Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

Orientalism was defined for the lecture as the assimilation or imitation of that which is oriental in religious or philosophical thought, or in art. Through various mediums, including architectural examples, quotes from Mormons and their detractors, and travel literature, Dr. Francaviglia demonstrates that not only Mormons were compared to Oriental peoples and assigned Oriental traits, but they also actively attributed such traits -

What’s in a Name? As Shakespeare had Juliet say, “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Maybe so, but in New Orleans there’s more to a name than meets the ear. The Crescent City is home to many sweet-sounding names, especially those of its ladies. What could be more beautiful names than those of Voudou practitioner Marie Laveau or sarong siren Dorothy Lamour? Actually Dorothy was born Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton, but her parents’ marriage lasted only a few years. Her mother re-married a man named Clarence Lambour, and Dorothy took his last name. Lambour became Lamour, a much better choice in that it oozes love (toujours l’amour). She took it along with her on all those “Road” pictures with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. Dorothy Lamour (1914 – 1996), New Orleans’ own siren in a sarong Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after having recorded over 60 singles for the Imperial label, placing 40 songs in the R&B top 10 charts and 11 top 10 singles on the pop charts, Antoine Dominique “Fats” Domino, Jr. is a New Orleans musical legend with a Creole name to match. It flows from the lips mellifluously like a beignet washed down with café au lait. A sure sign that a name has star potential is the fact that someone has tried, in some way, to usurp its power. In the case of “Fats”, American Bandstand host Dick Clark’s wife Barbara took the name, changed it around ever so slightly and bestowed a new name to an up-and-coming Rock and Roll personality. -

ISSN 1065-9366 (print), 2168-3158 (online) Abstract In the Book of Mormon, two records (a large engraved stone and twenty-four gold plates) contain the story of an ancient civilization known as the Jaredites. There appears to be evidence of an unpublished third record that provides more information on this people and on the history of the world. When the brother of Jared received a vision of Jesus Christ, he was taught many things but was instructed not to share them with the world until the time of his death. The author proposes that the brother of Jared did, in fact, write those things down shortly before his death and then buried them, along with the interpreting stones, to be revealed to the world according to the timing of the Lord. -

Wisco, of the Bodies Filled with Light exhibition. onsidering that the discipline of human anatomy was quite rudimen- Ctary when the scriptures were written and compiled, it is surprising that there are 9,123 references to the subject in the LDS standard works, which results statistically in a reference every 4.6 verses.1 In comparison, the King James Version of the Bible alone contains 6,525 references, yielding a refer- ence every 4.7 verses. In the standard works, the top five anatomical parts mentioned are the hand, heart, eyes, mouth, and flesh; in the King James Version they are hand, heart, eyes, mouth, and feet.2 Why are there so many references to human anatomy in holy writ? What does this number of references say about the human body? And what can we learn from these references? Here are eight reasons for the frequent anatomy references: 1. -

Horn Wright State University We examine the history, processes, and motivations which explain in part why and how the French change their names. Studying a small but representative sample of official name changes mandatorily published in the JournaL OfficieL de La Republique Franfaise at certain moments of post-World War II history (1946, 1963, and 1992-1995), we identify the four most important reasons for changing names: because they are obscene or. pejorative; ridiculous; perceived as too foreign, especially too Arab or too Jewish; or to add the patent of nobility . While we express surprise that names of these kinds still exist in contemporary France, we also recognize that the decision to request a name change at this late date is the last refuge for families who have long suffered indignities and humiliations because of their names. BYU-Pathway Worldwide Devotional February 11, 2020 “Your Spiritual Pathway” Elder Chi Hong (Sam) Wong Of the Seventy Welcome! I am blessed to be sharing a message with you faithful BYU-Pathway Worldwide students. As you pursue education online, I imagine there will be times when you feel alone. My hope as I speak to you today is that you will realize that you are not alone; you and 45,000 other online students are on this great learning adventure together! (That is more than twice the seating capacity of the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.) You also have Church leaders, instructors, mentors, friends, service missionaries, and many others willing to help you. I was born in Hong Kong, China. Carol (who is now my wonderful wife) introduced me to the gospel, and I was baptized on Valentine’s Day, 1982. Carol had graduated from BYU-Hawaii and knew education would benefit me, so we moved to Hawaii and I too began my pursuit of higher education at that same university. The journey was very challenging! I was trying to complete my education in a foreign language. After my first semester, the regulation changed and, instead of being allowed to work 30 hours a week as a married student with an international student visa, I could only work 20. Our family lost a third of our income instantly, when we didn’t have much to start with. Thankfully, Heavenly Father guided me to an academic scholarship. But I would have to get almost all As to keep the full scholarship, which we really needed.
