The first edition of the "Sketch of the James Woods Fam­ ily or Ohio," a :pamphlet of sane seventy-one pages, was printed in 1923. The basis tor that eQition was a thirteen page manu­ script regarding our ancestors that was ,,r1 tten by Colonel Joseph Jackson ;·iooas (my father) on December 14, 1880, at Moi;itane., Labette County, Kansas, to his ne:phe,;, Hobert N. t,oods of ~a~uoketa, Ja11kson County, Iowa. It was in obe­ dience to a request 01' Robert's tha"t he make a written re­ cord of tacts uhich he had related to Robert about ~he fflilily. The family has oeen 1·ortunate in having such an account, tho it is regretted that Colonel \iooa.s aid. not go more in\~ detail regarding some of the state~ents in the account. Later additions were begun in 1912 by Nellie (\;oods) i'hedon, after l~arning of the recor~ left by her rather, and were secured thro consulting histories of Brown ana Clermont Countie~, Ohio, anci. other hi.stories, by a tr:fp to Ohio, correspona.e;ice with various county and c1 ty· of'fi­ cials, librarians, newspapers, and with many members or -the family scattered about the country, ana pe~sonal in­ terviews with some of the ala.est ones. "Finis" has been written tor many of them ere this. The added data for this second edit~on were found by ma.king another trip to Ohio in 1936, searching of court house records at Georgetown and Batavia, Oh1o, searching the U.S. Census records 1.n "i,'ashington, D.C., secur!ng :pen­ sion records, and much correspondence tn obtaining the family accounts brought down to date. Some fe.L1j_lies have been tound, tho a few remain in oblivion. The assistance, which has been given by many, is greatly appreciated. To Ray W.
