    Shrimp Five species of pandalid shrimp of various commercial and subsistence values are found in the cool waters off the coast of Alaska. Pink shrimp (Pandalus borealis) are the foundation of the commercial trawl shrimp fishery in Alaska. Pinks are circumpolar in distribution, though greatest concentrations occur in the Gulf of Alaska. Ranging from Puget Sound to the Arctic coast of Alaska, the humpy shrimp (P. goniurus) is usually harvested incidentally to pink shrimp. In some cases, however, the humpy constitutes the primary species caught. Both pink and humpy shrimp are usually marketed as cocktail or salad shrimp. Known for its sweet flavor, the sidestripe shrimp (Pandalopsis dispar) is also caught incidentally to pinks; however, there are small trawl fisheries in Prince William Sound and Southeast Alaska which target on this deeper water species. The coonstripe shrimp (Pandalus hypsinotis) is the prized target of various pot shrimp fisheries around the state. Coonstripe shrimp can be found from the Bering Sea to the Strait of Juan de Fuca while sidestripes range from the Bering Sea to Oregon. Spot shrimp (P. platyceros) is the largest shrimp in the North Pacific. Ranging from Unalaska Island to San Diego, this species is highly valued by commercial pot fishers and subsistence users alike. Most of the catch from the sidestripe, coonstripe, and spot fisheries is sold fresh in both local and foreign markets. General description: Pandalid shrimp can be characterized by a long, well-developed spiny rostrum and are medium to large in size. The body is generally slender and there are five pairs of "swimmerets" located on the underside of the abdomen.

University Drive Pine Bluff, AR 71601 Abstract The effects of socio-demographic factors on consumer ratings of product attributes of an experimental canned bighead product were analyzed. OLS techniques were used to evaluate the effects of experience consuming other canned fish products, race, gender, age, and income on the taste, tex- ture, appearance, and aroma of canned bighead. A logit analysis was then used to measure the effects of these variables on binary choice variables related to preference comparisons and willingness-to-pay as much for canned bighead as for canned salmon and canned tuna. Responses between the com- parisons of canned bighead and canned salmon or canned tuna varied. In- come, region, and gender significantly affected ratings on product attributes while taste variables significantly affected consumers' willingness-to-pay as much for canned bighead as for canned tuna. Conditional probabilities showed more clearly the effects of age, income, and gender on taste ratings, the subsequent effects of taste on preferences, and ultimately on willingness-to- pay. Probabilities estimated showed that canned bighead competes more fa- vorably with canned tuna than with canned salmon.     OCEANA/Keith Ellenbogen Atlantic Bluefin Tuna and CITES Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) has been driven to the edge of collapse by overfishing and the demand for international trade. This top predator has been traditionally harvested in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea through traditional fishing activity like tuna traps, but in recent decades an industrial fishing industry with high tech purse seine gear has been widely developed, fuelled by government subsidies. The activity of this huge fleet has focused on the main spawning areas in the Mediterranean Sea, where bluefin tuna aggregate to spawn in the spring-summer season.1 The development of this fleet has been accompanied by the development of fattening farms all along the Mediterranean coast, allowing the industry to control both the market and the fisheries. Additionally, the whole industrial activity has been characterised by high percentages of catch misreporting and illegal fishing, leading to higher levels of overfishing. In the western Atlantic Ocean, overfishing led to the adoption of a rebuilding plan in 1999, but this plan has proved unable to recover the stock, with actual catches below the agreed quotas.2 This depleted stock has not shown the needed signs of rebuilding since the plan was adopted. Despite all the clear alarms, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the organisation that brings together all of the countries responsible for managing this tuna fishery, has repeatedly ignored scientific advice and
