VEERARAGHAVAN * The history of health care in colonial India was for long a neglected field of study. However, in recent years interest in the history of medicine and its role during the period of British rule has been growing, as is evident from the increasing number of studies published.' While some attempts have been made to draw the broad outlines of the development ofhealth policy at both an all-India level2 and at regional levels,3 the policies on specific diseases have received far less attention.4 This is particularly true of malaria. There is as yet no detailed history ofanti-malarial measures in colonial India.5 Our desire to fill this gap in the existing literature on the history of health care is the basic motive for this paper, which attempts to trace the various anti-malarial steps taken by the government of Madras during the early decades of the twentieth century. We begin with a brief background to the nature of health care policy in the Madras Presidency and a summary ofthe debate on the nature ofanti-malarial measures taken in the years following the discovery of the anopheles mosquito. दक्षिण रेलवे/Southern Railway चेन्नैमंडल/Chennai Division No.PUB/MAS/2019/Press release Date. 22.11.2019 प्रेस क्षवज्ञप्ति / PRESS RELEASE CHENNAI DIVISION REVAMPS CHENNAI EGMORE RAILWAY STATION Chennai Egmore Railway Station, hailed as ‘Gateway to South’ is the second terminal and a largest railhead in the city of Chennai registering thousands of footfalls every day. The railway station is all set to get completely renovated under the Station Redevelopment programme. Chennai Division of Southern Railway has initiated the work of providing enhanced passenger amenities at the station at a cost of Rs.20 Crores sanctioned by Railway Board. The works are already in progress and expected to be completed by 31.03.2020. Three Waiting Halls, duly renovated with improved amenities have been proposed to be provided at Chennai Egmore, i.e., a Pre-paid AC Waiting Hall, an Upper Class Waiting Hall and a Second Class Waiting hall. Pre-paid AC Waiting Hall and Second Class Waiting Hall will be equipped with disabled-friendly toilets, Baby feeding room and Dress Change room. AC dormitories and Retiring rooms at the first floor of the station building are also being renovated and works are under progress. The renovated AC dormitory will be equipped with 14 beds. 16 Retiring Rooms (8 AC & 8 Non-AC ) will also be commissioned and works are underway. 3 nos. of lifts are being provided at Platform No.4 for ease of access to the AC waiting hall, AC dormitories and Retiring Rooms located in the first floor of the station building. To facilitate ease of access for passengers from circulating area/concourse to the Platforms, five new escalators will be installed at Chennai Egmore Station. -

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu is located in the South East of India and lies at a mere 6.7m above mean sea level. Chennai is in a vulnerable location due to storm surges as well as tropical cyclones that bring about heavy rains and yearly floods. The 2004 Tsunami greatly affected the coast, and rapid urbanization, accompanied by the reduction in the natural drain capacity of the ground caused by encroachments on marshes, wetlands and other ecologically sensitive and permeable areas has contributed to repeat flood events in the city. Channelized rivers and canals contaminated through the presence of informal settlements and garbage has exasperated the situation. Natural and man-made water infrastructures that include, monsoon water harvesting and storage systems such as the Temple tanks and reservoirs have been polluted, and have fallen into disuse. -

INTRODUCTION 1. Government of Tamil Nadu has proposed to implement the World Bank supported Tamil Nadu Sustainable Urban Development program (TNSUDP) to improve the delivery of urban services. The provision of Storm Water Drains to selected areas of Corporation of Chennai is one of the sub-projects proposed to be implemented by the Corporation of Chennai (CoC). This component is coordinated by Government of Tamil Nadu with Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd. (TNUIFSL), Chennai as the fund Manager. This sub project is proposed to be implemented along the roadsides and canals and doesn’t involve any Land Acquisition and required land is owned by the Corporation of Chennai. 2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 2. The Storm Water Drainage project for the selected areas of Corporation of Chennai proposed to be taken up under the TNSUDP involves construction of storm water drains and canals in the project area. This sub project proposed to be implemented in the 4 Zones of the CoC. The total length of the drains to be constructed is about 270.33 kilometres including the 11.05 km length in the canals. -
