The very heart of the capital is in the Upper City, the centre of artistic and business life of Minsk. The majority of Minsk dwellers associate it with the City Hall and a Governor’s Carriage sculpture nearby. The Holy Spirit Cathedral – the city’s main Orthodox temple and an architectural monument of the 17th century – is also situated here. The City Hall (constructed in 1600 to commemorate the Magdeburg rights granted to Minsk earlier and reconstructed in 2003 according to old plans and sketches) is situated at 2a Plošča Svabody. The Cathedral of Saint Virgin Mary – a Roman Catholic baroque building constructed in 1700-1710, also known as Jesuit cathedral – is right across the road from the City Hall. Internacyjanaĺnaja vulica features the Wankowicz mansion museum, an architectural monument of the 19th century. In summer, several streets in the Upper City are temporarily pedestrianised and weekend evenings sometimes feature musical performances. If you go down from Plošča Svabody towards Niamiha, you will see another important Minsk church – St Peter and St Paul’s Cathedral (4 Rakaŭskaja vulica). The Trinity Hill (also known as the Trinity Suburb) is a picturesque antique quarter on the bank of the River Svisloch. The Rakaŭskaje Suburb (Rakaŭskaje pradmiescie) is one of the few quarters with buildings preserved since the 19th century. Small houses alternate with factory buildings in which the work is still in full swing.
