    A Pilgrim of Historiography – Ivan Pregnolato A Pilgrim of Historiography: Byron and the Discourses of History in Early Nineteenth-Century Britain Ivan Pregnolato, BA, MA Thesis Submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2015 Page 1 of 363 A Pilgrim of Historiography – Ivan Pregnolato Abstract This thesis aims to understand Byron’s œuvre in relation to the discourses of history in early nineteenth-century Britain. As a contribution to the historicist critical approaches of the past decades, my dissertation discusses the different ideas surrounding the concept of ‘history’ in the first two decades of the 1800s, a period marked by change. As shown, these discourses of history were notorious for their heterogeneity and, by analysing Byron’s poetry and letters, it becomes evident that Byron engaged with these multiple interpretations as well. Roughly, three types of discourses of history are discussed below: the classical knowledge which was perpetuated in the educational system of the time and discussed in travelogues; the whig interpretation of history and the teleological concept of ‘liberty’ through time; and the idea of powerful forces that act ‘behind’ history, such as economics and the inseparability of power embedded in creating historical narratives. This thesis concludes that is impossible to speak of a single Byronic historical narrative and, rather, argues that Byron’s texts espouse pluralistic conceptualisations of history.     Alastair J. Mann The Anatomy of the Printed Book in Early Modern Scotland1 National historiography is victim to physical necessity – the reflection on circumstances within a specified geographical boundary. A degree of ‘historical bias’ may even be required for the survival of the history of the small nation no matter the undoubted value of comparative processes. Nonetheless, a convincing historical approach depends on a balance struck between the study of national core themes and an honest appraisal of the influence of ‘neighbouring nations’.2 In the field of printed book history the character of the Scottish book and book trade must be consistently reviewed in relation to the larger neighbours of continental Europe and the British Isles while simultaneously recognising particular Scottish trends and qualities. While much has been achieved since the 1950s, it is debatable if Scotland’s historiography has studied adequately the national printed book before the Enlightenment with due attention to independent and interdependent development. British book historiography, in spite of recent laudable efforts to consider the Scottish factor before 1560,3 still finds itself prone to generalisations and omissions, and the ‘surprisingly late’ and ‘remarkably small’ criticisms that have, to a degree, stigmatised the study of Scottish book history.4 Yet the position is an improving one, and over the next few years forthcoming editions from the two series ‘The History of the Book in Britain’ (Cambridge University Press) and ‘The History of the Book in Scotland’ (Edinburgh University Press) will help provide much needed thematic surveys of the Scottish scene. Meanwhile, we are left to anatomise Scotland’s ‘inter-communication’ with the print cultures of early modern Europe and inevitably the many contrasting as well as common themes for Scotland in relation to England.5 1 My thanks go to two anonymous referees and the editor of the SHR for suggestions for the improvement of this article.

Sir William Wake 8 Bt – Bedford 1774-84 Seats: Courteenhall, Northamptonshire (built later 16th c., remod. 17th c., inher. by mar. to Jones heiress 1672, rebuilt 1791-95, still own); The Abbey House, Waltham, Essex (built c. 1590, acq. by Jones family 1676 and inher. by Wakes from them 1688, main seat until late 18th c., largely abandoned after 1739, ruinous by 1770) Estates: Bateman 3141 (E) 5810. Owned 62,500 acres in Scotland in 1970. The Scottish estate was sold. Still owned 2,000 acres in Northamptonshire in 2001. Title: Baronet 1621- Notes: The 3rd Wake Bt married the Drury heiress and succeeded to estates in Suffolk 1712-44. The Drurys quite probably accompanied the Conqueror to England. We originally became interested in the union of 1707, and the vast quantity of pamphlets and other printed materials which that union and its subsequent history provoked. Even a superficial examination revealed numerous works in almost every major repository in the United States and in Great Britain; there had never been a bibliographical survey of such works and much confusion existed in contemporary as well as in later histories as to their number and content. Since some major and many more minor figures contributed writings to the Anglo-Scottish debate, both the literary and the political historian face controversy and disagreement in handling Daniel Defoe, Charles Leslie, An• drew Fletcher, George Ridpath, James Hodges, and others. We have gathered them all together here, and will add to the file as more become available. Many of the family histories are hard to find, but some are still available on the antiquarian market. Others are available as Print on Demand; while a few can be found as Google books] GUNDAROO (1972) By Errol Lea-Scarlett, tells the story of the settlement of the Township of Gundaroo in the centre of the Yass River Valley of NSW, AUS, and the families who built up the town. One was William Affleck (1836-1923) from West Wemyss, described as "Gundaroo's Man of Destiny." He was the son of Arthur Affleck, grocer at West Wemyss, and Ann Wishart, and encourged by letters from the latter's brother, John (Joseph Wiseman) Wishart, the family emigrated to NSW late in October 1854 in the ship, "Nabob," with their children, William and Mary, sole survivors of a family of 13, landing at Sydney on 15 February 1855. The above John Wishart, alias Joseph Wiseman, the son of a Fife merchant, had been convicted of forgery in 1839 and sentenced to 14 years transportation to NSW. On obtaining his ticket of leave in July 1846, he took the lease of the Old Harrow, in which he established a store - the "Caledonia" - and in 1850 added to it a horse-powered mill at Gundaroo some 18 months later. He was the founder of the family's fortunes, and from the 1860s until about 1900 the Afflecks owned most of the commercial buildings in the town.

Beard, Professor of Economics Abstract In 1689 the Scottish Parliament overthrew the Church of Scotland’s Episcopal government and replaced it with a Presbyterian church structure. Traditionally, historians have interpreted these events as evidence of the Episcopal Church’s lack of popularity and as symptomatic of a trend towards modernization and secularization within Britain as a whole. The Scottish Episcopal Church: Religious Conflict in the Late Stuart Period suggests a reconceptualization of the period. Far from being unpopular, the Scottish Episcopal Church enjoyed considerable support throughout the country. This had several important implications for not only Scotland, but for Britain and Europe as a whole. The reformation in Scotland was not a fait accompli established with a few acts of Parliament, but rather a protracted struggle over ecclesiology and theology that began in the sixteenth-century with John Knox, George Buchanan, and Andrew Melville; this was an endeavor only truly resolved in the early eighteenth-century. The Scottish Episcopal Church examines this process and explores the continued centrality of religion in politics and society.
