T HE L AMPLIGHTER A UGUST 2013 INSIDE THIS ISSUE A View from the Porch… View from the Porch 1 Earlier this week as I was picking up the mail at our home and heading back through the car port to the side door, I overheard some laughter among my neighbors as one of them was Previews from the 2 saying goodbye. As they parted, one of them shouted back rather playfully to the other, “You Pulpit are becoming an interesting combination of George Burns and Walter Matthau.” I couldn’t help but almost laugh out loud myself at the comment. I knew exactly what he meant! WOK/Office Notes 2 Having immersed myself lately in some deeply com‐ Brunch with a Bunch 3 plex and serious theological study about questions Fellowship that haunt Christianity such as: suffering, evil, heaven and hell, forgiveness, repentance, and sal‐ Birthdays and 3 vation, etc.—it was just “good to laugh!” The very Anniversaries thought of Walter Matthau reminded me of those hilarious comedies with Jack Lemmon: The Odd Joys & Concerns Couple, and one of my all time favorites Grumpy KFFL 4 Old Men. The Book of Proverbs reminds us that laughter is good medicine for the soul. In Proverbs KFFL Sign-up sheet 5 17:22 it says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength." (NLT) Deacon Corner 6 When one’s spirit is broken, it is counterintuitive for most of us to laugh. Suffering is, of Music Corner 6 course, not a laughing matter. To laugh at suffering is to pour salt in an open wound; to add insult to injury, so to speak. Those who suffer often feel that they will never know joy or hap‐ Mission 6 piness or laughter again; so, in my mind, laughter can only be good medicine if it comes as a sheer gift of grace. A cheerful heart arises from serendipitous moments of laughter that al‐ August 2013 Calendar 7 lude to the healing and hope one has lost and may be found again despite the immense pain and despair. 2013-2014 Session and 8 Deacons In some church traditions, the Sunday following Easter is celebrated as “Holy Humor Sunday.” People gather for worship and have the opportunity to tell their favorite jokes, play innocent pranks on the pastor, sing uplifting and joyful hymns, and basically “laugh” at the defeat of sin and evil through Christ’s resurrection. Laughter has to be a tough medicine to take when one is caught in the web of immense suf‐ fering and emotional pain; but if it comes unexpectedly and unprescribed, it may be a sign that healing and hope lie not too far in the distant future. Laughter may be a redemptive and powerful witness to God’s vulnerability displayed in Christ’s suffering for us and with us; and, of our resurrection through him (cf. Phil. 3:10‐11, NIV). The Psalmist, who so often expressed the deep pain of lament, also wrote of the hope that one day joy would return. In Psalm 30:5 we read, “Weeping may tarry for a night, but joy comes with the morning.” (ESV) Please remember to I’m grateful for that serendipitous moment of overhearing my neighbors and for the sheer gift sign-up for of laughter that came so unexpectedly to lighten the load of some quite challenging and seri‐ flowers on the ous study. Now I’m off to get some DVD’s of some of my favorite comedies—and, “Grumpy “Flower Calendar” Old Men” tops the list. throughout the year. We are changing our fellowship activities back to Eve- nings Monday or Thursdays 7:45 PM primarily at owners’ homes. Owner’s can choose to host Monday Night games or Thursday night games if they have the NFL channel. Bryan Lees had a vision of a Christian Fellowship built around a game that both he and his Dad love. Bryan’s vision and commit- ment, along with Pastor Larry’s drive, has created one of the most rewarding Christian Fellowships that I have had the pleasure to be associated with. Richard Benham, Phil Myers, and I, Co-Commissioner’s of the Kirkwood Fantasy Football League, invite all members of Kirk- wood, and friends of Kirkwood to participate in the 2013 Kirkwood Fantasy Football Season. If you have never done Fantasy Football before, read the information and sign-up sheet in this issue of the Lamplighter. It is easier than you think, and is a great opportunity to be in fellowship with Christians who appreciate the complexity of a flea-flicker, and can use an amazing play on the football field to make a point about what Jesus calls us to do.
