Specific objectives that teachers are required to teach in science and mathematics are identified and applicable resources are listed. Special attention is paid to use of minority role models whenever possible. Alternative careers for women in science and mathematics are emphasized as well. The newsletter editor acts as a community resource and links teachers and businesses. Through the newsletter, the resource bank encourages teachers and students to look outside the classroom and encourages the business community to become involved in its schuols. Documents used in the project comprise a large portion of this report. These include brochures, forms, rlorrespondence, media articles, and two volumes of the newsletter. The public school system of Montgomery County, Maryland, with help from its education foundation, the Montgomery Education Connection, Inc., has established a data base of more than 1,800 volunteer business and community resources in the areas of science arid mathematics who are willing to share their expertise with students and teachers in its 154 schools. Through this grant, a monthly newsletter that lughlights this sharing is being published. More than 7,500 copies are distributed each month to teachers, schuol administrators and career specialists. Newsletter articles about teachers' use of business and community experts as speakers in the classroom or mentors for students make all teachers aware of the resources available. Specific objectives that teachers are required to teach in science and mathematics are identified and applicable resources are listed. INTRODUCTION How can business communities and school systems interact to the benefit of both? This document is a step-by-step non-technical explanation of how to establish and maintain a connection between the business community and the school system of a large suburban county. The mechanism for this relationship is composed of two interrelated parts. The first part is the Connection Resoune Bank, a computerized data base of more than 1,800 experts in science and mathematics from the business community, who have volunteered to visit schools and share what they know with teachers and students. The second part is "Of Interest," a newsletter funded by this grant, published by the school system and distributed to all 7,000 teachers monthly to Iet them know the programs the Bank is providing to enrich and expand the curriculum. What is the Connection Resource Bank? A group of high-level business executives in the county establisheda broad-based foundation in 1984 to stimulate involvement of business and other community members in enhancing the counties educational program. The foundation's first projectwas establishing a computerized bank of resources to enrich the secondary math and science curricula. A computerized data base of volunteer experts was established to accomplish this goal. Software to manage the data base was developed by businesses working closely with school system curriculum coordinators and school resource teachers. The data base grew from 300resources to more than 1,800 in two years. How can teachers use the Resource Bank? Teachers can use the data base by telephoning the bank coordinator and communicating a need. "I needa mentor to help a student study how the salinity of water affects the reproduction of crustacea." "I'd like a paramedic to speak to the class about emergency medicine on January 21 at 1:15." The coordinator accesses the data base, finds and contacts the appropriate resource, and arranges for the program or mentoring to take place on the date and at the time the teacher requested. Letters of confirmation are sent by the coordinator to both teacher and resource, including phone numbers so the two may speak further. A letter of confirmation is sent to the teacher, along with a speaker evaluation

Thanks to 55 Oversight Board community partners at 60 MCPS elementary schools, Manna’s Smart Sacks Past Chair: Nancy Williams program supported the academic achievement of more than 2,490 students Vice President through good nutrition and “Smart Sacks Food Facts.” Around the County we DecisionPath Consulting conducted 94 classes to share skills for shopping and cooking on a budget.     THEJOURNEY Our Lady of Peace H E R OVOLUME 11 - 2020 E S PAGE 3 PAGE 5 PAGE 10 HOW THE LITTLE FREE HOSPICE ENDURED THE STORM This is the story of a public health crisis that converged with an economic crisis and how a little hospice in St. Paul withstood the crosswinds. This is the story of Our Lady of Peace Home in 2020. As increasingly dire information about the coronavirus emerged in early March, the staff of Our Lady of Peace rallied. It became clear that life was about to change in unimaginable ways. The pandemic cast Our Lady’s mission in a new, more urgent light: “Called by God, Our Lady of Peace gently comforts and cares for those most in need near the end of their lives, wherever they call home, regardless of means.” Soon that comfort and care would involve Facetiming quarantined relatives, managing a shortage of personal protective equipment and, in an unprecedented move, closing the hospice to outside visitors. The medical staff faced a formidable learning curve. “Staff rose to the challenge on infection control,” said Dr. Michael Pinchback, chief medical officer. “We all had the foundation of this knowledge prior to this, but this pandemic has made everyone employed here an expert.” From administrators to receptionists, the entire staff united in its effort to implement the best practices on infection control. It reinforced Our Lady’s longstanding emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene. The size of the hospice and the dedication of the staff allow patients to receive a level of care that standard hospitals simply cannot deliver, said longtime nurse Frezgi Hiskias.

Gillings Center for Dramatic Art | playmakersrep.org | 919.962.7529 VIVIENNE BENESCH PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends, As a Next Level Artist supported by the U.S. Department of State, Kane Smego has spent the past four years traveling to Zimbabwe, Thailand, Brazil, and Morocco to promote understanding and conflict resolution through hip hop, and to support the professional development of artists in those communities. As a theatre artist, Kane is an heir to Shakespeare, Molière, and Lope de Vega—and I’m not exaggerating. Kane’s extraordinary gift is to bend, turn, twist, and massage words in ways that make them feel entirely new again, and to arrange them into sentences, stanzas, images, and metaphors that drop our jaws and leave us panting to keep up. As both creator and citizen, Kane is a living embodiment of how art can make a tangible difference in people’s lives. What a lucky stroke it is, then, to have him return to his home turf and kick off our 2018/19 season: Shifting Ground: Theatre that Moves. Kane comes to us through our friend and frequent collaborator, Joseph Megel. Through Joseph’s acclaimed UNC program, The Process Series, Kane found an artistic home back on the campus where he honed his craft as an ungraduate student. We’re thrilled to offer Joseph and Kane an opportunity to deepen their collaborative rapport, and to further amplify this international touring artist’s local impact. For this production, building upon PRC2’s ongoing “Act Two” of post-show conversation, we’ve curated a series we’re calling “Pass the Mic.” Several audiences will get to meet a veritable Who’s Who of poetic talent from the Triangle and witness the breadth of the form.
