HANDOUT: https://theancestryguy.com/20210727.pdf FamilySearch The Five W’s 1) WHAT is it? FamilySearch is a nonprofit organization and website offering genealogical records, education, and software

2) WHO is it? FamilySearch is operated by The Church of Christ of Latter-Day The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the “official name” of the Church and is also known as or also referred to as The Restored Church of Jesus Christ. Church Members are sensitive to this. “Mormons” or simply “Latter Day Saints”, “LDS” should NOT be used or be used very sparingly. FamilySearch is closely connected with the Church's Family History Department. The Family History Department was originally established in 1894 as the Genealogical Society of (GSU) . So FamilySearch’s Predecessor is The Genealogical Society of Utah

3) WHY? Facilitating LDS ordinances for deceased relatives is a major aim of the organization . So part of the Doc- trine for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is to seal and baptize the dead. Is the largest genealogy organization in the world offering a collection of records, resources, and services designed to help people learn more about their family history . Is FREE and registration is preferred. Registration (A Personal Account) will get you more access. Commercial spin offs include Ancestry & MyHeritage among others.

4) WHERE is it available? Keep This in Mind Is staffed by Volunteers & the Missionaries of The Church. Does not own many of the resources they offer. FamilySearch offers their Archives, Services & Preservation in exchange for access to these resources.

FamilySearch Explains Access To Records... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjLxSac06jw

5) WHEN is it available? CONTRACTS & RESTRICTIONS

FamilySearch seeks and negotiates permissions by specific contract to give access to these resources These contracts are similar to other such contracts used by other genealogical services such as Ances- try.com, FindMyPast.com , MyHeritage.com and so on. FamilySearch also partners with many of these commercial services. So there can be a crossover of sorts because they in effect share information with these other genealogical services if permitted by the contract

These contracts have a beginning & end date and change frequently. The Original Owners control access The resource may be available one day and very possibly not the next day. So utilize and exercise the access to the resource when you find it! Access to the resources is often restricted By FamilySearch’s Membership (Registration) Level By a time frame that the resource is available. By Location Location of the access point Location of the resource Subject Matter’s Location (Topic) By the number of users… people accessing the resource at any one time. By Law (Governmental control) By Privacy Concerns
