has had a hand in the careers of many and is known for, among other things, her ability to lead budding stars into their own brilliance. Her ability to match a role with the right talent has led to the success of household names like , who she discovered at a local comedy club in Los Angeles and , who she found at an open casting call.

Reed has more than 70 flms to her credit, including blockbusters The Best Man, Love Jones, Soul Food, , Love Jones, Set It Off and , in which she cast in his frst leading role.

Her frst studio flm came with Spike Lee’s . She went on to cast Lee’s Do The Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, Crooklyn, Clockers, Malcolm X and , breaking out three of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Samuel L. Jackson, Halle Berry and Queen Latifah.

The demand for Reed’s eye for talent grew beond the silver screen to include a multitude of television projects, including BET’s critically acclaimed New Edition Story Mini Series as well as other popular shows like ’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, Showtime’s series Barbershop, The Tracey Morgan Show, Girlfriends, The PJ’s, , and Roc for which she was nominated for a Casting Society of America (CSA) Award for best casting.

She also cast Beyoncé Knowles in her first acting role in MTV’s Carmen A Hip Hopera and then in the movie, The Fight Temptations.

In 1997 she earned an Emmy Award for her outstanding work in casting The Tuskegee Airmen for HBO Pictures. In 1998 Reed received a second Emmy nomination for her work on HBO’s Only in America: The Don King Story and in 1999 a third Emmy nomination came for HBO’s A Lesson Before Dying. [10 ] Robi Reed

In 1993 she received the Turner Trumpet Award for the Award-winning Film Heatwave. Her efforts for Spike Lee’s Malcolm X earned her a CSA Award in 1992. She was recently invited to join the exclusive ranks of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as a voting member. Another affrmation of her legacy and the impact that she has made in the entertainment industry.

After 25 years of running her own company, Robi Reed Entertainment, seven years ago Reed joined the executive ranks at Black Entertainment Television Network (BET). In her position as the Vice President of Talent and Casting for Original Programming, she oversees all scripted and non-scripted shows for the network, including the hugely successful series . Satisfying her philanthropic nature, Reed launched The Reed For Hope Foundation (RFHF). The mission for RFHF is to inspire health and wellness with creative and innovative prevention methods. She is also a Board Member of the American Heart Association and was awarded for her work in philanthropy.

Reed holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Speech Communication and Theatre from Hampton University. She is the proud mother of two - a third year college student/singer songwriter Summer and Noah, a Senior Art and Illustration Major Finishing College in Los Angeles.

[11] Ruth Carter EMMY-AWARD WINNING & TWO TIME ACADEMY-AWARD NOMINATED COSTUME DESIGNER

RUTH E. CARTER’S unparalleled ability to develop an authentic story through costume and character has made her one of the most sought after and renowned costume designers today. Known for her research and diligence to the craft, specifically for her outstanding work for period ensemble films like ee anel highly praised , Ava DuVernays’ SELMA, and her most recent period work, ROOTS.

ae has garnered two Academy Award (Oscar) nominations for “Best Costume Design,” for Spike Lee’s MALCOLM X (1993) and Steven Spielberg’s AMISTAD (1998). Ruth Carter holds a BA from Hampton University, majoring in Theatre Arts. She has worked in the entertainment industry for over three decades and has been credited as Costume Designer on many period flms to date.

Carter ha collaborated with director Spike Lee, , Reggie Hudlin, Stephen Spielberg and now Ryan Cooglar. Together with Spike Lee, they have worked on over a dozen film projects beginning with SCHOOL DAZE and including DO THE RIGHT THING, MALCOLM X, OLD BOY, DA SWEET BLOOD OF and CHIRAQ. Ruth is a collaborator with other filmmakers on many notable films including WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT, BLACK DYNAMITE and SPARKLE. Carter anchored the look for Gabrielle Union in BEING MARY JANE, and forged comedic style in KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES.

Upcoming projects are KIDNAP starring Halle Berry, MARSHALL, a story about a landmark NAACP case fought by Thurgood Marshall starring and MOTHERLAND the latest MARVEL SUPERHERO FILM about The Black Panther, also starring Chadwick Bozeman, Lupita Nyongo, Michael B. Jordan and Forest Whitiker.

[12 ] Monty Ross PRODUCER & DIRECTOR

MONTY ROSS, filmmaker, producer and director started his career as an actor. Spike Lee, one of Ross’ college buddies talked often about their professional interest in producing major film and television projects. Ross stayed in pursuing a career as an actor, but it wasn’t long after that Ross starred in Spike Lee’s New York University thesis film, Joe’s Bedstuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads. Afterwards, Ross moved to to pursue career opportunities with Spike. The two were certain that after Lee’s thesis film won a student Academy Award they would be on their way. However, a year later, Ross and Lee without the support of a Hollywood studio made their first film independently. In 1985, Ross served as the Production Supervisor on the legendary 12 day shooting schedule of She’s Gotta It. The film grossed nearly $7,000,000 and Ross credits the film with launching his career.

Over the next 17 years, Ross called 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, Spike Lee’s production company his home away from home. Spike became an international artist and filmmaker and Ross handled day-to-day operations as Lee’s Vice President of Production for the company. Ross is credited with co-producing Lee’s early work: School Daze, Do The Right Thing, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Crooklyn and Clockers. Additionally, he produced the advertising campaigns for Nike’s: Air Jordan (America’s #1 selling sneaker) and Levi’s 501 Jeans. Ross, along with Adam C. Powell, III, Adam C. Powell, IV and Geoffrey Garfield, produced the bio film abo legendary , NY Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The film, Keep The Faith, Baby, starred and Harry Lenox. It was made for Showtime/Paramount Television and released in 2002. o also has directed and produced two nationally televised syndicated documentaries for SI Communications entitled: Welfare to Work, hosted by Nia Long and After Affirmative Action, hosted by Malcolm Jamal Warner oth programs aired in over 100 network and cable markets.

Today, Ross is actively involved in digital production and developing projects that serve the needs of under-served students who have expressed a desire to learn and grow in the fields of media technology and film-making. To date he has actively been involved with training hundreds of students to utilize basic film production to develop, script, produce and distribute professional projects.

[13] Mike Sargent FILMMAKER/FILM CRITIC/RADIO & TV HOST SPEAKER/PIONEERING AFRO-FUTURIST

MIKE SARGENT is currently chief Film Critic for WBAI RADIO’s weekly daytime flm review program, REELWORLD, and host of WBAI’s popular late night radio show, NITESHIFT. Mike was also the host & creator of ARISE ON SCREEN Arise Networks weekly global movie review & interview show and is the first African- American hosted film review television show ever. Additionally Mike is a recurring guest critic on Neil Rosen’s film review show Talking Pictures on NY1 on TWC, PBSNEWHOUR, & Mornings with Maria on FOXBUSINESS.

Sargent is a nationally quoted flm critic whose quotes have been used in national television, print and radio advertising campaigns. He is also a founding member of both the African American Film Critics Association(AAFCA) & Black Film Critics Circle (BFCC).

The BFCC holds the distinction of being the only organization developed by and catering to the needs of African American media professionals who critique movies and cover the flm industry.

Mike is also an established writer and director. His writing and directing debut feature flm, Personals (aka Hook’d Up) starred Malik Yoba (of , NY Undercover and Why Did I Get Married) and Stacey Dash (of the flm and TV show and the feature flm debut of Jim Gaffgan. Personals was the opening night flm at Los Angeles’ Pan African Film Festival in 1999.

Mike has returned to flm-making and is currently completing BAD BOYS: A Documentary. This six years in-the-making, in-depth, investigative flm examines why, throughout history, women and society in general, have been in love with bad boys.

[14 ] Seith Mann EXECUTIVE PRODUCER/WRITER & DIRECTOR

SEITH MANN is the Executive Producer, Writer and Director of VH1’s original-movie- turned-series The Breaks. Mann was inspired to become a director when he saw Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. Mann graduated from and later earned an MFA in flm and television from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Mann’s thesis flm at NYU, Five Deep Breaths, received a Spike Lee Fellowship and premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. The flm was selected to screen at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival and was one of four American shorts to screen at the Cinefondation Competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. It won a Gold Plaque for Narrative Short Film at the 2003 Chicago International Film Festival and also won the Best Narrative Short Film award at the 2003 Los Angeles IFP/West Film Festival.

Filmmaker magazine named Mann one of their 25 new faces of independent flm in 2003. Feature Project gave Mann the Gordon Parks Award for Emerging African-American Filmmakers following Five Deep Breath’s release.

In 2006, Mann joined the directing crew of ’s fourth season. His debut episode of The Wire was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

Mann was nominated for a DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series for his work on Grey’s Anatomy and he has also directed episodes of The Walking Dead, Homeland, Everybody Hates Chris, Entourage, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Cold Case and many others.

Mann is currently working on a feature flm, Harriet, about Harriet Tubman, who helped free hundreds of slaves from the South after escaping from slavery herself in 1849.

[15] Shomi Patwary MUSIC VIDEO & TELEVISION DIRECTOR CREATIVE DIRECTOR/TASTEMAKER

Mahfuzur “Shomi” Patwary was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is a Bengali American filmmaker and co-founder of the creative collective, Illusive Media, which is based in Virginia Beach, Virginia and New York, NY.

While a student at Old Dominion University, Patwary co-created the multimedia artists collective, Illusive Media, with his lifelong friend and classmate,Philip Ly. Initially, the group began creating a web presence for underground artists, but later helped national acts like Sean Paul and N*E*R*D create an image that connected with a broader fan base. As websites like MySpace began to lose their grip on the internet, bloggers became the dominant source of information for those who were internet savvy. Shomi and Illusive Media began directing music videos, giving bloggers exclusive content to certain artists.

Through Illusive Media, Shomi has directed music videos for many noteworthy artists. His most notable and frequent collaborators include Lupe Fiasco, Major Lazer, A$AP Rocky, Pusha-T, , Joey Badass, and many others.

One of the most notable music videos directed by Patwary is Lupe Fiasco’s “I’m Beamin,” which received critical acclaim from numerous critics, including the , which called the Lupe Fiasco ‘I’m Beamin’ video “a breath of fresh air”. The 2011 MTV Movie Awards listed the video as #4 on its “Best Of” playlist.

In 2011 Shomi partnered with Eleanor Earl of E.L.Earl Entertainment to continue his expansion into creating content for film, television and online platforms. Stay tuned as Patwary is poised to direct feature films and episodic television programming in the not-so -distant future.

In April 2012, Shomi was brought on board as an in-house music video director and television producer by Karmaloop.com’s TV division. He was the mastermind behind rebuilding Karmaloop TV’s television and music video brands by tying them in with the online retail giant’s streetwear image. When he took the helm at Karmaloop, Patwary shot videos for Beyoncé, A$AP Rocky, Diplo, Wale, and A-Trak. In 2014, Shomi left his appointment with Karmaloop to join the editorial team at the FADER magazine. During his tenure at the FADER, he oversaw all video production as Senior Video Producer. Currently, Shomi continues to direct and produce content for brands such as Disney, Mountain Dew, Kevin Hart, The Weekend, Jaden Smith, the NBA, Hampton University and others. RE’SHAUN FREAR began his entertainment career, specializing in licensing and accounting for The Walt Disney Company. By 1999, Frear joined the consumer products department of the Latin American Division at Warner Brothers Studios. It was while working at Warner Brothers Studio that Frear continued to broaden his TV and ilm skills, transferring to the WB Network as a television analyst.

Frear continued to build his brand and joined the television and flm department of Gotham Entertainment. Gotham is well-known for feature flms such as ’s “Run Tell Dat,” “You So Crazy,” “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” and Jada Pinkett- Smith’s “Woo.” During his tenure at Gotham Entertainment, he worked on several projects including, “Spiritual Warriors.” Through his creativity and hard-work, he gained the trust and respect of the owners and together they began a partnership with David Raynr and “Bright Idea Entertainment” was formed.

Frear permanently graduated to Independent Films with 2006’s critically acclaimed film “Dirty Laundry.” Starring Loretta Devine and Rockmond Dunbar, “Dirty Laundry” won the Blockbuster Audience Award for best U.S. Feature from American Black Film Festival (2006). The film was also nominated for Best ndependent Film by the NAACP Image Awards and the GLAAD Awards (2007). Frear also produced “Black Poker Stars” (2008) starring Katt Williams and , which was recognized as the #1 show for Black Entertainment Television (BET).

Over the years, Frear’s film and TV programs have secured notable awards and nominations. In February 2013, he scored producing success with the Lifetime TV showing of his film “Pastor Brown” starring Salli Richardson and actor/director Rockmond Dunbar. Premiering against the stiff competition of “Beyonce’s” HBO documentary, “Pastor Brown” resoundingly satisfied Lifetime’s TV audience and captured the #1 position for cable movies with 2.2 million viewers.

In addition to “Pastor Brown” and “Dirty Laundry,” Frear’s films include “Christmas in Compton” (2012) starring Eric Roberts, Keith David, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Omar Gooding, “PAWN” (2013) an Anchor Bay film starring , Nikki Reed, Common and Stephen Lang, Macbett (2013) co-produced and starring Terrence Howard, and , “Home” (2014) starring Gbenga Akinnagbe and Tawny Cypress and “Knucklehead” (2014) starring and Gbenga Akinnagbe.
