But most training camps are held in September, before an NHL season, and last nearly a month. They also include five or six preseason games, and after that goalies might still need a couple of more weeks of playing regularly to hone their timing and puck-tracking skills.

  • International Hockey Festival the Plains of Abraham: When History Catches up with the Present
PRESS RELEASE For immediate release International Hockey Festival The Plains of Abraham: when history catches up with the present Québec, January 18, 2011 – Nearly 100 years after the Stanley Cup was first seen on the Plains of Abraham, the National Battlefields Commission is proud to welcome on these grounds the 3rd International Hockey Festival, to be held next February 4 to 6 during the Québec Winter Carnival. We would like to remind you that it was at the Quebec Skating Rink (Pavillon des patineurs), located on the Plains of Abraham, that the Quebec Bulldogs played in the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada. Led by their star player Joe Malone, the Québec City team won the prestigious Stanley Cup twice, during the 1911-12 and 1912-13 seasons. Malone, a Québec City native, quickly earned the respect of supporters and other league players for his scoring talent, as well as for his impressive game style. In 1918, the building, which could accommodate nearly 2,000 spectators, was destroyed by fire. A stone’s throw from this historical Mecca, amateur hockey players will confront each other for three consecutive days during the greatest festive hockey event in the world. Sports fans are invited to enjoy the enchanting site of the Plains of Abraham when they come to visit. All kinds of entertainment are offered, including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing (if weather permits), the Odyssey multimedia exhibition, as well as a guided snowshoe tour of the park exploring the history of the sport on the Plains of Abraham. • The Boston Red Sox Saturday, June 22, 2019 * the Boston Globe
The Boston Red Sox Saturday, June 22, 2019 * The Boston Globe A familiar name made his own path to the big leagues Peter Abraham Mike — forget his last name for now — had a chance to sign for $300,000 after his junior year at Vanderbilt but turned down the Seattle Mariners because he promised his mother Anne-Marie back home in Andover that he would get his degree. He got that degree and was named first-team All-SEC and third-team All-American as a senior. The Orioles drafted him and this time he signed. Mike rose quickly in the organization, getting to Triple A in 2016. But he never could quite break through and was traded to the Giants at the end of spring training this season. Finally, after 703 minor league games, Mike was called up to the majors May 25 at the age of 28. That’s old for a rookie but not too old to achieve a lifelong dream. With his mother and wife watching from the stands at Oracle Park, Mike scored his first run that night and had three hits the next day. He has been in the lineup almost every day since and hit well. “At some point I just wanted to get there even for one day just to say I did it,” Mike said. “That was the goal, just one day. My wife was my biggest supporter. My mom was, too. This has been a big thing for my family.” It’s a heck of a story, one of persistence in the face of obstacles.

  • SABR Collegiate Baseball Committee Newsletter
SABR Collegiate Baseball Committee Newsletter Winter 2017 Society for American Baseball Research Chairman’s Letter Although the 2017 intercollegiate baseball season nears its mid-point, this is the Winter edition of our newsletter. This is the issue where we attempt to document all the players with a collegiate baseball connection who made their Major League debut in 2016. Among the anomalies in this year’s list is a player drafted from a school he never played for, Andy Burns who attended Arizona State when drafted, but never played a varsity game for the Wildcats and Dustin Mollekin who attended Lethbridge College in Alberta, Canada, but played for a team unofficially affiliated with both the two year and four year colleges in Lethbridge. Accompanying this newsletter are attachments containing corrections, for both Major and Minor League players, to the collegiate information submitted to Base- ball-Reference. Sacramento Rivercats Sacramento falls late to Fresno 7-6 Fresno, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (29-43) took a two-run lead into the eighth inning Friday night against the Fresno Grizzlies (36-38) but watched it slip away in their 7-6 defeat. Sacramento got on the board first thanks to a three-run first inning in which they sent eight men to the plate. Two of the runs came courtesy of Mac Williamson who singled home Jarrett Parker and Ryder Jones. Williamson came through again in the fifth after the Grizzlies tied things up, this time driving in Parker with a sacrifice fly for his third RBI on the night. Starter Michael Roth filled in admirably for scheduled starter Joan Gregorio, going a season-high 6.2 innings. The left-hander also threw a season-high 108 pitches during his outing while allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Fresno did their damage against the bullpen tonight however, pushing one across in the eighth off reliever Matt Reynolds and two more in the ninth with Derek Law on the mound. The River Cats and Grizzlies will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday. Fresno will send right-hander Casey Coleman (2-4, 6.27) to the hill for game one and righty Dean Deetz (0-2, 20.25) will pitch game two. Sacramento has yet to announce their starters. First pitch for game one is set for 5:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on ESPN 1320.
