VOLUME 11, NUMBER 9, MAY 1ST, 2003 Social Services Minister Tours Abaco Hon. Melanie Griffin Consulted with Local Social Service Personnel The Minister for Social Services and Community Development, Ms. Melanie Griffin, visited Cooper’s Town, Marsh Harbour and Sandy Point on April 10 and 11. Her visits to Cooper’s Town and Sandy Point were brief and were basically fact find- ing missions. Accompanying Ms. Griffin was Ms. Mellany Zonicle, Director of Ser- vices, and Mrs. Barbara Burrows, Perma- nent Secretary. The trip was shortened when the early morning Bahamasair flight was forced to turn back due to extreme weather between Cherokee and Marsh Harbour, fi- nally arriving by mid-afternoon. While in Marsh Harbour Ms. Griffin held a morning workshop at the Resource Cen- ter with agencies dealing with juvenile prob- lems. Attending were the Magistrate, the Prosecutor, Social Services and the Juve- nile Panel. The workshop gave the various agencies a better appreciation of the prob- lems and what must be done to improve the situation. The ultimate goal is to reintro- duce children into their setting and not per- petuate confinement in Nassau treatment centers. On Friday afternoon she visited the Ev- ery Child Counts facility operated by the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was visibly impressed with the discipline The Hon. The eight boat sailing adventure also includes Venture Scouts, once known as Girl Scouts. The following was taken from a report written by Rachel Green of the initial spring crew from Michigan. Scout Troop 476 and Venture Crew 452 from Michigan arrived to sail on Le Pecheur D’Etoiles, one of the Sea Base sail boats. It was to be home for the next six days. The boat set sail that evening and anchored at Matt Lowe’s Cay. Day two, after morning chores, they set full sail for Mermaid Reef, raising all five sails in the wind. Snorkeling over the protected reef, the crew saw many types of fish including crawfish, star fish and even a nurse shark. The boat had to return to Marsh Harbour due to a gale. That night there was a party and bowline typing championship competi- tion. The next day the LePecheur was land bound due to winds so the crew went snor- keling off a beach, shopped and that evening had a guest who showed them how to weave hats, baskets and birds from coconut leaves. The next morning they set sail for Baker’s Bay where they spent the next two days. On the way they practiced man-over board drill. At Baker’s they explored the area of the old resort, others walked the beach and snorkeled off the docks. They snorkeled around an old shipwreck right off the shore where they found many fish and conch. At night they enjoyed cooking dinner over a bonfire which they shared with the visiting crew of the Kalaha. Their days were filled with learning com- munications on the seas and snorkeling.
