EVERYONE wants to know what they should buy when it comes to cameras, lights, microphones and the lot for video work. This is a nice system you can put together for about $3,500 that gives you EVERYTHING you need for a professional production. It’s easy to set up, easy to use and very compact.

While it may seem overwhelming at first, there are actually only a few components that you will need to start creating video or audio podcasts.

Canon products are nice cameras for the money. Most have an input for an external microphone and you get a nice wide angle lens in most cameras.

I’ve said before “You cannot shoot quality video with an internal microphone.” While I still very much prefer the options of Lavaliere, Shotgun, or Dynamic microphones, the latest generation of Canon has much higher quality audio than past models. You can shoot decent video with an internal mic, but you are better off using an external one!

For Video podcast we would add a Camera of some type as well as Video Editing Software. A video camera should allow you to preview the shot in a viewfinder, or on a computer display, so that you can be sure that you are only filming what you intend. Video editing software will allow cutting of recorded video to either remove uninteresting portions, rearrange shots into a better series, or to clean up any unintended images before releasing the video or podcast.

Phone as camcorder: Although there are benefits to using a video camera, the latest generation of smartphones, both iPhones and Android, have reached a level of quality that is indistinguishable for most viewers from professional and much more expensive gear.

The only thing to keep in mind is audio quality - I still recommend you get a connection cable so you can hook up a high-quality external microphone to get the best audio.

If you’d like to watch a video that demonstrates the difference between an iPhone 5s and a $4,000 video camera with a $1,000 lens, go here. http://www.redmondpie.com/camera-test-iphone-5-vs- canon-5d-mark-iii-professional-dslr-images/

SD Flash camcorders: Almost all modern camcorders use either Internal, or SD Card flash. You can swap a cheap SD card out of the camera, dump video from it, put a new one in and keep shooting. It is much faster to copy data off a SD card than hard disk. Cost of SD cards has come down to where a 64GB card (several hours of video at max quality) is now around $55. Of course you can use this card over and over hundreds of times making the cost very cheap indeed.

Get a couple SDHC flash memory cards – they’re cheap and removable. You can swap out a flash card, pop in a new one and record HOURS of content without having to hook up the camcorder to your computer via USB and WAIT. Plus you can copy video from a card while shooting on a new card.

SDI output camcorders: When doing any kind of live streaming, or using a video switcher for either live switching or broadcast, you will need an SDI signal from the camera. Generally only high end cameras have native SDI onboard. Luckily even cheap consumer camcorders can output SDI using an HDMI to SDI converter. These are not cheap at about $250 a piece, but they do allow the use of cheap coax cables of long lengths to run from the camera to a remote switch.

WiFi Control camcorders: WiFi is everywhere, and many manufacturers, including Canon, are using WiFi in their camcorders to allow some degree of control (zoom, start stop recording, and even moving the camera angle) depending on type. Generally an iPhone of iPad app will control the camera, making remote changes possible without standing next to the camcorder.

While the cost of doing a video and audio podcast may be as cheap as the cost of your smartphone, there is many functionality gained when additional and more specialized equipment is added to the mix. Podcast equipment setups can be broken down into three general categories - Basic, High Quality, and Professional Quality. Keeping in mind the list of necessary equipment, we can look at each category and pick equipment that best fits the desired results and budget!

Streaming Tools: • Apple MainStage (Mac) Can I use my iPhone? • Nicecast (Mac) Yes - the most basic podcasting can be done with an iPhone. Location Recording

For location recording you will need some sort of portable microphone (Lavaliere, Shotgun, etc. - see next page) feeding audio either to a camcorder or a separate digital audio recorder such as the TASCAM DR-40 4-Track Portable Digital Recorder.

http://0s4.com/r/TASCAM

This portable recorder can record XLR microphones, mini 1/8 input shotgun microphones, as well as use its own on board microphones.

Once back in studio or at home, the audio tracks can get edited, refined and merged as needed with Audacity.

Studio/Home Recording

For studio or home recording, you will want to use good quality XLR or USB microphones (see next page) and mic your subject individually. The XLR microphones should go to a USB mixer such as the Behringer Xenyx Q802USB

http://0s4.com/r/MIXER

For a higher quality setup a digital mixer such as the MOTU Track16 can be used. This mixer replaces physical knobs with software (or iPad) control while providing the highest quality sound for XLR microphones.

http://0s4.com/r/MOTU

Mixers can feed audio directly into Audacity where tracks can get edited, refined and merged as needed.

45 watt fluorescent light bulb = 200 watt Incandescent light bulbs each with a day light balanced color temperature of 5000K. The total output for the main lights is 2000 Watt. These high-output daylight balanced compact fluorescent bulbs are ideally suited for digital photography. They also have very low heat so they don’t get hot like the more common photo bulb choices.

LED lights off significantly further “throw” than a comparable fluorescent light. This is because each of the 500 LED lights has a 60 degree beam angle lens that directs light forward.

LEDs last about 10 years, and are much more durable than other lights.

©2009-2014 Mike Koenigs, All Rights Reserved 13 Good Streaming Video - one camera With free streaming services like Google Hangouts and YouTube Live, you can broadcast full high-definition programs right from any laptop computer with a webcam. This is fine to get started, but your programs are going to look and feel amateurish.

The two BIG upgrades you want to add is a real camera and microphone. With the BlackMagic Mini Recorder, you can plug in a real video camera (any listed in the recommended cameras), a professional microphone and your productions will suddenly look, feel and sound like they’re coming from a real studio!

Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder ($150)

http://0s4.com/r/BMREC

This cheap box allows a computer with a Thunderbolt port to capture HDMI or SDI video from a camera or camcorder. We use this with Wirecast as a source for live video using camcorders mentioned in this guide.

Macs with multiple Thunderbolt ports can be used to add additional Mini Recorder boxes to have more channels.

WireCast Studio for Youtube (Free)

http://www.telestream.net/wirecastforyoutube/cb- landing.htm

Wirecast released a special version that allows you to stream to YouTube Live or Google Hangouts.

The free version allows you to use 1 camera source and 1 virtual camera (desktop). The paid version adds support for more cameras and other features.

To recap, you will need the following for a Good one camera video studio

• BlackMagic Mini Recorder • Camcorder - any with HDMI out • Tripod • Lights • Microphone - I recommend using a USB microphone like the Blue Yeti to keep things simple and cheap) • Wirecast software - the free version will work fine • A computer equipped with a “ThunderBolt” connector. If you use a PC, you’ll want to get the USB 3.0 version of the Mini Recorder, or better yet get a Mac!

©2009-2014 Mike Koenigs, All Rights Reserved 14 Better Streaming Video - switch up to four cameras This all-in-one -in-a-studio will let you carry a complete studio in a box. Connect your cameras, computer and you’re able to produce an entire live “switched” event, broadcast or record it for less than $10,000. A few years ago, this technology would have cost $100,000 or more!

It’s easy to learn and use and with it, I’m able to take an entire 3-4 camera production studio on the road in a small suitcase and two duffel bags.

You will need the following for a Better multi-camera video studio

• LiveStream Studio ($7,000+ depending on portability, features and connections) http://new. livestream.com/studio • AJA HDMI->SDI converter to connect your camera to the device (one per camera or per computer) http://www.amazon.com/AJA-HA5-HD-SDI-Video- Converter/dp/B0030D425S • Tripods • Microphones • Lights • SDI Cables

This system comes with very powerful software that will allow you to do all the production quickly and easily. You an optionally install the Wirecast software ($200-$1,000) depending on features and capabilities) to take advantage of being able to switch multiple computers on a wireless network.

The software allows you to broadcast you program to Google Hangouts, YouTube Live, LiveStream, UStream and even more services.

The reason I’m recommending this solution is because it’s pre-built, tested and works out of the box. If you choose to build your own system, you could spent a week or two putting it together, getting it to work, testing and still find out something doesn’t behave. My opinion is to let the professionals figure it out and make money producing shows for yourself or others.

Note that this is a Windows-based system, not a Mac. There currently isn’t a portable Mac solution with all the hardware in one single “box” like this. The system is stable, easy to use and powerful.

There are alternative systems that can produce the same or similar results including the Tricaster http:// www.newtek.com/products/tricaster-8000.html and ready-made Wirecast production machines at http://www. telestream.net/wirecast/matrox-vs4.htm.

One element you might not have seen before is the HDMI->SDI converter. Low-cost consumer cameras use mini-HDMI ports. They’re very delicate and break easily so the converter is used to use SDI cables which can be 100 feet or longer and are extremely durable. Professional cameras have SDI ports built-in, but they typically start at $2,000 or more. A $500 Canon camera with this converter can honestly look as good as a $5,000 prosumer camera.

Note: I do not recommend the BlackMagic Design HDMI->SDI converters because they do not consistently work with Canon cameras or computers.

©2009-2014 Mike Koenigs, All Rights Reserved 15 Best Streaming Video - switch four+ cameras We have just upgraded to the Newtek Tricaster system in our own studio. They cost more money but they produce excellent results and allow you to create high-quality live productions that rival any .

My #1 piece of advice if going for a high end system is to work with a dealer and have them help you configure and set up a system. I’ve wasted hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars of money doing everything myself. Although I admit it was a great investment of LEARNING, it didn’t make me any money! :)

Apple Macbook Pro 13 Retina ($1499)

http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/

While it is possible to do streaming video on a PC, it is much easier on a Mac. We recommend the Macbook Pro 13 as the cheapest Mac for streaming video. Higher end models like the Macbook Pro 15 Retina or an iMac will offer faster processing, the portability or the Macbook Pro 13 is a big benefit.

You will need the following for a Best multi-camera video studio

• BlackMagic Design Television Studio or ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher with BlackMagic Mini Recorder • AJA HDMI->SDI converter to connect your camera to the device (one per camera or per computer) http://www.amazon.com/AJA-HA5-HD-SDI-Video-Converter/dp/B0030D425S • Two monitors (you can get great 19”-23” monitors for $120 each) • Tripods • Microphones • Lights • SDI Cables

A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen with audio narration. For people afraid of being on camera, it’s a fast, cheap and convenient way to make videos. Teleprompter Software Options:

MAC: Presentation Prompter PC: uPrompt iPad: TelePrompt+ http://0s4.com/r/TELE

Although it’s not critical or absolutely necessary, I’m a big fan of teleprompters. With one, you can look at your camera directly and either read your script OR look directly at your presentation AND the camera.

The biggest thing you want is a prompter that has “automatic reversing” or “reversing display” so you can just connect your computer to the device and it will “flip” the display and appear without any software. Here’s the company I use: http://PrompterPeople.com/

Here’s a small one (pictured above) - for $1,149 and it automatically reverses your screen: http://PrompterPeople.com/flex_11-11ENG.php

Larger 15” and 17” (I’d get the 17”) are going to be $1,300-$1,500. If you get ANY other model, you will need to buy a VGA Reverser Box which costs $395. http://PrompterPeople.com/accessories.php

For all location shooting and increasingly, in the studio, I’m using my iPad. With the addition of an “iKlip” for $40, I can clip the iPad to my camera tripod and present like a professional. I love the Teleprompt+ software because it’s cheap and can be controlled remotely from an iPhone.

With some additional, affordable hardware, you can transform any iPad into a “real” teleprompter and mount it directly in front of your camera. If you want to do a “walking shot” and not forget your lines, this is a really simple solution - your cameraman just walks with the camera, you start the teleprompter rolling, read your lines and you come across like a total pro!

Here’s a fantastic place for finding great teleprompter hardware that’s affordable and flexible:

©2009-2014 Mike Koenigs, All Rights Reserved 18 ! Bonus Item: Makeup

Studio Makeup:

As used in my studio - Standard Powder Kit 12 by Mehron

The big secret of professionals in front of the camera is judicious use of makeup!

You should see me without makeup on - my skin is pasty white and my forehead and nose reflect light like they were mirrors. Luckily I’m not the only one who needs a little help to look good in front of the camera! Stage makeup is readily available and has been used by stage and TV professionals for years.

No one wants to see a reflection of lights off the forehead or nose, and powder makeup will work well to reduce of completely remove the glare.

Start with a bib towel to protect your clothes then use a powder like the standard range of colors in the Mehron powder kit that we use on the set. If you’re a guy, make sure you shave first! Use a powder brush to cover up all the shinny skin areas - checking the camera or a mirror to be sure you apply the powder evenly and not too thick. If your skin is oily, you can use oil absorbing sheets to first dab the oil off your skin. The forehead and nose are going to be the most common areas to cover. For more troubling spots like moles and blemishes, you can use a concealer.

If your hair isn’t as thick as you like, or you are showing some skin though your hair, you can use a spray like Toppik to thicken your hair and, at least as far as the camera is concerned, reduce any bald spots.
