• In conjunction with the Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy services.

• Masters of Science and of Philosophy degrees in the following areas, Pharmaceutics, and Pharmacy Administration.

• The research focus includes Pharmacognosy and Natural Products, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physical Pharmaceutics and Dosage Form Design, Drug Delivery, Pharmacokinetics, Biopharmaceutics, Pharmacy Administration and Health Services Research. Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

• Currently 27 graduate students as of Fall 2010 • 7 Ph.D. candidates expected to complete the dissertation May 2011. • Benedict Arrey, M.S. and Henry North, M.S. facilitated tutorials for incoming Nursing students in and Physiology in 2009-Present. • Mary Maneno instructs the second year Doctor of Pharmacy Biostatistics course • Anna Teschemaker received a dissertation grant the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). • Zufan Debebe, M.S. won a NIH grant for research studies on HIV chelating agents. • Four-year entry-level professional program leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D. degree). • Focus on expanding the role of Pharmacists in clinical practice. • HU Pharmacists are prepared to be leaders in the interdisciplinary team of Doctors, Nurses and Pharmacists. • Only Pharmacy School in the Nation’s Capital. • Extensive collaborations with the Howard University Hospital. • Offers a in Nursing and a Masters of Science in Nursing. • BSN offers several tracks (1) a 22 month advanced placement program for students with previous degrees, or significant number of credits in specific course areas. (2) a Registered Nurse completion program including provisions for direct articulation from Prince George’s Community College or Montgomery College. • MSN offers a Primary Family Nurse Practitioner, and a Post Master’s Certificate. Since 2000, we initiated programs for K-12 students, partnerships with community colleges and four year institutions. The Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy students participate in graduate Faculty/Student Research.

• Initiated to expand Teaching, Research and Recruitment of first year Professional students. • The funding of this merit-based tuition scholarship is to award students’ with outstanding performance in the health professional programs. • Over 106 students have received scholarships from this program. COE Peer Tutorial Sessions

• Run by peer tutors in small groups and on an individual basis for nearly every course in the curriculum, depending upon need.

• All students are provided academic advisement and counseling services through the Center of Excellence.

• Since 2000, over 670 students have been provided tutorial assistance. COE Academic Reinforcement

• To strengthen student’s comprehension and application of basic science concepts. • An extension of the tutorials, the students are advised, counseled and closely monitored to ensure early intervention strategies when academic problems are identified. • Currently, the counselors provides services to 10-20 students daily. • The ethnic composition of the students include; 184 (67.0%) African Americans; 58 (21.0%) URM Asian Americans; 17 (6.0%) Hispanics, 2 (0.7%) Native Americans, and 15 (5.4%) Non Hispanic Whites and Non-URM Asians. • Approximately 55% of the students were female. CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

• There continues to be a need for a more diverse applicant pool of under-represented minorities to apply to and enroll in the programs offered through the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences.

• The development of a competitive applicant pool of minority students is reflected in the School of Pharmacy’s, as well as the rest of the College’s current enrollment.

• For the 2008-2009 academic year, there were a total of 277 students in the School of Pharmacy.
