He received his Associate of Arts Degree from Hagerstown Junior College in 1971 and was awarded Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 1974. Judge Young obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1977. In 1978, he began an appellate clerkship with the late Honorable Judge David T. Mason, Associate Judge, Court of Special Appeals of Maryland. In 1980, Judge Young joined the staff of the Baltimore City Solicitor’s Office as an Assistant City Solicitor. He was appointed by Governor Harry Hughes to the District Court of Maryland for Baltimore City in December, 1985. In December 1995, Judge Young was appointed to the Circuit Court for Baltimore by Governor Parris N. Glendening and elected to a fifteen year term in 1996. Judge Young is active in a number of civic and professional organizations. He is one of the founders of the Second Generation Foundation which was established to provide financial assistance to minority students at his alma mater, the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Family and Children’s Services of Central Maryland; the Board of Managers of the Druid Hill YMCA and the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Central Maryland. In 1996, Judge Young served on the Maryland Foster Care Court Improvement Project Implementation Committee and in 2006, was named the Committee’s Vice-Chairman and has chaired its Training Subcommittee since 1996. He has received numerous honors and awards including being selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men in American in 1977 and, in 1992, Outstanding Alumnus by University 4 of Maryland Baltimore County. In February 1996, Judge Young received the Harrison J. Bryant Religious Service Award from Bethel AME Church. In September 1996, he was named outstanding alumnus by Hagerstown Junior College. In 1998, he was named Volunteer of the Year by the YMCA of Central Maryland. In 2006, Judge Young received The American Bar Associations Scripps Howard Foundation Distinguished Service to Literacy Award. In 2009, he received the 2009 Leadership in Law Award from the Maryland Daily Record. Judge Young previously served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law where he taught legal writing and Moot Court. Since 1996, Judge Young has been a member of the Foster Care Court Improvement Project (FCIPP) Implementation Committee which endeavors to improve the performance of juvenile courts in child abuse and neglect cases. He also serves on the Juvenile Law Subcommittee of the Family Law Committee which seeks to enhance the performance of the juvenile courts in delinquency cases. For the past seventeen years he has been chair of the Training Subcommittee of the Foster Care Court Improvement Project (FCCIP) which oversees the specialized training of judges and masters who preside in juvenile cases. In addition to his civic activities, Judge Young is the Pastor of Adams Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was licensed to preach in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in May 1996 and Ordained an Itinerant Elder in April 2003. Judge Young was awarded a Master of Divinity Degree by Virginia

    COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.
