235 Shrimp fishing in Mexico Based on the work of D. Aguilar and J. Grande-Vidal AN OVERVIEW Mexico has coastlines of 8 475 km along the Pacific and 3 294 km along the Atlantic Oceans. Shrimp fishing in Mexico takes place in the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, both by artisanal and industrial fleets. A large number of small fishing vessels use many types of gear to catch shrimp. The larger offshore shrimp vessels, numbering about 2 212, trawl using either two nets (Pacific side) or four nets (Atlantic). In 2003, shrimp production in Mexico of 123 905 tonnes came from three sources: 21.26 percent from artisanal fisheries, 28.41 percent from industrial fisheries and 50.33 percent from aquaculture activities. Shrimp is the most important fishery commodity produced in Mexico in terms of value, exports and employment. Catches of Mexican Pacific shrimp appear to have reached their maximum. There is general recognition that overcapacity is a problem in the various shrimp fleets. DEVELOPMENT AND STRUCTURE Although trawling for shrimp started in the late 1920s, shrimp has been captured in inshore areas since pre-Columbian times. Magallón-Barajas (1987) describes the lagoon shrimp fishery, developed in the pre-Hispanic era by natives of the southeastern Gulf of California, which used barriers built with mangrove sticks across the channels and mouths of estuaries and lagoons. The National Fisheries Institute (INP, 2000) and Magallón-Barajas (1987) reviewed the history of shrimp fishing on the Pacific coast of Mexico. It began in 1921 at Guaymas with two United States boats. -

Greenland fishes this stock in Subarea 1, Canada in Div. 0A. The species is assessed in these waters as a single stock and managed by catch control. The fishery has been prosecuted over time by four fleets: Greenland small-vessel inshore; Greenland KGH offshore; Greenland recent offshore, and Canadian offshore. Catch peaked in 1992 at 105 000 tons but then decreased to around 80 000 tons by 1998 owing to management measures. Increases in allowed takes were subsequently accompanied by increased catches. The logbook recorded catches in 2005 and 2006, around 157 000 tons, were the highest recorded. Since then catches has decreased to a recent low level in 2015 at 72 256 tons. In the following years, both TACs and catches increased, and the total catches was 94 878 tons in 2018. The enacted TAC for Greenland in 2019 is set at 103 383 tons and a TAC of 1 617 tons were set for Canada, by the Greenland Self-government. The projected catch for 2019 is set at 100 000 tons. -
Shrimp: Wildlife Notebook Series
Shrimp Five species of pandalid shrimp of various commercial and subsistence values are found in the cool waters off the coast of Alaska. Pink shrimp (Pandalus borealis) are the foundation of the commercial trawl shrimp fishery in Alaska. Pinks are circumpolar in distribution, though greatest concentrations occur in the Gulf of Alaska. Ranging from Puget Sound to the Arctic coast of Alaska, the humpy shrimp (P. goniurus) is usually harvested incidentally to pink shrimp. In some cases, however, the humpy constitutes the primary species caught. Both pink and humpy shrimp are usually marketed as cocktail or salad shrimp. Known for its sweet flavor, the sidestripe shrimp (Pandalopsis dispar) is also caught incidentally to pinks; however, there are small trawl fisheries in Prince William Sound and Southeast Alaska which target on this deeper water species. The coonstripe shrimp (Pandalus hypsinotis) is the prized target of various pot shrimp fisheries around the state. Coonstripe shrimp can be found from the Bering Sea to the Strait of Juan de Fuca while sidestripes range from the Bering Sea to Oregon. Spot shrimp (P. platyceros) is the largest shrimp in the North Pacific. Ranging from Unalaska Island to San Diego, this species is highly valued by commercial pot fishers and subsistence users alike. Most of the catch from the sidestripe, coonstripe, and spot fisheries is sold fresh in both local and foreign markets. General description: Pandalid shrimp can be characterized by a long, well-developed spiny rostrum and are medium to large in size. The body is generally slender and there are five pairs of "swimmerets" located on the underside of the abdomen. -

Cypris settled predominantly on the carapace (67%), mostly on the gastric area (40%), on the left or right orbital areas (35%), on the head appendages, and on the pereiopods 1–3. Encrusting individuals were mostly small (84%); medium-sized specimens accounted for 11% and large for 5%. On the cephalothorax, most were observed in branchial (661) and orbital areas (240). Only 40–41 individuals were found on gastric and cardiac areas. Some individuals (246), mostly small (95%), were observed on the dorsal portion of somites. -

Spiny Lobster and Prawn (Shrimp) Regulations, 1973 Article 1. - These regulations may be cited as the Spiny Lobster and Prawn (Shrimp) Regulations, 1973. Article 2. - No person shall fish for, take, or land from any vessel any spiny lobster the carapace length of which is less than eight centimetres (3.15 inches) or the tail length of which is less than eleven and one half centimetres (4.50 inches). Article 3. - No person shall purchase or have in his possession any spiny lobster the carapace length of which is less than eight centimetres (3.15 inches) or the tail length of which is less than eleven and one half centimetres (4...50 inches). Article 4. - (1) No person shall fish for, or take any spiny lobster that is in the soft-shell stage. (2) No person shall sell, purchase or have in his possession any spiny lobster which is in the soft-shell stage. Article 5. - No person shall land from any vessel or sell or have in his possession any spiny lobster tail which: (a) is in such a condition that it cannot be measured; or (b) has the calcified bar of the tergum of the first abdominal segment fractured. ASC SHRIMP STANDARD REVISION Revision of Current Metrics Background Analysis Document March 2020 Revision of current metrics – Background analysis document Shrimp Standard Revision Purpose The purpose of this document is to present the acquired data for the revision of the ASC Shrimp Standard v.1.1 and propose changes to the metric requirements where relevant. This document will be used for the decision-making process within the revision. Background The ASC Shrimp Standard v.1.1 is based on the anterior work of the Shrimp Aquaculture Dialogue (ShAD) and sets requirements that define what has been deemed ‘acceptable’ levels as regards the major social and environmental impacts of saltwater shrimp farming. The purpose of the ASC Shrimp Standard was and is to provide means to measurably improve the environmental and social performance of shrimp aquaculture operations worldwide. The Standard currently covers species under the genus Penaeus (previously Litopenaeus)1 and is oriented towards the production of P. vannamei2 and P. monodon. A Rationale document3 was produced as part of the ASC Shrimp Standard revision to evaluate the necessity to specifically include Penaeus stylirostris (Blue Shrimp), Penaeus merguiensis (Banana Prawn), Penaeus japonicus (Kuruma Prawn) and Penaeus ensis (Greasyback Shrimp) within the ASC Shrimp Standard. It was concluded that specific metrics for these species are not necessary and certification can remain on the basis of the metrics already contained therein for P. vannamei and P. monodon. Corresponding Metrics The ASC Shrimp Standard covers seven principles regarding legal regulations, environmentally suitable sighting and operation, community interactions, responsible operation practices, shrimp health management, stock management and resources use. -

The leading shrimp producers are in the Asia-Pacific region while the major markets are in Japan, the U.S.A. and Europe. The dramatic failures of shrimp farms in Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and China within the last five years have raised concerns about the sustainability of shrimp aquaculture, in particular intensive farming. After a brief background on shrimp farming, this paper reviews its environmental impacts and recommends measures that can be undertaken on the farm, 1 country and regional levels to promote long-term sustainability of the industry. Among the environmental effects of shrimp culture are the loss of mangrove goods and services as a result of conversion, salinization of soil and water, discharge of effluents resulting in pollution of the pond system itself and receiving waters, and overuse or misuse of chemicals. Recommendations include the protection and restoration of mangrove habitats and wild shrimp stocks, management of pond effluents, regulation of chemical use and species introductions, and an integrated coastal area management approach. -

Of them, the bathypelagic P. exilimanus is new to the Japanese fauna. The other three species are abyssobenthic, extending to depths greater than 3000 m, and thus have been rarely collected. The newly collected samples of H. gracialis enable us to reassess diagnostic characters of the species. Nematocarcinus longirostris is rediscovered since the original description, and the taxonomy of the species is reviewed. Glyphocrangon caecescens is the sole representative of the family extending to off northern Japan.
