Assignment 4
It’s time to travel to Hwange to interview Jacqueline. Start by reading about her on this site or on pages 84-89 of The Globe. You should also take the opportunity to visit the beautiful national park of the same name. Just think, you might even get to see ‘the Big Five’! Read about them on this site or on page 85 of The Globe. One of the world’s largest waterfalls, Victoria Falls, is also located here.
Betty’s organisation, Girl Child Network, has a minibus. It will take you all the way from Chitungwiza.
1. Roughly how far will you travel, if the best route goes via the city of Bulawayo? Use the scale printed on the map and measure as accurately as you can. 2. If you leave at eight o’clock in the morning and travel at an average speed of 70 km/h, what time will you arrive? 3. You will be away for almost a week. Two of these days will be spent walking in the national park, with a guide. Each person can take one small bag. What do you need to pack? Discuss this in your group and write a list. 4. The original name of Victoria Falls is Mosioa-Tunya. What does it mean? Who renamed the waterfall? (The Globe, page 89) 5. How many cubic metres of water fall over the edge of Victoria Falls every minute? (500 million litres, converted to cubic metres).
When you have read about Jacqueline, the wild animals and the waterfall, paint a picture together. Decide what should be in the painting together. The painting should tell as much as possible about Jacqueline and the area where she lives.
