  • A La Sombra Del Latin Lover: Antonio Moreno En El Cine De Hollywood De Los Años Veinte
Rocío ALCALA DEL OLMO OLEA Universitat de Valencia, España A LA SOMBRA DEL LATIN LOVER: ANTONIO MORENO EN EL CINE DE HOLLYWOOD DE LOS AÑOS VEINTE.

  • Lillian Gish
Lillian Gish Lived: October 14, 1893 - February 27, 1993 Worked as: director, film actress, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Mark Garrett Cooper In 1920, Lillian Gish both delivered a landmark performance in D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East and directed her sister Dorothy in Remodelling Her Husband. This was her sole director credit in a career as a screen actor that began with An Unseen Enemy in 1912 and ended with The Whales of August in 1987. Personal correspondence examined by biographer Charles Affron shows that Gish lobbied Griffith for the opportunity to direct and approached the task with enthusiasm. In 1920, in Motion Picture Magazine, however, Gish offered the following assessment of her experience: “There are people born to rule and there are people born to be subservient. I am of the latter order. I just love to be subservient, to be told what to do” (102). One might imagine that she discovered a merely personal kink. In a Photoplay interview that same year, however, she extended her opinion to encompass all women and in doing so slighted Lois Weber, one of Hollywood’s most productive directors. “I am not strong enough” to direct, Gish told Photoplay, “I doubt if any woman is. I understand now why Lois Weber was always ill after a picture” (29). What should historical criticism do with such evidence? By far the most common approach has been to argue that Gish did not really mean what the press quotes her as saying. Alley Acker, for instance, urges us not to be fooled by Gish’s “Victorian modesty” and goes on to provide evidence of her authority on the set (62).

  • Greater Mexico's Ramón Novarro
Greater Mexico’s Ramón Novarro: Between Latin Lover and Aztec Prince Juan Sebastián Ospina León * Abstract: This article explores the construction of Ramón Novarro—the first Mexican actor to reach Hollywood stardom—as a “matinee idol” for women within multiple and competing, cultural discourses in Mexico City and Los Angeles. Looking at trade journals, periodicals catering to American, Mexican-American, and Mexican readerships, as well as Novarro’s starring role in Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ (Fred Niblo, 1925), I trace the contradictory underpinnings shaping his star persona along class, ethnic, gendered, and sexed lines. Unlike that of Rudolph Valentino, Novarro’s star persona struck the right balance as an oddly de-eroticized Latin lover. This balance would allow for Novarro’s meteoric rise, within the growing nativist culture of mid-1920s Hollywood, against the backdrop of the Italian beau’s sudden fall. Keywords: Latino Hollywood, Ramon Novarro, latin lover, illustrated periodicals, star studies.

  • Abstract J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series and C.S. Lewis' The
Abstract J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia reveal numerous truths about the human condition, and although fantasy fiction is often overlooked, exploring it helps readers grasp reality and increase their understanding of the world. Amongst the central ideas found in both series are hope, voluntary sacrifice, and resilience in the face of evil, all of which are virtues espoused in the Bible. Furthermore, both authors contrast “reality” and the “secondary world.” Protagonists travel from the “primary world” to the “secondary world” where they become empowered, finding within themselves previously unrealized potential and agency; for although imperfect, the “secondary world,” offers solutions and consolations. Moreover, the similarities between repressive regimes in our world and the political and social turmoil found in the stories can enable readers to gain insight into what it is like to live under an authoritarian government. Additionally, through symbols like the serpent and prophecies involving infant boys, the two stories clearly allude to the Bible, particularly to the story of Jesus. Characters in both narratives exhibit Christocentric attributes such as pacifism and a Christ-like sacrificial nature. Notably, Harry and Aslan embody the Christian Messiah through death and resurrection, whilst the main antagonists flesh out the figure of Satan in creative ways. Unlike Lewis’ clear picture of Jesus in Aslan, Rowling’s “Christ”— i.e., Harry— represents flawed humanity through the mix of good intentions and egocentric actions. However, Rowling’s villain, Voldemort, derives directly from notions of evil in the Bible, making him flat and archetypical. Lewis’ theological beliefs are plain, especially regarding evil, as he frequently incorporates common Biblical motifs in his stories.

  • Christian Messages in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Li Xiaobin EN2302 Level III English, Fall 2010 School of Teacher Education Kristianstad University Jane Mattisson Christian Messages in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe This essay discusses the presence of Christian messages in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (hereafter referred to as The Lion). It demonstrates that although The Lion, carries with Christian messages and values, the messages have been successfully conveyed by C.S. Lewis in a more palatable and accessible way to the child readers. Focusing on Aslan, the lion as a Christ-like figure, the White Witch as a satanic character, and Mr. Tumnus, the Faun, a charming, talking animal with a strong personality, the essay explores the Christian messages of self-sacrifice, resurrection and redemption in The Lion. Self-sacrifice means an offering of self-interests or life given to God. In the Old Testament God commanded the people to pay for their sins by sacrificing the blood of cattle, lambs, goats, doves or pigeons. “These sacrifices were [are] pictures of Jesus’ coming as a once-for-all sacrifice for sinners” (The Holy Bible, 722).1 This essay will focus on the self- sacrifice of talking animals: Aslan, the lion, and Mr. Tumnus, the faun, showing that the one not capable of sacrificing is the opposite of good, the White Witch. Resurrection refers to “the act of coming back to life after being dead” (The Holy Bible, 722). In The Lion, the resurrection occurs both at a living creature – Aslan and in a place – Narnia, but not at the White Witch. Redemption means to “free from evil by paying a price” (The Holy Bible, 722).

Griffith, includ - ing her leading role in the highest-grossing film of the silent era, Griffith's seminal The Birth of a Nation (1915). At the dawn of the sound era, she returned to the stage and appeared in film infrequently, including well-known roles in the controversial western Duel in the Sun (1946) and the offbeat thriller The Night of the Hunter (1955). She also did considerable television work from the early 1950s into the 1980s and closed her career playing, for the first time, oppo - site Bette Davis in the 1987 film The Whales of August (which would prove to be one of Davis's last on-screen appearances). In her later years Adrian Paul Botta ([email protected]) In her later years Gish became a dedicated advocate for the appreciation and preservation of silent film. Gish is widely consid - ered to be the great - est actress of the silent era, and one of the greatest ac - tresses in cinema history. Despite being better known for her film work, Gish was also an accom - plished stage ac - tress, and she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1972.
