Cory Radtke CVFX: Legacy Effects Impact of Motion Control And CG Imaging In Cinema “It’s easy to create something that has a lot of luster, but it’s very hard to make something that has a lot of depth.” These words, from John Dykstra – a motion control pioneer – encapsulate the state of mind in the film effects industry in the late 60’s. Special effects for cinema had reached a point which at audiences required more impressive visuals that were more detailed and realistic to suspend their disbelief. The weariness had set in, in the 50’s/early 60’s because of the bombardment of super low budget B-movie action and horror films. With the established use of stop motion and optical printing techniques, effects technicians- provoked by visionary filmmakers worked to push the envelope. The content also dictated the advancements necessary to tell/show the stories. One such film that changed the industry forever was Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The production of the film gave birth to motion control and and slit-scan photography, pushed by a visionary and a vision - “Do it right, do it better then do it all over again”(Costa 5). Kubrick helped open the door to following decades of visual marvels that have since become staples in motion picture effects work. Innovation after innovation, the technical achievements pushed forward by motion-control - soon after included: Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Superman, and Blade Runner. (Edwards 2-9). As 2001 opened the door to motion-control, subsequent films – most notably Star Wars adapted and advanced the technology with the minds at the newly created ILM, by George Lucas. -

But despite Crane’s pervasive ironies and his successful refutation of genteel literary treatments of warfare, The Red Badge can nonetheless be read as endorsing battle as a ticket to manhood and self-confidence. Not so the First World War verse of Lieutenant Wilfred Owen. Owen’s antiheroic, almost revolutionary poems introduced an enduring new archetype: the young soldier as a guileless victim, meaninglessly sacrificed to the vanity of civilians and politicians. Written, though not published during the war, Owen’s “Strange Meeting,” “The Parable of the Old Man and the Young,” and “Anthem for Doomed Youth,” especially, exemplify his judgment. Owen, a decorated officer who once described himself as a “pacifist with a very seared conscience,” portrays soldiers as young, helpless, innocent, and ill- starred. On the German side, the same theme pervades novelist Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1928): Lewis Milestone’s film adaptation (1930) is often ranked among the best war movies of all time. Unlike Crane, neither Owen nor Remarque detected in warfare any redeeming value; and by the late twentieth century, general revulsion of the educated against war solicited a wide acceptance of this sympathetic image among Western War, Literature & the Arts: an international journal of the humanities / Volume 32 / 2020 civilians—incomplete and sentimental as it is. -

Harvey and Perry alone could probably start their own TV network with all the content they produce. The former, 63, is an omnipresent face on the small screen, hosting “Showtime at the Apollo,” “Celebrity Family Feud” and the Miss Universe competition. As for Perry, he has shows running on BET, Netflix, OWN, Nickelodeon and more. Both also have rags to riches back stories, having been homeless and, at times, laving lived in their cars before making it big in entertainment. Perry sold the unabashedly opulent 35,000-square-foot behemoth in 2016 for $17.5 million, after having had it on the market for almost two years with an unrealistic initial asking price of $25 million. Despite the multimillion-dollar difference between the original asking price and the recorded sale price, the property nonetheless made real estate waves as the most expensive residential sale in Atlanta history. It’s worth taking a gulp of air before reading through the plethora of features in the 7-bed, 9.5-bath spread. First, there’s the setting: 17 acres of manicured lawns bordered by trimmed gardens, a 70,000-gallon infinity-edged swimming pool, a lighted tennis court, fully equipped gym and separate spa. -

New zealand movies 2016 Continue In the early 1990s, the British Film Institute launched the Century of Cinema Series in an attempt to explore various examples of national cinemas around the world. The film, written and directed by Kiwi actor Sam Neill, has been a contributor to the project. Although his attitude to this topic has gradually changed, Sam Neill concluded in his documentary that the New zealand films are predominantly dark and brooding. This particular era of filmmaking began in the mid-1970s with the rise of the New Wave in cinema. Here, the themes that defined the way the New ealand public viewed themselves on screen put enormous creative pressure on local filmmakers. Since then, the national cinema of New york has experienced a number of unstable stages. Over the years, one of the greatest obstacles that the filmmakers of New York have had to overcome has been the high poppy syndrome of Kiwi culture. Local audiences have been impressed by the talents and creativity of their country's artists, so very few Kiwis will sit and watch New york made productions. National pride for the country's film industry has blossomed recently. Below is a list of the top ten examples of national cinema in New York. It is important to note that despite a key role in the creation of the influential film industry in New York, peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series were not included in this book. Instead, the films selected for the list are those that demonstrate the key characteristics of the country's culture. -

Review of The Bloomsbury Companions to Contemporary Film-makers: Peter Jackson Alfio Leotta’s new book aims to analyse Peter Jackson as “auteur”, his double status of New Zealand and global filmmaker, and how his work has contributed to put his homeland on the map. This promising premise is marred by an unsatisfactory, fragmentary structure, which gives the impression that the book was completed hastily. It has four chapters, followed by a dictionary-like mishmash (“A-Z Films/ Themes/ Key Concepts”). Some sentences appear twice. Leotta introduces people and films (i.e. Andy Serkis, the mockumentary Forgotten Silver), apparently forgetting they had a whole section devoted to them previously in the book. In contrast to the excessive times he repeats personal details (i.e. the fact that Costa Botes introduced Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh), some information relevant to the discussion (i.e. the production companies owned by Jackson) is sparsely mentioned. -
