As the Introduction explains this thesis sets out to look at the Georgians* achievement in poetry in the light of their intentions as avowed in prose and their methods as exemplified hy their poems. This is chiefly a critical exercise hut history has heen used to clear away the inevitable distortion which results from looking at Georgian poetry after fifty years of Eliot- influenced hostility. The history of the movement is dealt with in Chapter 2. The next three chapters examine aspects of poetry which the Georgians themselves con sidered most interesting. Chapter 3 deals with form, Chapter 4 with diction and Chapter 5 with inspiration or attitude to subject matter. Chapter 6 looks at the aspect of Georgianism most commonly thought by later readers to define the movement, th a t is i t s subjects. -

However, without this essential building block, which puts his works into context, meaningful analysis and criticism of his work is difficult. This is a working document, and if you would like to help make it a definitive list, please send any amendments and additions to me at [email protected]. They will be incorporated in the list and acknowledged. The format of the checklist is chronological, in order of first publication in periodical and book form. It should be borne in mind that there is a bibliographical hierarchy: contributions to periodicals, then contributions to books, and finally principal books. -

The intention of the list is to provide those with an interest in Thomas with the tools to understand his enormous contribution to criticism as well as poetry. This is very much a work in progress. Year 10 : In the News Graphic Design Examples of poster designs • Art work that is produced to COMMUNICATE or EXPLAIN an idea, to a group of people. • Graphic designers combine words, symbols and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. Propaganda Posters • Today, propaganda is commonly thought of to be false or misleading and the term is commonly used in a derogatory way. However, during WW1 & WW2 these posters were created to spreading ideas or information to further a cause. Keep Calm and Carry On origins • A motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939 in preparation for World War II. The poster was intended to raise the morale of the British public, threatened with air attacks on major cities. Although 2.45 million copies were printed, and although the Blitz did in fact take place, the poster was only rarely publicly displayed and was little known until a copy was rediscovered in 2000 ‘In the News’ Design Brief • Many artists, designers and art movements create artwork inspired by current and relevant topics in the news. Propaganda posters from the World War were used to encourage the public to conform. Russian constructivism came after WW1 to provide structure and like the London Underground Posters to educate the public and finally Banksy and Shepard Fairy design posters and art work to raise awareness of political views. • Investigate appropriate resources and design a poster or piece of artwork that communicates a relevant topic that is in the news. Anderson August 2017 © 2017 i EGYPTIAN LABOR CORPS: LOGISTICAL LABORERS IN WORLD WAR I AND THE 1919 EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION Kyle J. Anderson, Ph. D. Cornell University 2017 This is a history of World War I in Egypt. But it does not offer a military history focused on generals and officers as they strategized in grand halls or commanded their troops in battle. Rather, this dissertation follows the Egyptian workers and peasants who provided the labor that built and maintained the vast logistical network behind the front lines of the British war machine. These migrant laborers were organized into a new institution that redefined the relationship between state and society in colonial Egypt from the beginning of World War I until the end of the 1919 Egyptian Revolution: the “Egyptian Labor Corps” (ELC). I focus on these laborers, not only to document their experiences, but also to investigate the ways in which workers and peasants in Egypt were entangled with the broader global political economy. The ELC linked Egyptian workers and peasants into the global political economy by turning them into an important source of logistical laborers for the British Empire during World War I. The changes inherent in this transformation were imposed on the Egyptian countryside, but workers and peasants also played an important role in the process by creating new political imaginaries, influencing state policy, and fashioning new and increasingly violent repertoires of contentious politics to engage with the ELC. -

A note on the origins of 1914-18 ‘war poetry’ Dominic Hibberd Biography Dominic Hibberd, was a biographer, editor and critic who taught at universities in Britain, the USA, and China. He wrote biographies of two poets, Harold Monro and Wilfred Owen, as well as the critical study Owen the Poet (1986). He edited Poetry of the First World War in the Casebook series (1981), and with John Onions, compiled and edited The Winter of the World: Poems of the First World War (2007). Abstract The sort of work that has often been thought of as typical British First World War poetry – realistic, often angry poems about the actualities of the front line, written from the point of view of the ordinary soldier and aimed at the civilian conscience – was in fact not typical at all. And it was not begun by soldiers in the aftermath of front-line horrors, as is often supposed, but by two civilian poets very early in the war. Harold Monro and Wilfrid Gibson deserve to be recognised as the first of what modern readers would call the ‘war poets’. Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date > '77/ While English First World War poetry moved from extolling the Vic• torian versions of chivalric values to the "debunking" realism of some of the soldier poets, Canadian First World War poetry failed to exhibit any such development. Canadian First World War poets write a colonial inter• pretation of what the English inspirational war poets produced, and they did not express any disillusionment with the military-religious dogma of the war. During the Second World War, some Canadian poets produced poetry of a similar type to that which they wrote celebrating the first. But the war years saw the development of a group of young "modernist" poets who followed up the first modernist movement of the Montreal group and New Provinces, and when these poets wrote about war, the idealization of the conflict was not among their aims. -

What brought up the phenomenon of montage? How it is all related to Soviet communication? Why Lenin considered Cinema the most important of all arts? 2) Recruitment posters. 1) A famous Alfred Leete's drawing of the outstretched finger leveled like some revolver was a propaganda image of British Army recruitment campaign during World War I. The poster depicts Lord Kitchene (British Minister of War). 2) A James Montgomery Flagg poster was created shortly after the US entered the WWI. Flagg reinterpreted the image of Uncle Sam, who previously had been portrayed as a sedentary old man, and used it in his iconic poster to encourage enlisting young men in the Army. Flagg himself called his creation "the most famous poster in the world." 3) Compare the famous recruitment posters and outline the distinctive features of the Soviet propaganda style, image, and the idea. The dust, though harsh to feet and eyes and nostrils and fingers, is sweet to the mind because it is the dust of summer; and the linnets sweeten it like a fount breaking out of dry sand. This wind, though soft as sleep, is one of the great winds of the world: it touches the cheek with the tip of a light wing dipped in coolness, though the air is as fiery as it should be at St. Bartholomew-tide. It is no mere afterthought from the first illusion of distant sea: this August air extends from sea to sea over the world, linking the streets and these suburb glades to the upland corn, league beyond league, and to the waves shimmering around the coast.
