Chinese Perspectives on the Dungan People and Language Chinese Perspectives on the Dungan People and Language A Critical Discourse Analysis on the Ambiguousness of the Chinese Ethnicity Kari Fougner Masters thesis in EAL 4090- East Asian linguistics Asian and African Studies: East Asian Linguistics 60 ECTS credits Spring 2012 Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages Summary This thesis treats a broad selection of Chinese academic articles, all of which concern different aspects of Dungan culture and language. The articles are, without exception published in Chinese academic journals after the year 2000. The notion of “Chineseness” as a quality of the Chinese ethnicity, the Zhonghua minzu can be said to be the superior theme of the thesis. However, the research question of the thesis is divided into two. Through my research, the ultimate goal has been to attempt to understand the actual definition of the term Zhonghua minzu and what it signifies to be a part of the ethnicity. Subsequently, the Dungan people have been used as a specific example, as affiliated with China, to better understand how ethnic groups are connected to the Zhonghua minzu. The Dungans, an ethnic group mainly situated in the Central Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, are examined in this thesis within the scope of Chinese academia’s point of view on the notion of “Chineseness”. I have studied how different attitudes regarding ethnicities, especially ethnic minorities, appear within the topical medium, how they shape and are shaped by the social discourse. In my research, one of the main findings in regard to the Zhonghua minzu- the Chinese ethnicity was that the ethnicity in itself did not match the Stalin based criteria traditionally used to define ethnicity within China. Whilst these criteria are based on common psychological makeup, territory, religion, economy and language, the Zhonghua minzu is solely based on a broad and general explanation of what it means to be Chinese: The people of the republic of China and overseas Chinese. This can be interpreted as to be focused on an ancestral bond. Nevertheless, the analysis shows language as integral, if not the most important factor, in terms of determining affiliation with the Chinese ethnicity. Furthermore, the analysis displays how Chinese academia, through different voices and perspectives, imparts both China and various ethnicities a myriad of roles and traits. This will show, both in theory and praxis, how it mirrors the official and unofficial Chinese language politics. Preface Due to my language background being Chinese and Farsi, I wished to write a master thesis in which I could combine these two languages. My original intention was to write a thesis aimed at socio- linguistics of the Sarikoli people, a Persian speaking ethnic minority situated in northwestern China, and the relation between their mother tongue and Chinese. As with many master students, the topic of the thesis was modified and changed several times. Due to an increase in the tension between ethnic minorities in northwestern China and the Chinese government over the last few years it became clear that finding objective information and conducting research on the subject would be difficult at best. As I still wanted to write an assignment where the languages Chinese and Farsi could be combined with language and its function in society, I decided on a topic which merged language, identity and nationalism. The Dungan people, a Muslim ethnic minority of Hui Chinese origin situated in Central Asia whose mother tongue is a dialect based on northwestern Chinese dialects which contain many Persian loanwords became the starting point for my research.     SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV CHOKAN OF WORKS SELECTED SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV Pioneering Ethnographer and Historian of the Great Steppe When Chokan Valikhanov died of tuberculosis in 1865, aged only 29, the Russian academician Nikolai Veselovsky described his short life as ‘a meteor flashing across the field of oriental studies’. Set against his remarkable output of official reports, articles and research into the history, culture and ethnology of Central Asia, and more important, his Kazakh people, it remains an entirely appropriate accolade. Born in 1835 into a wealthy and powerful Kazakh clan, he was one of the first ‘people of the steppe’ to receive a Russian education and military training. Soon after graduating from Siberian Cadet Corps at Omsk, he was taking part in reconnaissance missions deep into regions of Central Asia that had seldom been visited by outsiders. His famous mission to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, which began in June 1858 and lasted for more than a year, saw him in disguise as a Tashkent mer- chant, risking his life to gather vital information not just on current events, but also on the ethnic make-up, geography, flora and fauna of this unknown region. Journeys to Kuldzha, to Issyk-Kol and to other remote and unmapped places quickly established his reputation, even though he al- ways remained inorodets – an outsider to the Russian establishment. Nonetheless, he was elected to membership of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and spent time in St Petersburg, where he was given a private audience by the Tsar. Wherever he went he made his mark, striking up strong and lasting friendships with the likes of the great Russian explorer and geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tian-Shansky and the writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

Since the 1980s, Western scholarship on modern Chinese history has moved away from the narrative of a tradition-bound Middle Kingdom reacting to the dynamism of Japan and the West. A “China-centered” view of modern Chinese history has by now become standard, much to the benefit of historical research.1 In more recent years, Anglophone scholarship on Central Asia has increasingly assumed a comparable orientation, combining indigenous and imperial sources to recenter modern Central Asian history around Central Asian actors. David Brophy’s Uyghur Nation: Reform and Revolution on the Russia-China Frontier, the culmination of a decade of research, represents a major advance in this regard. In a wide- ranging study, Brophy carefully reconstructs the interplay of local elites, intellectuals, community, and state from which the contemporary Uyghur nation emerged: a Uyghur- centered view of modern Uyghur history.2 On the basis of extensive archival, published, and manuscript sources, Brophy has written the fullest and most convincing account to date of the twentieth-century development of the Uyghur national concept. Synthesizing intellectual and political history, he puts persuasively to rest the frequent assertion that modern Uyghur identity was imposed from above by Soviet bureaucrats and passively adopted by its designated subjects. Brophy demonstrates that the Uyghur national idea, and the bureaucratic reification of that idea, emerged from complex negotiations between proto-Uyghur elites and intellectuals, ethnographers of various backgrounds, and Soviet officials on the local and national level.

The dissertation paper explores the place of Oghuz in the ethnogenesis of the Turkic peoples in the context of the history of the Kazakhs, Azerbaijanis, Turkmen, Kyrgyz, and Turks. The relevance of the research. The studied problem reflects one of the topical issues that has a peculiar place both in national history and foreign historiography. Due to the antiquity and deep historical roots of the ethnogenetic process of the formation of the late Turkic peoples, the researchers recognized the direct involvement of the Oghuz clans and tribes in the history of the Kazakhs. In Xinjiang the international lingua franca English, the national official language Mandarin Chinese, and major Turkic languages such as Uyghur and Kazakh interact and compete for linguistic prestige in different social scenarios. The power relations between the Turkic languages, including the Uyghur language, and Mandarin Chinese is one in which minority languages are surrounded by a dominant state language supported through various institutions such as school and mass media. The much greater symbolic capital that the “legitimate language” Mandarin Chinese carries enables its native speakers to have easier access than the native Turkic speakers to jobs in the labor market. Therefore, many Uyghur parents face the dilemma of choosing between maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity and making their children more socioeconomically mobile. The entry of the global language English and the recent capitalist development in China has led to English education becoming market-oriented and commodified, which has further complicated the linguistic picture in Xinjiang.

The researched issues also include the identification of factors provoked by humans and the state to launch these migrations. Surprisingly enough, opposite to the claims made by independent Kazakhstan leadership in the early 2000s, the number of Kazakhs in Kyrgyzstan wishing to become repatriates to their native country is still far from the desired. Thus the article is an attempt to find out what reasons and factors influence the Kazakh residents’ desire to stay in the neighboring country as a minority. To provide the answer, the authors analyzed the dynamics of statistical variations in the number of migrants and the reasons of these changes. The other key point in tracing what characteristic features separate Kazakhs in Kyrgyzstan and their kinsmen in Kazakhstan is the archival data, statistical, historical, and field sources, which provide a systematic overview of the largely unstudied pages of the history of the Kazakh diaspora.

The followers of Islam have a significant impact on ethno-religious, political, economic and cultural relations of the Chinese society. Ethno-cultural heterogeneity of Chinese Islam has defined its confessional identity. The peculiarity of Chinese Islam is determined, firstly, with its religious heterogeneity. In China there all three main branches of Islam: Sunnism, Shiism, and Sufism. That alphabet is referred to by several names: arebica, harfovica, matufovica, matufovača, mektebica. According to Pjanić (2009), several periodicals used arebica: Tarik (1908-1911), Muallim (1910-1913), Misbah (1912-1913) and Jeni Sabah (1914); and also the last publication using Arebica was Seid Serdarević Fikh ʾulʿibādāt (1941). Those two letters are mentioned in descriptions of Bosnian Arebica such as Bourgeois (1913), Lehfeldt (2001), Gažáková (2014). In recent years, there has been interest in Čaušević’s orthography. Notably in works by Al-Zubi and Cicak-Al-Zubi, in the Šegrt Suljica comics published in the Bosnian children magazine Elif. The 062C ARABIC LETTER is used for dž [dʒ] and another letter represents đ [dʑ], for ج JEEM example Al-Zubi and Cicak-Al-Zubi use 0620 ARABIC LETTER AIN WITH and a letter ARABIC LETTER HAH WITH SMALL V ڠ THREE DOTS ABOVE BELOW, which could potentially be encoded if in use, can be found in some character charts.

In this paper, we examine the divergent residential and economic develop- ment of Niujie and Madian, two Hui enclaves in the city of Beijing. Our analysis is based on archival and historical materials, census data, and information collected from recent field work. We show that in addition to social perspectives, geographic factors—location relative to the northward urban expansion of Beijing, and the character of urban administrative geog- raphy in China—are important for understanding the evolution of ethnic enclaves. INTRODUCTION esearch on ethnic enclaves has focused on their residential and economic functions and Ron the social explanations for their existence and persistence. Most studies do not address the role of geography or the evolution of ethnic enclaves, including their decline. In this paper, we examine Niujie and Madian, two Muslim Hui enclaves in Beijing, their his- tory, and recent divergent paths of development. While Niujie continues to thrive as a major residential area of the Hui people in Beijing and as a prominent supplier of Hui foods and services for the entire city, both the Islamic character and the proportion of Hui residents in Madian have declined. We argue that Madian’s location with respect to recent urban expan- sion in Beijing and the administrative geography of the area have contributed to the enclave’s decline.
