Short title and Commencement [No.33.6 of 2018] ACT REFERRED TO Mercantile Marine Act 1955 (No. 29) 2 AN BILLE UM THOIRMEASC AR THEIRIPÍ TIONTÚCHÁIN, 2018 PROHIBITION OF CONVERSION THERAPIES BILL 2018 Bill entitled An Act to prohibit conversion therapy, as a deceptive and harmful act or practice against 5 a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and, or gender expression. Be it enacted by the Oireachtas as follows: Interpretation 1. In this Act— “conversion therapy”— 10 (a) means any practice or treatment by any person that seeks to change, suppress and, or eliminate a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and, or gender expression; and (b) does not include any practice or treatment, which does not seek to change a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and, or gender expression, or 15 which— (i) provides assistance to an individual undergoing a gender transition; or (ii) provides acceptance, support and understanding of a person, or a facilitation of a person’s coping, social support and identity exploration and development, including sexual orientation-neutral interventions; 20 “sexual orientation” refers to each person’s capacity -

“NO ROOM IN HISTORY”: GENRE AND IDENTIY IN BRITISH AND IRISH NATIONAL HISTORIES, 1541-1691 A dissertation presented by Sarah Elizabeth Connell to The Department of English In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of English Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts April 2014 1 “NO ROOM IN HISTORY”: GENRE AND IDENTIY IN BRITISH AND IRISH NATIONAL HISTORIES, 1541-1691 by Sarah Elizabeth Connell ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University April 2014 2 ABSTRACT In this project, I build on the scholarship that has challenged the historiographic revolution model to question the valorization of the early modern humanist narrative history’s sophistication and historiographic advancement in direct relation to its concerted efforts to shed the purportedly pious, credulous, and naïve materials and methods of medieval history. As I demonstrate, the methodologies available to early modern historians, many of which were developed by medieval chroniclers, were extraordinary flexible, able to meet a large number of scholarly and political needs. I argue that many early modern historians worked with medieval texts and genres not because they had yet to learn more sophisticated models for representing the past, but rather because one of the most effective ways that these writers dealt with the political and religious exigencies of their times was by adapting the practices, genres, and materials of medieval history. I demonstrate that the early modern national history was capable of supporting multiple genres and reading modes; in fact, many of these histories reflect their authors’ conviction that authentic past narratives required genres with varying levels of facticity. -

The Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2017 was published on 7th December. The Bill proposes to make it mandatory that workers are provided with their core terms of employment within five days of beginning a job. The legislation will also ban zero hours contracts “in most circumstances”, with exceptions including to allow employers to provide cover in emergency situations or to cover short-term absences. The report has three main parts: a summary of the sector’s economic background; an analysis of the social partner organisations in all EU Member States, with special emphasis on their membership, their role in collective bargaining/employment regulation and public policy, and their national and European affiliations; and an analysis of the relevant European organisations, in particular their membership composition and their capacity to negotiate. The aim of the EIRO series of representativeness studies is to identify the relevant national and supranational social partner organisations in the field of industrial relations in selected sectors. The impetus for these studies arises from the goal of the European Commission to recognise the representative social partner organisations to be consulted under the EC Treaty provisions. Hence, this study is designed to provide the basic information required to establish and evaluate sectoral social dialogue. Objectives of study The aim of this representativeness study is to identify the relevant national and supranational associational actors – that is the trade unions and employer associations – in the field of industrial relations in the education sector, and to show how these actors relate to the sector’s European interest associations of labour and business. -

Unison the trade union for Surrey County Council staff UNISON 2019 ANNUAL CONFERENCE SPECIAL EDITION Paul Couchman – Branch Secretary UNISON Local Government (LGC) and National Delegate Conference (NDC) in Liverpool from 16-21 June saw Surrey branch at its best. We sent a full delegation and some visitors and I went along as the regional representative on the national Standing Orders Committee (SOC - the committee which arranges the conference business). Our delegation consisted of Sandy, Kala, Helen, Sheila, George and Alison. We also sent Tanya and Barney (branch caseworker/organisers) along as visitors for a couple of days. And last, but not least, Sheila’s husband Chris came along for the ride. George kicked us off at the LGC on the Sunday with a challenge from the microphone over our motion on Fighting Local Authority Cuts being disallowed from the agenda. Conference voted to refer the issue back to the Local Government SOC and George went to see them with our regional rep, Mark, to argue our corner. Unfortunately, they stuck to their position that our motion could bring the union into legal jeopardy so it didn’t get on. Helen was next – on the first day of NDC she got up to question why the union was not challenging Labour Councils who are implementing cuts and why we were not pushing a strategy of non- compliance with the cuts. -
