We look forward to screening films and facilitating panel discussions that highlight the complexities and nuances of the African-American identity. Topics will include 21st-Century dating, black superheroes, fatherhood, faith-based films, health disparities, marriage and family and much more. "From Hampton to Hollywood," the theme for this year’s film festival, is especially apropos since our opening night film, Spike Lee’s "Do the Right Thing," features the work of two highly esteemed Hampton University alumni. Robi Reed ("Do the Right Thing", "Malcolm X", "Crooklyn") served as casting director on the film and Ruth Carter ("Do the Right Thing", "Selma", "Malcolm X") was the film’s costume designer. Following the screening, Monty Ross, a legendary film producer ("Do The Right Thing", "She's Gotta Have It", "Malcolm X") will be reunited with Carter and Reed to discuss their individual contributions to groundbreaking and timeless cinema. The discussion will be moderated by celebrated film critic, Mike Sargent("PBS Newshour" WBAI). The School of Liberal Arts & Education is pleased to offer the rare opportunity for students to interact with alumni who took degrees in liberal arts from Hampton and went to Hollywood and became trailblazers in their respective fields. Their triumphant return to Hampton University affirms that our current students have the same capacity to make an indelible mark on the entertainment industry in years to come. We’ll see you at the movies!
