Humber River State of the Watershed Report – Nature-based Recreation 2008 Humber River State of the Watershed Report – Nature-based Recreation EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The variety of landscapes, features and nature-based recreation destinations in the Humber River watershed provide potential for a wide range of recreational activities including walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, wildlife-viewing, picnicking, camping, bicycling, horseback riding, golfing, fishing, swimming and exploring cultural heritage sites. • Urban development and population growth in Humber watershed municipalities will likely result in increased use of existing greenspace and nature-based recreation facilities and demand for additional greenspace and facilities. • There are approximately 8,800 hectares of public greenspace in the Humber River watershed (10% of the watershed). Most of the greenspace is owned by the TRCA (6,644 hectares or 75%). The quantity of greenspace in the Humber watershed increased by 243 hectares between 2000 and 2005. • Oak Ridges Corridor Park, created through the transfer of 428 hectares of land from private owners and developers to the Province of Ontario in 2004, protects the last remaining natural corridor link between eastern and western parts of the Oak Ridges Moraine in Richmond Hill and represents a major addition to the Humber watershed greenspace system. • The length of inter-regional trails in the Humber River watershed totals 213 km. The total length of inter-regional trails has increased by 28 km since 2000 and an additional 15 km of inter-regional trails are proposed to be built in the watershed. • Numerous municipalities have proposed new local trails in the Humber River watershed, totaling 168 km in length. -

STAFF REPORT ACTION REQUIRED Port Union Road – Environmental Assessment Addendum Date: April 14, 2014 To: Public Works and Infrastructure Committee From: General Manager, Transportation Services Wards: Ward 44 (Scarborough East) Reference P:\2014\Cluster B\TRA\TIM\pw14006tim.docx Number: SUMMARY An Environmental Assessment study for Port Union Road was undertaken in 2002–2004 and endorsed by City Council, with the Ministry of Environment-mandated public review completed in 2004. The preferred design solution, intended to address traffic delays particularly in the northbound direction, was to be implemented in two phases: the first consisted of intersection modifications to Kingston Road and Port Union Road, while the second was a widening of the road from Lawrence Avenue to Island Road, to be carried out in the future following an additional round of public consultation. The first phase of the work was carried out in 2005, with the intersection improvements at Kingston Road. The second phase of the works (widening), currently scheduled for 2019 and included in the Ten Year Capital Program, is being advanced to a 2016 construction date. The Addendum to the 2004 Environmental Assessment has included an updated traffic analysis, an additional public meeting, and modifications to the EA preferred design to reflect current conditions and minimize impacts to property and the community where possible. The revised preferred design adds a second northbound traffic lane as previously recommended, and in total consists of the following principal -

Results that continue to indicate a degraded or further degrading environment include an overall reduction in fish abundance, a high composition of benthivores, an increase in invasive species, an increase in generalist species biomass, yet a decrease in specialist species biomass, and a decrease in cool water Electrofishing in the Toronto Harbour thermal guild species biomass in embayments. Results that may indicate a change in a positive community health direction include no significant changes to species richness, a marked increase in diversity in embayments, a decline in non-native species in embayments and open coasts (despite the invasion of round goby), a recent increase in native species biomass, fluctuating native piscivore dynamics, increased walleye abundance, and a reduction in the proportion of degradation tolerant species. -

Project Manager, Engineering Projects Restoration & Infrastructure Division Toronto and Region Conservation Authority 9755 Canada Company Avenue, Vaughan, ON, L4H 0A3 [email protected] EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) continues to work towards promoting healthy rivers and shorelines, protection of greenspaces and biodiversity, and sustainable communities to improve people’s lives within our growing region. The Region of York Environmental Services and TRCA Engineering Projects collectively operate the Integrated Infrastructure Protection Works Program to monitor, design and implement remedial erosion control works to protect at risk Region of York infrastructure. The Leslie Collector sewer has been identified to be at risk of exposure from natural creek erosion and migration at several locations along German Mills Creek. The study area is located within German Mills Settlers Park, in the City of Markham and commences approximately 660 metres south of John Street. The study area includes Leslie Collector maintenance holes MH6 to MH10 that corresponds with infrastructure erosion hazard Sites I-152, P-060, P-062, P-065, P-068 and I-151. The German Mills Settlers Park Sanitary Infrastructure Protection Project is being completed in accordance with a Schedule B Municipal Water and Wastewater Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA). The focus of this study is to assess the level of risk to infrastructure and the environment, provide preliminary design alternatives, and proceed through the MCEA. As required under the Schedule B MCEA planning process, a public information session has been held over the course of the study with input being sought from any interested agencies, community members and First Nations groups. -
