Introduction Although they were for a while “dissociated” (Spiegel, 2006) from the clinical and scientific arena, dissociative disorders have in the last several years received a renewed interest among several groups of researchers, who embarked on the work of identifying and describing their underlying neural correlates. Dissociative disorders are characterized by transient or chronic failures or disruptions of integration of otherwise integrated functions of consciousness, memory, perception, identity or emotion. The DSM-IV-TR (2000) includes nowadays under the heading of dissociative disorders several diagnostic entities, such as dissociative amnesia and fugue, depersonalization disorder, dissociative identity disorder and dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (such as Ganser syndrome). In contrast to DSM-IV-TR, ICD-10 (1992) also comprises under the category of dissociative (conversion) disorder the entity of conversion disorder (with its various forms), which is in DSM-IV-TR (2000) captured under the heading of somatoform disorders (and probably will remain under the same heading in the upcoming DSM-V). Dissociative disorders had been previously subsumed under the diagnostic construct of hysteria, which had described the occurrence of various constellations of unexplained medical symptoms, without evidence of tissue pathology that can adequately or solely account for the symptom(s). Although not the first one who used the term dissociation or who suggested a connection between (early) traumatic experiences and psychiatric symptomatology (van der Kolk & van der Hart, 1989; Breuer & Freud, 1895), it is Janet (1898, 1907) who claimed dissociation as a mechanism related to traumatic experiences that accounted for the various manifestations of hysteria. -

LaRocque Suparna Rajaram Memory Disorders Research Center, VA Boston Healthcare Stony Brook University System, and Boston University School of Medicine Objective: This study aimed to resolve discrepant findings in the literature regarding the effects of massed repetition and a single long study presentation on memory in amnesia. Method: Experiment 1 assessed recognition memory in 9 amnesic patients and 18 controls following presentation of a study list that contained items shown for a single short study presentation, a single long study presentation, and three massed repetitions. In Experiment 2, the same encoding conditions were presented in a blocked rather than intermixed format to all participants from Experiment 1. Results: In Experiment 1, control participants showed benefits associated with both types of extended exposure, and massed repetition was more beneficial than long study presentation, F(2, 34) ϭ 14.03, p Ͻ .001, partial 2 ϭ .45. In contrast, amnesic participants failed to show benefits of either type of extended exposure, F Ͻ 1. In Experiment 2, both groups benefited from repetition, but did so in different ways, F(2, 50) ϭ 4.80, p ϭ .012, partial 2 ϭ .16. Amnesic patients showed significant and equivalent benefit associated with both types of extended exposure, F(2, 16) ϭ 5.58, p ϭ .015, partial 2 ϭ .41, but control participants again benefited more from massed repetition than from long study presentation, F(2, 34) ϭ 23.74, p Ͻ .001, partial 2 ϭ .58. -

Changing minds: Discussions in neuroscience, psychology and education The science of learning is an interdisciplinary field that is of great interest to educators who often want to understand the cognitive and physiological processes underpinning student development. Research from neuroscience, psychology and education often informs our ideas about the science of learning, or ‘learning about learning’. However, while research in these three areas is often comprehensive, it’s not always presented in a way that is easily comprehensible. There are many misconceptions about neuroscience, psychology and education research, which have been perpetuated through popular reporting by the media and other sources. These in turn have led to the development of ideas about learning and teaching that are not supported by research. That’s why the Centre for Science of Learning @ ACER has launched the paper series, Changing Minds: Discussions in neuroscience, psychology and education. The Changing Minds series addresses the need for accurate syntheses of research. The papers address a number of topical issues in education and discuss the latest relevant research findings from neuroscience, psychology and education. Changing Minds does not provide an exhaustive review of the research, but it does aim to provide brief syntheses of specific educational issues and highlight current or emerging paradigms for considering these issues across and within the three research fields. -

Two experiments were designed to test whether state dissociation is related to objective memory disturbances, or whether dissociation is confined to the realm of subjective experience. High trait dissociative participants (Nexp:1 ¼ 25; Nexp:2 ¼ 25) and low trait dissociative participants (Nexp:1 ¼ 25; Nexp:2 ¼ 25) were selected from normal samples (Nexp:1 ¼ 372; Nexp:2 ¼ 341) on basis of scores on the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES). Participants watched an extremely aversive film, after which state dissociation was measured by the Peri-traumatic Dissociative Experience Questionnaire (PDEQ). Memory disturbances were assessed 4h later (Exp. 1) or 1 week later (Exp. 2). Objective memory disturbances were assessed by a sequential memory task, items tapping perceptual representations (Exp. 1), or an open question with respect to the remembrance of the film (Exp. 2). Subjective memory disturbances were measured by means of visual analogue scales assessing fragmentation and intrusions. ABSTRACT A PTSD ANALOGUE STUDY: INVESTIGATING THE ROLES OF MEMORY AND METAMEMORY IN TRAUMA-RELATED OUTCOMES Ban Hong (Phylice) Lim, Ph.D. Department of Psychology Northern Illinois University, 2016 Michelle M. Lilly, Director Trauma survivors who develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often display symptoms of memory fragmentation such as an impaired ability to recall trauma memories. These observations are consistent with prominent theories of PTSD, which consider memory fragmentation as a central feature of PTSD. Correspondingly, most empirically supported interventions for PTSD focus on addressing dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors and integrating fragmented memories of the event. More recently, this assumption has been challenged by research indicating that metamemory – one’s subjective beliefs about one’s memory functioning and quality – may partially account for reported memory fragmentation among individuals with PTSD. Memory underconfidence, regardless of whether or not it is founded or wholly accurate, may lead to feelings of anxiety, especially in the process of recalling and making sense of one’s trauma memory. Despite the intertwined nature of their relationship, the association between memory and metamemory has been understudied in the trauma literature. This dissertation investigated whether PTSD is a disorder of memory fragmentation, perceived memory fragmentation, or both by examining the association between memory and metamemory. A trauma analogue between-subjects experimental design was employed. Eighty- four healthy participants were randomly assigned to receive either positive feedback or negative feedback after completing a standardized memory assessment. Despite the use of randomization, the manipulation groups systematically differed on both baseline memory ability and baseline memory confidence. Contrary to the first hypothesis, after controlling for the effect of baseline metamemory beliefs, the groups did not differ on their recall task performance, F(1,80) = .34, p = .56. -

FALSE MEMORY SYNDROME: "THE FEMALE MALADY" 1 ERIN BRADyt The theory of memory repression has been both relied on by adult survivors as evidence of sexual crimes committed against them, and endorsed by many of the higher courts in Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Advocates of the false memory syndrome refute the scientific validity of repressed memories, and vigorously oppose their judicial acceptance, by contending that recovered memories of childhood abuse are more often the product of a therapeudic relationship gone wrong. An examination of the manner in which the false memory syndrome is being pleaded by defence counsel, and heard by Canadian courts, reveals that it is a decidedly gendered phenomenon and employed almost exclusively to describe female experience. The article explores the anti-women stereotypes which underlie the defence and seeks to demonstrate the extent to which the false memory syndrome represents a formidable obstacle to all survivors of sexual abuse seeking legal redress. -
