Tour de force!By Ricardo AtelierAuthor William Taylor took me around the world, into harm's way, yet left me unscathed in my armchair in his recounting the adventures of Richard Halliburton in this absorbing bio of the writer/adventurer. Five stars for a tale of trial and triumph for a life cut short yet lived with more spirit and intensity than most. As Halliburton introduced fervid readers in the 1920s and 30s to far- off corners of the world and to the classics which inspired his travels, William Taylor shares his zeal, research and fondness for his boyhood hero with us almost a century later. Many detailed references and personal interviews form links in a chain which guides us through a literary and daring labyrinth in this brief yet stellar life.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating account of a fascinating life.By JLisenbeeI loved this gem of adventure and daring! Halliburton filled his short life with more wild endeavors than most of us ever dream of. Well researched and passionately written. I'm now anxious to read some of Halliburton's books too. Thanks, Mr.Taylor, for the brilliant introduction!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The never ending road to romantic travelBy Joseph T. WilkinsRichard Halliburton sat on a Princeton windowsill on a Spring day, stepped out the casement window on to the lawn and took me with him a dozen years before I was even born. His "Royal Road to Romance," "Flying Carpet" and "Seven League Boots" fired my boyhood dreams so powerfully they resonate still. Author Bill Taylor has brought back those dreams in his wonderful, intensely researched and highly readable biography of Halliburton, "The Shooting Star meets the Well of Death" which is a must-read for anyone ever inspired by Halliburton's travels and tales. A first- rate read by a first-rate biographer.

AMAZING STUNTS, IMPROBABLE ADVENTURES, BEST-SELLING AUTHOR-RICHARD HALLIBURTON WAS ALL OF THESE AND SO MUCH MORE AS THIS CAREFULLY RESEARCHED, EXCITING BIOGRAPHY SHOWS. "...entertaining and very well-researched...This book should be high on any traveler's reading list."-Ian Usher (traveler, writer, adventurer, speaker - author of Life Sold). "...an interesting and sometimes funny book about a man who should have a book next to Lindbergh and Earhart."-Henry H. Holden, author of "Great Women in Aviation #2 - Florence Lowe "Pancho" Barnes. PRINCETON GRADUATE HALLIBURTON VAULTED ONTO THE BEST SELLER LIST WITH HIS FIRST TRAVEL/ADVENTURE BOOK AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. HE BLASTED OUT SIX MORE OF THE SAME DESPITE INNER CONFLICTS AND BATTLES WITH CRITICS THEN VANISHED IN WAGNERIAN SPLENDOR WHILE SAILING A GAUDY CHINESE JUNK INTO A 1939 PACIFIC TYPHOON. "...Was Halliburton a daring adventurer...or...a dilettante who...staged spectacular stunts?...Both...are true...and this is the fascination of his paradoxical personality."--Jerry Camarillo Dunn, Jr., longtime writer for the National Geographic Society, author of My Favorite Place on Earth. "...we hope many readers will share our memories of this unique man and his adventures, and welcome this fine work into your libraries."-Robert J. Gormley, former publisher Northeastern University Press, Orbis Books and Chatham House Publishers; Beatrice Gormley, author of YA biographies including the forthcoming Nelson Mandela, Simon Schuster, 2014). "Taylor...revives the memory of this dashing debonair of derring-do. A welcome addition to the libraries of all aficionados of adventure literature. Bravo."-Scott Wallace, author of The Unconquered: In Search of the Amazon's Last Uncontacted Tribes

From the AuthorRichard Halliburton influenced me greatly from the time as a boy when I first read his fascinating tale of Henry Christoph, the black king of , in "Richard Halliburton's Book of Marvels: the Occident." That a "red- blooded" adventurer such as Halliburton could also be an intellectual who quoted "delicate" poets such as and in addition to loving operas, history, and fine paintings puzzled and intrigued me. The combination of these proclivities and the lure of his writings constituted a fascinating paradox. The puzzle followed me into later life. I tried to sort out the real Halliburton and what made him the unique person he was. I found as time passed that he had as many detractors as fans. Some pictures painted of him were of a vain, arrogant poseur who manufactured "adventures" then passed them off as having actually happened. Other followers were captured and enthralled by his riotous embracing of life itself and his frenzied pursuit of Youth. Few occupied the land in between. Clearly, his life was a mystery which begged solving. I made that attempt, had a great time along the way, and feel I achieved my goal. I wanted to share the details with armchair adventurers who would thrill to and appreciate the details of this remarkable and thoroughly unique life.I discovered Halliburton as a teenager (more than a while ago) and the fascination and appreciation of his writings stuck with me throughout the years. In 1999 I began a lengthy research to find out more about him and his intriguing, sometimes puzzling, life. My quest started with traveling to Memphis where I had lengthy conversations with James Cortese, retired Sunday Editor of the Commercial Appeal and Bill Short of where I pored over Halliburton's artifacts. The trail then led to Roanoke and Mike Blankenship, and avid collector of Halliburtonia. Mike and I drove down to Meadows of Dan, Virginia where we spent pleasant and informative hours with Juliet Halliburton Davis, Richard's first cousin. Afterwards I traveled to Hollywood Hills and Laguna Beach to enjoy three days with Bill Alexander who was the architect and builder of Halliburton's Hangover House. I also found the time to go to the Princeton library twice to read Richard's family letters and to the Lilly Library in Bloomington, Indiana, twice to pore over correspondence between Richard and the publisher of his seven books, Bobbs-Merrill Company. After considerable writing, re-writing and soul searching, my book, "A Shooting Star Meets the Well of Death, Why and How Richard Halliburton Conquered the World," found its voice when published by Moonshine Cove Publishing.
