It is a 537 bedded multi- specialty pediatric institute attached to Madras Medical College, Chennai . . It caters mainly to lower and middle income population of city of Chennai and adjoining districts of .' Tarh,il Nadu and other states. The out-patient strength on an average is 2500 per day and there are dedicated Pediatric and Newborn Emergency departments to ensure "Zero -delay" in initiating patient care. As this is a referral institute, many sick newborns and children are referred here requiring resuscitation and stabilization, advanced critical care, surgical interventions and also monitoring. All these interventions require substantial manpower in forms of skilled and unskilled personnel and many essential equipments. Nearly a decade ago, a substantial inflow of funds, of more than RS.20 crores was made available through Japanese aid which went a long way to procure many essential equipments and upgrade the institute to deliver state-of-art care to the poor, needy children on par with private institutions. There is a need for fresh inflow of funds to the tune of Rs. 15 crores to replace many of these instruments and to procure new ones to meet the ever increasing demand for health care. Government of Tamil Nadu is ear marking nearly Rs. 50 lakhs per annum for the institute to purchase and maintain equipments. . Recently Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned an additional RS.2.3 crores and Thiru. Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, Hon'ble Minister for Information, Govt. of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned Rs. 1.7 crores from his constituency development fund to procure many life saving equipments. Needles to say, this will act as a big boost to enhance the quality care to children attending this institute. This function is organized to inaugurate these life saving equipments made available to ICH & He. The main beneficiary departments of the equipments from department of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Tamil Nadu are Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric surgical department and Cardio-thoracic surgery department. Pediatric intensive -care unit gets life saving equipments from the constituency develoPlTIent fund ofThiru. Parithi I1amvazhuthi, Hon'ble minister for information, Government of Tamil Nadu. Early identification and correct management of this condition will help these children to lead a normal life without handicap. Club foaUs a birth defect seen in children. A nodal training centre for club foot management under Pediatric Orthopedic department will also be inaugurated in this function. Voluntary organizations that have been helping the institute in a big way are also being honored in this function. EKAM, an NGO has been helping in procuring equipments such as cell counter, updating isolation facilities in the pediatric cancer ward and lending a helping hand in meeting some unexpected sudden demands in patient care. EKAM is also providing food at subsidized rate for the attendants of admitted children and donated 120 cots for children and air-conditioners for operation theatres. In this function we would also like to thank other organizations like Rotary Club and Lions Club who are helping this institute. This function is also aimed to celebrate the starting of super specialty course of DM neonatology and neonatal nursing course from this year. Government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned an 8 storey-building with 300 additional beds to meet the increasing demand for child health care. INAGURATION ()F NODAL CENTRE FOR SPECIALISED TREATMENT FOR CLUB FOOT FIRST OF ITS KIND IN SOVTH INDIA The Department of Pediatric Orthopedics of Govt. Childrens' Hospital Egmore, Chennai was started in 1975 to cater the needs of the children specifically to treat congenital anomalies, childhood infections and fractures. Over the period of years it has become an important tertiary centre for treatment of club foot and other orthopedically related congenital anomalies. Clubfoot is a complex foot deformity readily apparent at birth. All clubfoot is not of the same severity, although all have the basic components. It may occur as an isolated disorder or in combination with other associated anomalies. The incidence is 1 to 2 per 1,000 live births with more male babies is affected. It may affect both feet in 50% of children. Increased incidence is noted in children with the family history of clubfoot. The involved foot is smaller, deformed and weaker than the opposite side. The deformities are inward facing of sole with the inner border of foot facing upwards with a lifted heel. This deformity_le-ads to severe -handicap unless corrected early hence, the goal of treatment in clubfoot deformity is to obtain and maintain the foot in n01111alposition. Treatment is started immediate"ly on diagnosis preferably within the l5t week of life. A total of 3750 C..lSCS have been treated in our centre and 2250 cases have been operated and deformity cOlTected successfully. The fact that this institution has a very high success rate in handling club foot has been recognized. In this centre, the Orthopaedic surgeons of Tamil Naju will be trained in Ponseti method of treatment. Cure Club Foot worldwide and Lion's club have joined hands with us in our ongoing efforts to treat and rehabilitate these children.
