INSIDE THIS ISSUE A View from the Porch…

View from the Porch 1 Earlier this week as I was picking up the mail at our home and heading back through the car port to the side door, I overheard some laughter among my neighbors as one of them was Previews from the 2 saying goodbye. As they parted, one of them shouted back rather playfully to the other, “You Pulpit are becoming an interesting combination of George Burns and Walter Matthau.” I couldn’t help but almost laugh out loud myself at the comment. I knew exactly what he meant! WOK/Office Notes 2 Having immersed myself lately in some deeply com‐ Brunch with a Bunch 3 plex and serious theological study about questions Fellowship that haunt Christianity such as: suffering, evil, heaven and hell, forgiveness, repentance, and sal‐ Birthdays and 3 vation, etc.—it was just “good to laugh!” The very Anniversaries thought of Walter Matthau reminded me of those hilarious comedies with Jack Lemmon: The Odd Joys & Concerns Couple, and one of my all time favorites Grumpy KFFL 4 Old Men.

The Book of Proverbs reminds us that laughter is good medicine for the soul. In Proverbs KFFL Sign-up sheet 5 17:22 it says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength." (NLT) Deacon Corner 6 When one’s spirit is broken, it is counterintuitive for most of us to laugh. Suffering is, of Music Corner 6 course, not a laughing matter. To laugh at suffering is to pour salt in an open wound; to add insult to injury, so to speak. Those who suffer often feel that they will never know joy or hap‐ Mission 6 piness or laughter again; so, in my mind, laughter can only be good medicine if it comes as a sheer gift of grace. A cheerful heart arises from serendipitous moments of laughter that al‐ August 2013 Calendar 7 lude to the healing and hope one has lost and may be found again despite the immense pain and despair. 2013-2014 Session and 8 Deacons In some church traditions, the Sunday following Easter is celebrated as “Holy Humor Sunday.” People gather for worship and have the opportunity to tell their favorite jokes, play innocent pranks on the pastor, sing uplifting and joyful hymns, and basically “laugh” at the defeat of sin and evil through Christ’s resurrection.

Laughter has to be a tough medicine to take when one is caught in the web of immense suf‐ fering and emotional pain; but if it comes unexpectedly and unprescribed, it may be a sign that healing and hope lie not too far in the distant future. Laughter may be a redemptive and powerful witness to God’s vulnerability displayed in Christ’s suffering for us and with us; and, of our resurrection through him (cf. Phil. 3:10‐11, NIV). The Psalmist, who so often expressed the deep pain of lament, also wrote of the hope that one day joy would return. In Psalm 30:5 we read, “Weeping may tarry for a night, but joy comes with the morning.” (ESV)

Please remember to I’m grateful for that serendipitous moment of overhearing my neighbors and for the sheer gift sign-up for of laughter that came so unexpectedly to lighten the load of some quite challenging and seri‐ flowers on the ous study. Now I’m off to get some DVD’s of some of my favorite comedies—and, “Grumpy “Flower Calendar” Old Men” tops the list. throughout the year. Pastor Larry AUGUST PREVIEWS FROM THE PULPIT

Kirkwood Fantasy Football 2013 The KFFL 2013 Season is Dedicated to Kirkwood Fantasy Football League (KFFL) enters its 10th year of Fellowship. We are changing our fellowship activities back to Eve- nings Monday or Thursdays 7:45 PM primarily at owners’ homes. Owner’s can choose to host Monday Night games or Thursday night games if they have the NFL channel.

Bryan Lees had a vision of a Christian Fellowship built around a game that both he and his Dad love. Bryan’s vision and commit- ment, along with Pastor Larry’s drive, has created one of the most rewarding Christian Fellowships that I have had the pleasure to be associated with.

Richard Benham, Phil Myers, and I, Co-Commissioner’s of the Kirkwood Fantasy Football League, invite all members of Kirk- wood, and friends of Kirkwood to participate in the 2013 Kirkwood Fantasy Football Season. If you have never done Fantasy Football before, read the information and sign-up sheet in this issue of the Lamplighter. It is easier than you think, and is a great opportunity to be in fellowship with Christians who appreciate the complexity of a flea-flicker, and can use an amazing play on the football field to make a point about what Jesus calls us to do. You would be surprised at the number of interesting conversations that begin with the questions; “You do Fantasy Football at your Church?”-- Or-- “You watched the football game with your Pastor?” The opportuni- ties for spreading the word at that point are limited only by your knowledge of the Gospel, or the ability to know how many touchdowns (or interceptions) your favorite threw last season. Either way, you have the opportunity to talk about our Church and its mission.

Mission is an important component of the KFFL. We continue to provide contributions to Fisher House in memory of Jeff Ghen. The Fisher House mission is to support America’s Military in their time of need by providing “a home away from home” that enables family members to be close to a loved one during their treatment. Last year we donated $350 to Fisher House.

If you are a previous owner coming back for another season, please take note of the draft dates and indicate your prefer- ence on the sign-up sheet. If you are a rookie owner, or are just “thinking about it”, please contact me at KFFLFellow- [email protected], Richard Benham at [email protected], or Phil Myers at [email protected].

Kirkwood Fantasy Football League

KFFL 2013 Information & Sign-Up Sheet

What is Fantasy Football? Fantasy Football is a game based on weekly stats and scores acquired by professional football players and teams from around the . The game of fantasy football is organized into a league that consists of “Fantasy Foot- ball Teams.” Each fantasy football team belongs to a division and consists of a roster of individual offensive players (QB. RB. WR. TE. & K.) and a defensive team drafted from across the NFL. Every week during the NFL regular season (i.e. 17 weeks), the “Team Owner (s)” submits a starting line-up from their team roster to the “League Commissioner.” The fantasy teams play head-to-head for 14 weeks. A fantasy team wins a game if their starting line-up of players collectively scores mores points than their opponent. After the 14 week regular season, there is a 3 week system of playoffs based on the indi- vidual records of all of the fantasy teams.

The Kirkwood Fantasy Football League The Kirkwood Fantasy Football League (KFFL) was inaugurated for the 2003 NFL season. The league was created to pro- vide a source of genuine fellowship among the friends and families of the Kirkwood congregation. In the KFFL there is no money to be won during the course of any season—only a trophy and some special awards. To help foster the spirit of Christian fellowship intended for the KFFL, there will be regular gatherings scheduled for team owners. Such gatherings will include the Draft, August Pre-Season Party, fellowship meetings, and a Year-End Awards Banquet.

During the Draft, team owners will be given the opportunity to review the weekly schedule and sign up to host a Sunday afternoon event at their home or at the church and/or sign up for devotions for one or more Sunday afternoon KFFL gather- ings. Go to www.nfl.com to see this year’s football schedule for all Sunday afternoon (4:00 PM) televised games and bring your calendar with you.

Team Ownership Responsibilities The Team Owner is responsible for drafting a team roster of players during the designated draft date. Among the other re- sponsibilities of the Team Owner (s) is to submit a weekly line-up and to manage the team roster throughout the season by acquiring supplemental players, waiving players from the roster, and proposing trades for players with other fantasy teams. All of these actions are contingent upon the approval of the league commissioner.

An organizational meeting will be held on Sunday, August 18th at 7 pm as part of our Pre-Season Kickoff Party. Return- ing owners team registration fee is $20.00 and first year players (rookies) is $5.00 payable on draft day. To help minimize the workload of the league commissioner, KFFL 2013 will be managed entirely through internet computer software. Each team will have the availability to submit lineups, manage their team, and run reports of stats and standings through the KFFL website. NOTE: Each fantasy team will be given an account on the KFFL 2013 website. To create this account the following information is needed: ------Name of Team Owner(s): ______

Email of Team Owner(s):______

Cont. Email of Team Owner(s):______

Team Name: ______(Please use Christian/Biblical Concepts—e.g. Jericho Conquers)

Username:______

(Must be first and second initials and last name-e.g. BCLees)

Usernames and Passwords for returning owners will be the same as last year.

Draft Dates: Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. Individual draft dates to be determined after all owners register. (Pizza will be provided. Please bring a snack or drink to share.)
