It was developed to introduce students in a two-year Wildlife Technology program to the characteristics, evolu- tionary history, classification, adaptations, ecology, and natural history of mammals. Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington D.C. 409 pp. COURSE DESCRIPTION This is a comprehensive course in basic mammalogy. Lectures emphasize the characteristics, evolutionary history, classification, adaptations, ecology, and natural history of mammals. Field techniques for the study of mammalian biodiversity and abundance are emphasized in the laboratory. Students design and implement research projects and apply the scientific method to test hypotheses. 1 Course Outline COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Understand the significance of the major evolutionary innovations in the ancestors of mammals. 2. Comprehend the benefits and limitations of physiological and neurological adaptations of mammals, particularly as they relate to interactions between mammals and their environment. 3. Appreciate the complex reproductive strategies and social behavior of mammals. 4. Appreciate mammalian diversity, and identify the general traits of major groups of mammals. 5. Identify many of the species of mammals native to the western U.S. 6. Gain a working knowledge of the basic ecology and conservation biology of mammals. 7. Use wildlife survey techniques for identifying sign, evaluating biodiversity, assessing habitat associations, and estimating population densities of mammal species at selected study sites. 8. Conduct very basic quantitative analyses of ecological data. 9. Formulate hypotheses and design a research project to test a hypothesis. 10. Write a research paper that reports the results of a study in a format of a scientific journal. 2 Course Outline STUDENT ASSESSMENT The level of comprehension and mastery of the material by the students will be evaluated through classroom discussions and by monitoring the performance of students in laboratory exercises, exams, and additional duties and assignments. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Snakes move through cluttered habitats and tight spaces with extraordinary ease, and consequently snake robots are a popular design for such situations. The remarkable locomotor performance of snakes is due in part to their diversity of locomotor modes for addressing a range of environmental challenges. Concertina locomotion consists of alternating periods of static anchoring and movement along the snake’s body, and is used to negotiate narrow spaces such as tunnels or bare branches. However, concertina locomotion has rarely been implemented in snake robots. In this paper, the anchor formation process in live snakes during concertina locomotion is quantified and used to implement concertina locomotion in a snake robot, with automatic detection of the width of the tunnel walls to modulate the waveform. This allows effective concertina locomotion in tunnels of unknown width, without prior knowledge of tunnel geometry, expanding the range of gaits in snake robots. INTRODUCTION The elongate, limbless body plan is extremely common throughout nature, in both vertebrate and invertebrates alike (Pechenik, J. A. 2005; Pough, F. H. et al. 2002), and has evolved independently numerous times (Gans, C 1975).     SLITHERING LOCOMOTION DAVID L. HU() AND MICHAEL SHELLEY∗∗ Abstract. Limbless terrestrial animals propel themselves by sliding their bellies along the ground. Although the study of dry solid-solid friction is a classical subject, the mechanisms underlying friction-based limbless propulsion have received little attention. We review and expand upon our previous work on the locomotion of snakes, who are expert sliders. We show that snakes use two principal mechanisms to slither on flat surfaces. First, their bellies are covered with scales that catch upon ground asperities, providing frictional anisotropy. Second, they are able to lift parts of their body slightly off the ground when moving. This reduces undesired frictional drag and applies greater pressure to the parts of the belly that are pushing the snake forwards. We review a theoretical framework that may be adapted by future investigators to understand other kinds of limbless locomotion. Key words. Swimming, flying and walking have received much attention [1, 9]withthe latter being the most commonly studied means for moving on land (Fig. 1). Comparatively little attention has been paid to limbless locomotion on land, which necessarily relies upon sliding. Captive females attained sexual maturity at an age of 9\p=n-\16months and con- ceived for the first time when 10\p=n-\25months old. Adult females were polyoestrous but did not cycle while lactating or when isolated from males. The length of the cycle varied from 17 to 42 days (mean \m=+-\s.d. 31\m=.\2\m=+-\6\m=.\5days; n = 43) and females experienced 3\p=n-\7 sterile cycles before conceiving. Pregnancy lasted for 93\p=n-\94days (93\m=.\5\m=+-\0\m=.\6days; N = 4) and litter intervals varied from 296 to 500 days (385 \m=+-\60\m=.\4;n = 10). Litter size varied from 1 to 3 (1\m=.\5\m=+-\0\m=.\66;n = 165) and the well-developed precocial young weighed 300\p=n-\400g (351 \m=+-\47\m=.\4g; n= 19) at birth. Captive females reproduced throughout the year with most litters (78\m=.\7%;n = 165) being produced between August and March. Introduction Cape porcupines (Hystrix africaeaustralis) inhabit tropical forests, woodlands, grassland savannas, semi-arid and arid environments throughout southern Africa. Despite this widespread distribution little attention has been given to these nocturnal, Old World hystricomorph rodents, which shelter and breed in subterranean burrows, rock crevices and caves. NATURAL HISTORY Taxonomy: There are six recognized subspecies of Yuma Myotis 1. Because of distributional uncertainties, it is unclear which subspecies occur in Wyoming. In general, the subspecies M. y. yumanensis occurs in the southern Rocky Mountains, while M. y. sociabilis occurs in the northern Rocky Mountains 1, 2. Description: Yuma Myotis may be difficult to identify in the field, even by skilled observers. The species is a small vespertilionid bat, but medium in size among bats in the genus Myotis. Pelage color is variable across the species’ range. Dorsal fur is short, dull, and varies from gray and brown to pale tan in color. Ventral fur is lighter in color, white or buffy. The ears, wing, and tail membranes are pale brown to gray 1. Males and females are identical in appearance, but females may be significantly larger than males in some populations 1.     LOWER COLORADO RIVER BAT MONITORING PROTOCOL Patricia Brown, Ph.D. January 2006 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND European man has drastically changed the natural habitat of the Lower Colorado River (LCR) over the past 150 years. Dams for power, flood control and water export; bank stabilization and channelization have altered the flow and flood patterns, salinity and plant communities of the LCR. The destruction of the native vegetation, most notably the cottonwood/willow riparian, and its replacement by exotics, especially salt cedar continues unabated. Over the past 50 years, declines have been observed in some bat species, such as the cave myotis (Myotis velifer) and Townsend’s big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii), that were at one time relatively abundant along the LCR. Large deposits of the distinctive guano of these colonial species are found in abandoned mines that border the LCR, although the bats are now absent or present in very small numbers. Only four maternity colonies of cave myotis and one maternity colony of Corynorhinus are now known along the LCR. The Arizona myotis (Myotis occultus) appears to have disappeared from the LCR, with the last museum specimen collected in 1945. The type locality for this species was Ft. Mojave north of Needles. One hypothesis for the decline of some bat species is the removal and replacement of native floodplain vegetation that supported the insect diets of these bats. Another is the heavy pesticide spraying in agricultural areas (conducted principally at night) that directly reduces the preybase and indirectly poisons the bats. A third possible cause is the disturbance of roosts of colonial bat species by the increased resident and recreational human population along the Colorado River.
