August 2013 Final T HE L AMPLIGHTER A UGUST 2013 INSIDE THIS ISSUE A View from the Porch… View from the Porch 1 Earlier this week as I was picking up the mail at our home and heading back through the car port to the side door, I overheard some laughter among my neighbors as one of them was Previews from the 2 saying goodbye. As they parted, one of them shouted back rather playfully to the other, “You Pulpit are becoming an interesting combination of George Burns and Walter Matthau.” I couldn’t help but almost laugh out loud myself at the comment. I knew exactly what he meant! WOK/Office Notes 2 Having immersed myself lately in some deeply com‐ Brunch with a Bunch 3 plex and serious theological study about questions Fellowship that haunt Christianity such as: suffering, evil, heaven and hell, forgiveness, repentance, and sal‐ Birthdays and 3 vation, etc.—it was just “good to laugh!” The very Anniversaries thought of Walter Matthau reminded me of those hilarious comedies with Jack Lemmon: The Odd Joys & Concerns Couple, and one of my all time favorites Grumpy KFFL 4 Old Men. The Book of Proverbs reminds us that laughter is good medicine for the soul. In Proverbs KFFL Sign-up sheet 5 17:22 it says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength." (NLT) Deacon Corner 6 When one’s spirit is broken, it is counterintuitive for most of us to laugh. Suffering is, of Music Corner 6 course, not a laughing matter. To laugh at suffering is to pour salt in an open wound; to add insult to injury, so to speak. Those who suffer often feel that they will never know joy or hap‐ Mission 6 piness or laughter again; so, in my mind, laughter can only be good medicine if it comes as a sheer gift of grace. A cheerful heart arises from serendipitous moments of laughter that al‐ August 2013 Calendar 7 lude to the healing and hope one has lost and may be found again despite the immense pain and despair. 2013-2014 Session and 8 Deacons In some church traditions, the Sunday following Easter is celebrated as “Holy Humor Sunday.” People gather for worship and have the opportunity to tell their favorite jokes, play innocent pranks on the pastor, sing uplifting and joyful hymns, and basically “laugh” at the defeat of sin and evil through Christ’s resurrection. Laughter has to be a tough medicine to take when one is caught in the web of immense suf‐ fering and emotional pain; but if it comes unexpectedly and unprescribed, it may be a sign that healing and hope lie not too far in the distant future. Laughter may be a redemptive and powerful witness to God’s vulnerability displayed in Christ’s suffering for us and with us; and, of our resurrection through him (cf. Phil. 3:10‐11, NIV). The Psalmist, who so often expressed the deep pain of lament, also wrote of the hope that one day joy would return. In Psalm 30:5 we read, “Weeping may tarry for a night, but joy comes with the morning.” (ESV) Please remember to I’m grateful for that serendipitous moment of overhearing my neighbors and for the sheer gift sign-up for of laughter that came so unexpectedly to lighten the load of some quite challenging and seri‐ flowers on the ous study. Now I’m off to get some DVD’s of some of my favorite comedies—and, “Grumpy “Flower Calendar” Old Men” tops the list. throughout the year. LMR 03 - Week 17 To the Victor Go the Spoilers The end of a long regular season included some surprise endings for several clubs. Several non- playoff teams came back to bite the hands of playoff and potential playoff teams. The featured upsets were the Vikes-Cards, Browns-Bengals, Lions-Lambs, and Dallas-New Orleans matchups. Many of these teams were 4-11 or worse, and played the role of spoiler with gusto. In the case of the Browns-Bengals, it was merely the re-establishment of karma. As a result, Seattle and the Packers back into the playoffs, while Dallas must now have Carolina on its mind. The Cheeseheads have established themselves as "the team no one wants to face" in the NFC, while Baltimore is their counterpart in the AFC. The front runners remain New England and Philly with the tragic loss by St. Louis to a Detroit team that had everyone chuckling most of the year. At any rate, here's how the Look Man saw Week 17 of 2003 NFL season: Saturday Games: Buffalo @ New England: The Bills wanted to dominate the AFC Least winning Chowds to prove the 31-0 thrashing in Game One was no fluke. The storyline was a reversal of fortunes that saw the Bills in the basement and the Chowds riding a double digit win streak. The result was a punishing 31-0 Chowds win featuring 4 TD passes by QB Tom Greg Brady. Greg needs to get his picture updated, as he looks like Alfalfa from the Little Rascals in the NFL league photo below: Seattle @ Frisco: The Niners looked sharp and the Shehawks hadn't won on the road since the Truman Administration, making this game look like a battle.

Van Otterloo: "Keep the Quarterback White"! 1 Abstract Despite the prominence of professional football in U.S. culture, little research has been conducted examining the social construction of race in the game. People have a cultural perception of race; what effect does this perception have on the players? There has been research on the historical struggles of Black athletes in collegiate football, as well as lasting issues of racism. To add to this body of literature, this analysis will focus on the institutional racism embedded in the drafting practices of quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL). This paper finds that institutional racism has a lasting effect on the hiring of Black quarterbacks in the NFL.

CHAD’S A FAKER! New York Jets quarterback CHAD PENNINGTON posted a 8-4 (.667) record in his first season as the team’s starting QB last season, leading the Jets to their second division title and a playoff victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Pennington led the NFL with a 104.2 passer rating and completed 68.9 percent of his passes, tops in the league. PAUL HACKETT, the Jets offensive coordinator, attributes a lot of Pennington’s success to his play-faking ability. In fact, Hackett calls Pennington the best play-faking quarterback in the league. Hackett on why Pennington is such a good faker: 1. In order to be successful, you have to study yourself in the running game so you know what you look like when you hand it off. That is where Chad is masterful. He looks at himself in the running game so it will look exactly the same. 2. Fake with the ball, not with your hands. 3. Chad is a natural at performing the play-fake. He’s at a very sophisticated level. 4. You have to like it. That’s important. You have to be fascinated with it. You have to think, “This is a big deal, a fun thing.” Then you have a chance. Chad does that. He has fun. 5. You’ve got to have a quarterback who understands that when he does hand the ball off, he must act like he still has the ball. You have to carry out every fake. Chad is great at this. 6. Don’t over-exaggerate the fake.

  • The Performance of Betting Lines for Predicting the Outcome of NFL Games
The Performance of Betting Lines for Predicting the Outcome of NFL Games Greg Szalkowski and Michael L. Nelson Old Dominion University, Department of Computer Science Norfolk, VA 23529 Abstract. We investigated the performance of the collective intelligence of NFL fans predicting the outcome of games as realized through the Vegas betting lines. Using data from 2560 games (all post-expansion, regular- and post-season games from 2002-2011), we investigated the opening and closing lines, and the margin of victory. We found that the line difference (the difference between the opening and closing line) could be used to retroactively predict divisional winners with no less accuracy than 75% accuracy (i.e., \straight up" predictions). We also found that although home teams only beat the spread 47% of the time, a strategy of betting the home team underdogs (from 2002-2011) would have produced a cumulative winning strategy of 53.5%, above the threshold of 52.38% needed to break even. 1 Introduction Week one of the 2007 National Football League (NFL) season had the New England Patriots on the road against the New York Jets. The sportscasters had been talking about how the Jets were looking good this year and were ready for payback from the previous year when New England beat them in the playoffs. While New England had performed well in the preseason games, they had two starters out with injuries and Randy Moss was questionable for the week one game. The future was looking grim for the Patriots and Vegas was favoring the Jets at home by 6 points.

Milstein* The Maurice Clarett (“Clarett”) story is emblematic of what is wrong with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (“NCAA”) arbitrary and unjust enforcement process. It demonstrates how a life that held such promise was laid to waste by the NCAA’s unholy alliance with the National Football League (“NFL”)—a league that keeps young men toiling at grave risk and for no pay in a plantation system known as college football. It is also a personal story about a case that should have been won, but whose loss keeps getting me invited to symposiums like this. To quote Bob Dylan: “[T]here is no success like failure, and that failure is no success at all.”1 Maurice Clarett was born in Youngstown, Ohio, where he attended Warren G.

  • A Statistical Rating for NFL Kickers Honors
A Statistical Rating for NFL Kickers Honors Thesis (Honors 499) By Bobby Stone Thesis Advisor Dr. Dale Umbach Ball State University Muncie, Indiana May 2004 Graduation Date: May 8, 2004 Abstract - In the National Football League, the only position player that currently has a rating that evaluates his performance during the game and season is the quarterback. But, why does the kicker not have a rating? This thesis project develops four basic rating systems and an entire statistical fonnula to evaluate the kicker's performance during the course of a season. Some of the statistics that will be explored in this project is field goal percentage from certain distances, point-after-touchdown (PAT) conversions, the number offield goals made, average distance offield goal makes, misses and attempts. The statistical formula has six components, but it also has four additional factors that can be added onto the formula if one so chooses. These four factors are attempting field goals at home or on the road, on grass or on turf, which quarter was the field goal attempted in and outdoors or in a dome. Also, each kicker's total is found for this past season (2003). Acknowledgments - I would like to thank my thesis advisor Dr. Dale Umbach for jumpstarting me with the idea of creating such a statistical rating. I would like to thank my parents, Bob and Janis, for their ttemendous help throughout this interesting experience and helping me get through some of the frustrations this project caused me at times. I also would like to thank Mrs. Jan Wamer and the rest of the staff and students at Hartford City Middle School, where I student taught, for their help and special motivation for me to keep on task during this last semester.
