No.: NO 967 607 657 MVA pesticides Pesticides are chemical agents used for controlling pests such as insects, diseases or weeds. They are often classified according to their target, and terms such as herbicides, insecticides and fungi- cides are used synonymously with pesticide. Pesticides are also classified according to chemical class such as organochlorines, organophosphates, and carbonates. The most common application of these chemicals is for crop protection. Despite their protective attributes, pesticides are poten- tially toxic to humans and to other exposed creatures. The adverse effects can range from acute; irritation of the skin and eyes, and respiratory difficulties, to chronic; endocrine disruption, repro- ductive problems and cancer. There is evidence linking pesticide exposure to birth defects, foetal death and neurodevelopmental disorder. Pesticides frequently come into contact with targets beyond those intended, including other species, air, water and soil, and are therefore also an envi- ronmental concern. In particular chlorinated pesticides, which exhibit bioaccumulation and can build up to harmful levels, and persist in the body and environment for many years. For these reasons pesticides are widely regulated and maximum levels of pesticide residues in food are stipu- lated, necessitating their analytical measurement. Pesticide Sci. 2, 7-16 (1977) Degradation of Benthiocarb in Soils as Affected by Soil Conditions* Yasuo NAKAMURA, ** Kanji ISHIKAWA** and Shozo KUWATSUKA Laboratory of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Nagoya University, Chikusa-ku, Nagoya 464, Japan (Received May 22, 1976) Some factors affecting the degradation of 14C-benthiocarb (S-4-chlorobenzylN, N- diethylthiocarbamate) labelled at the benzene-ring in soils were studied. The degra- dation rates of 14C-benthiocarb in three different soils under upland, oxidative flooded and reductive flooded conditions were compared. 14C-Benthiocarb wasrapidly degraded under oxidative conditions, but slowly under reductive conditions. Very small differences in the degradation rates were observed among different soils. Under oxidative conditions 14C-carbon dioxide was liberated remarkably with the degrada- tion of 14C-benthiocarb. The degradation was remarkably retarded by sterilizing the soils. The repeated application of benthiocarb, or its incorporation into the soil with simetryne, CNP or propanil had no significant effect on the degradation rate.     Greenpeace Research Laboratories Analytical Results 2017-01 Analysis of wastewaters and associated sediments collected from two industrial parks in China for the presence of metals and organic chemical contaminants Melissa Wang, Iryna Labunska, Kevin Brigden, and David Santillo Introduction Six samples of wastewater and three samples of sediment were received from Greenpeace East Asia for analysis at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories between 22nd August 2016 and 29th September 2016. According to documentation supplied, the first batch of samples was collected from discharge pipes exiting from the territory of Qilu Chemical Industrial Park facilities (Zibo, Shandong Province, China) on 16th August 2016. The main facilities operating at this location are associated with petrochemical, chlor-alkali and coal-related chemical industries. The second batch of samples was collected from Lianyungang Chemical Industrial Park (Duigougang Town, Jiangsu Province, China) between 19th and 20th September 2016. The construction of Lianyungang Industrial Park started in 20031 and was the only provincial-level industrial park in Norther Jiangsu Province as approved by the government in May 20062. Pesticides, dyes, pharmaceutical products and biochemicals are among its major products3. Details of the samples received are provided in Table 1a, together with GPS coordinates for the sample collection locations in Table 1b. All samples were analysed quantitatively for the presence of a range of metals. Concentrations of metals in both whole and filtered water were determined in order to distinguish between metals associated with suspended matter and those present in dissolved form in the water. All samples were also analysed qualitatively for the presence of semi-volatile (solvent-extractable) organic compounds, and separately for the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including quantitative analysis for a range of common VOC environmental contaminants.

Co., Ltd., Shibukawa, Shimizu, Shizuoka-ken Received July 19, 1972 Benthiocarb labeled at benzyl methylene group with carbon-14 was synthesized and studied on the distribution, excretion and metabolism in white mice. Benthiocarb was rapidly translocated into organs after oral administration. Radioactive substances were also rapidly eliminated mainly into urine, slightly into feces and little into expiration. Major metabolites in urine were identified as 4-chlorohippuric and 4-chlorobenzoic acids, and small amounts of glucuronides of the latter acid and 4-chlorobenzyl alcohol were detected. Benthio carb was degraded in liver homogenates, in which the microsomal fraction showed the largest activity, and the degradation was accelerated by reduced NADP as the cofactor for the reac tion. N-Desethylbenthiocarb, bis(4-chlorobenzyl) mono- and di-sulfides, and 4-chlorobenzoic acid were identified in the incubation mixture of the liver homogenates. The main metabolic pathway in mice seemed to be as follows; parent benthiocarb and/or the N-desethylbentiocarb were hydrolyzed, and the produced 4-chlorobenzylmercaptan presumed to be oxidized finally to 4-chlorobenzoic acid, which then conjugated with glycine to produce 4-chlorohippuric acid. Benthiocarb, 4-chlorobenzyl N,N-diethyl- 4-Chlorobenzyl chloride was reacted with sodium thiolcarbamate, is a pre-emergence herbicide N,N-diethylthiolcarbamate to produce 14C-benthiocarb, which was purified till 99% in the radio-purity by thin (Saturn, trade name of Kumiai Chemical Ind.
