O’Shea, Chair This dissertation presents a critical examination of dance and multiple movements across the Coromandel in a pivotal period: the long eighteenth century. On the eve of British colonialism, this period was one of profound political and economic shifts; new princely states and ruling elite defined themselves in the wake of Mughal expansion and decline, weakening Nayak states in the south, the emergence of several European trading companies as political stakeholders and a series of fiscal crises. In the midst of this rapidly changing landscape, new performance paradigms emerged defined by hybrid repertoires, focus on structure and contingent relationships to space and place – giving rise to what we understand today as classical south Indian dance. Far from stable or isolated tradition fixed in space and place, I argue that dance as choreographic ii practice, theorization and representation were central to the negotiation of changing geopolitics, urban milieus and individual mobility.

Printed from It’s all about devotion November 09,2015, 11.34 PM IST | | THE HANS INDIA Vocal concerts by Nityasree Mahadevan and Maharajapuram R Srinivasan were filled with deep devotion and pure orthodox style at SICA’s 57th annual celebrations R Srinivasan, and Nityasree Mahadevan In the on-going SICA’s Annual Art Festival 2015 held at Ravindra Bharathi, day 4 and 5 saw mixed feelings and response from the audience. The reason being, renowned Carnatic classical musician Nityasree Mahadevan’s vocal concert could not attract the audience much and proved to be just a routine one without much enthusiasm which was expected by the audience. Perhaps every concert is an acid test for the artist, viewing from varied aspects on that particular day. The other vocal concert by Maharajapuram R Srinivsan on the fifth day won the appreciation of the music fraternity as it was purely of orthodox style and an emotive presentation with traditional built. Nityasree Mahadevan comes from an illustrious family of musicians. DK Pattammal is her paternal grandmother, while Palghat Mani Iyer is her maternal grandfather. Nityasree is an “A” top-rank artist of AIR. She started her recent concert with a famous Tyagaraja Panchratna krithi “Endaroh Mahanubhavulu’ (Sri Ragam), detailing all the charanams vociferously throwing literary taste into fore. While singing, she spelt “Mahanubhaavulu” as “Mahanubaavulu”, which needs to be noted by the artist. She then moved onto “Sambho Mahadeva” (Bhouli) of Nilakanta Sivan and “Namo Namo Raghukula Nayakaa” (Nata) and “Seetharama Dayachoodavey” (Dhanyasi) of Bhadrachala Ramadasu, all of which received much appreciation from music lovers.

Bhadrachala Ramadasa Navaratnalu Nine Gems of Ramadasa’s compositions With notations in English Compiled by: Sangita Kalanidhi Nedunuri Krishnamurthy Foreword Smt Kapilavayi Lalitha Vijayakumar is a student of classical vocal music, of Dr Seshulatha. Lalitha sings Annamayya and Ramadasu compositions in a sweet voice with devotional fervour. She introduced her father Sri N Krishna Mohan to me, the Managing Director of Sri Chakra Cements, a great philanthropist who takes deep interest in our traditional music. Above all, he is an ardent Rama bhakta. One fine morning, Sri Krishna Mohan called on me and sang one rare composition of Tyagaraja, ‘Sita lakshmana sahitam’ – that I had set to tune. It was a pleasant surprise when he told me that he had learnt it listening to my CD. He is a sincere and honest music lover. Our common interests being Rama bhakti and Sangitarchanamu, quite naturally, we soon became good friends. Long since, it has been my desire to popularize Bhakta Ramadasa’s compositions, which were once in vogue in every Telugu household and also in temples, in the Bhajana Sampradaya. Sharing my deep concern, Sri Krishna Mohan published 54 compositions of Bhakta Ramadasa, for which I wrote notations – some with old tunes and some that I tuned. All these compositions are now being sung by many in various concerts, as well as in the Bhakta Ramadasa Jayanti Festival at the abode of Lord Rama, built by our own Bhakta Ramadasa, on the pious banks of River Gowtami. This annual event Bhakta Ramadasa Jayanti conducted under my guidance, sponsored in a big way by Sri Krishna Mohan over the past 3 years, has grown to become a popular and much awaited music festival, thanks to SVBC telecasting it all over the globe.

This Online Media (OM) in the form of innumerable websites, blogs, forums, Apps etc., and other Social media like Facebook, G-Mail etc., has immense information stored in it on various subjects and has become easily accessible to everybody, at any time and wherever they reside on this earth. As far as Carnatic music (CM) is concerned, there are plenty of Web sources (WS) that provide huge information on various practical, theoretical and technical aspects. But there is also a dilemma in the followers of CM about the selection of a particular online site because there are several WS in the OM where more or less the same information is provided by more than one WS. And this makes it difficult to judge or simply follow or rely on them. Hence, there arises the need to ascertain the specific online site that exactly fulfills the purpose of the viewer better. Through this research paper, I have made an attempt to give a glimpse on few selected CM Online resources based on certain criteria, which every Carnatic person should at least give a glance once, as they aid to serve more than single purpose at a time and are found most reliable too.
