The first edition of the "Sketch of the James Woods Fam ily or Ohio," a :pamphlet of sane seventy-one pages, was printed in 1923. The basis tor that eQition was a thirteen page manu script regarding our ancestors that was ,,r1 tten by Colonel Joseph Jackson ;·iooas (my father) on December 14, 1880, at Moi;itane., Labette County, Kansas, to his ne:phe,;, Hobert N. t,oods of ~a~uoketa, Ja11kson County, Iowa. It was in obe dience to a request 01' Robert's tha"t he make a written re cord of tacts uhich he had related to Robert about ~he fflilily. The family has oeen 1·ortunate in having such an account, tho it is regretted that Colonel \iooa.s aid. not go more in\~ detail regarding some of the state~ents in the account. Later additions were begun in 1912 by Nellie (\;oods) i'hedon, after l~arning of the recor~ left by her rather, and were secured thro consulting histories of Brown ana Clermont Countie~, Ohio, anci. other hi.stories, by a tr:fp to Ohio, correspona.e;ice with various county and c1 ty· of'fi cials, librarians, newspapers, and with many members or -the family scattered about the country, ana pe~sonal in terviews with some of the ala.est ones. "Finis" has been written tor many of them ere this. The added data for this second edit~on were found by ma.king another trip to Ohio in 1936, searching of court house records at Georgetown and Batavia, Oh1o, searching the U.S. Census records 1.n "i,'ashington, D.C., secur!ng :pen sion records, and much correspondence tn obtaining the family accounts brought down to date. Some fe.L1j_lies have been tound, tho a few remain in oblivion. The assistance, which has been given by many, is greatly appreciated. To Ray W. Hill, M.D., of- Osceola, Nebraska, a vote of thanks is due from all the descendants, for his part in securing the :proof ot the Revolutionary ;;ar service of James Woods. A desir.e to present his mother with a D.A.n. membership as a birthday gift, led him to have the neces sary research made to establish the ~root, making member ship in the S •.A.R. and the D.A..R. possible for those who a.esire it. A great debt of gratit·ude is due from all to Maxwell P. Woods of Denison, Texas, collaborator in this work, tor his self-iIIll?osed task or restoring the old family burial plot on the James \foods farm south of Georgeto,"1n, Ohio. It required three trips to Ohio to accom1>lish thi.s. From the wreckage, the stone fence around it has been rebui~t V Vi THE JAMES WOODS FAMILY and an iron ga~e installed, the tombstones reset in con crete, and the D.A.R. marker of James Woods set in place. It is earnestly hoped that sone descendant will see that this burial ~lace of our forebears is ~roperly cared for in the years to come. To Maxwell P. Woods credit is due for some of the his torical· part in this second edition, especially the ac count of the Cra.;ford can:paign in the Revolut.1 onary \/ar, aeouring the James \ioods deed records when in \.-asb.ington, Pennsylvania, eto. His help a.nd encouragement have great ly aided in presen~1ng this little book. For lheir assistance regarding the coat-of-arms, thanks are due to Mr.~. G. Harman ct Plainfield, New Jersey, ror·much research in the New York City Public Library, and to Mrs. E. B. &all, genealoGist of Los Angeles, Cali rorn1a. Errors are unavoidable ana we beg your indulgence ror an7 that may appear. Every effort has been made to se cure correctness in each account. • Undefeated Tavoris Cloud Defends Ibf Light Heavyweight Title Against Jean Pascal on Saturday, Aug
UNDEFEATED TAVORIS CLOUD DEFENDS IBF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST JEAN PASCAL ON SATURDAY, AUG. 11, LIVE ON SHOWTIME® NEW YORK (May 29, 2012) – A light heavyweight world championship showdown—potentially the division’s best matchup in years between two young fighters in their prime—has been confirmed for Saturday, Aug. 11, at Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, when undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (24-0, 19 KOs), of Tallahassee, Fla., defends his title against popular hometown favorite and former World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight titleholder Jean Pascal (26-2-1, 16 KOs) on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live on SHOWTIME®. The co-feature will match budding Canadian knockout artist Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, (18-1, 15 KOs) of Montreal (Canada), against an opponent to be announced in a super middleweight bout. Cloud is known as a no-nonsense power puncher, who comes right at his opponents with few frills. Pascal may not equal Cloud in work rate, but his footwork and explosive combinations make for a compelling matchup between ferocious punchers. Both men will be coming in to not only win, but to make a statement as the best puncher in one of boxing’s glamor divisions. The 5-foot-10, 30-year-old Cloud will be making the fifth defense of the then-vacant 175-pound title he won via 12-round unanimous decision over Clinton Woods on Aug. 28, 2009. The hard-hitting, 29-year-old successfully defended against Glen Johnson (unanimous decision, June 7, 2010), Fulgencio Zuniga (unanimous decision, Dec. 17, 2010) and Yusaf Mack (TKO 8, June 28, 2011) before winning a controversial split decision over Gabriel Campillo in February.
