I would like to welcome the traders, producers, scientists, researchers from around the world that are attending this remarkable exposition and conference. As stated by Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations “Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all, it offers a framework to generate economic growth, achieve social justice, exercise environmental stewardship and strengthen governance”. I would like to address these issues on this occasion with regards to UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life below water, which is of particular relevance to this event. This goal effectively encapsulates the need for a comprehensive approach to fisheries and aquaculture that is inclusive of small-scale farmers and artisanal fishers. Sustainable management of ocean ecosystems is imperative for ensuring sustainable fisheries. Stewardship must balance priorities between growth and conservation, and between industrial and artisanal fisheries and aquaculture, ensuring equitable benefits for all. As aquaculture iv is the fastest-growing food sector, the sustainable and responsible development of this industry will play a key role in meeting the demand for safe and nutritious food by a growing population. I am sure that the conference and exposition will address these key issues facing us including governance; education and training; the sustainable intensification of aquaculture; response to climate change; sustainable fisheries; seafood, post- harvest technology and food safety; and gender issues. Last but not least, the Government of Thailand through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives would like to avail itself the best regards and cordial greetings to the Organizing Committee and wishes you all greater achievement and success in your ongoing contribution to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture for the people of ASEAN and for the people of the world. General Chatchai Sarikulya Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand v Message from the Director General, Department of Fisheries Southeast Asia is one of the world’s major fisheries-producing regions. In 2012, ASEAN fish production reached nearly 40 million tonnes, increasing from 27.2 million tonnes in 2008. The total fisheries production of ASEAN consists of 18.4 million tonnes of wild-caught fish (46%) and 21.2 million tonnes of farmed fish (54%). In total, fisheries production in ASEAN represents around 22% of global fisheries production. The FAO report The State of the World Fisheries and Aquaculture indicated that in 2014 world capture fisheries production was 91 million tonnes, whereas world aquaculture production was 67 million tonnes valued at US$ 137.7 billion. The Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (AFAF) is one of the important activities of the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS). The forum plays an important role as an international platform for distinguished scientists from all over the world to discuss the issues pertaining to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Asian Region. The forum has been convened ten times to date, around the globe. The Department of Fisheries, Thailand, in collaboration with the Asian Fisheries Society, GLOBEFISH, INFOFISH, the Network of Aquaculture Centres in the Asia- Pacific, and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center and partners are proud to host the ASEAN Fisheries and Aquaculture Conference and Exposition 2016: ASEAN Seafood for the World and the 11th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum: Asian Food Security for the World from 3 to 7 August 2016, at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre. We welcome traders, producers, scientists, researchers from around the world to attend this remarkable exposition and forum. vi It is expected that the deliberations and sharing of experience by scientists, experts and managers at the conference and forum will make a significant contribution to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Adisorn Promthep Director-General Department of Fisheries vii Message from the President, Asian Fisheries Society On behalf of the Asian Fishery Society, I would like to express my sincere congratulations on the opening of the ASEAN Fisheries and Aquaculture Conference and Exposition 2016: ASEAN Seafood for the World & 11th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum: Asian Food Security for the World. According to FAO reports, many millions of people around the world find a source of income and livelihood in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The most recent estimates indicated that 58.3 million people were engaged in the primary sector of capture fisheries and aquaculture in 2012. Of these, 37 percent were engaged full time, 23 percent part time, and the remainder were either occasional fishers or of unspecified status. In 2012, 84 percent of all people employed in the fisheries and aquaculture sector were in Asia. Fish and fishery products play a critical role in global food security and nutritional needs of people in developing and developed countries. Fish provided more than 2.9 billion people with almost 20 percent of their average per capita intake of animal protein, and 4.3 billion people with about 15 percent of such protein. If sustainably developed, fisheries and aquaculture can generate lasting benefits for global food security and economic growth, but the fisheries and aquaculture sector is facing major challenges. We all have a role to play in order to enable fisheries and aquaculture to thrive responsibly and sustainably for present and future generations. In this regard, the Department of Fisheries, Thailand, the Network of Aquaculture Centers in the Asia-Pacific (NACA), the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Regional Office for the Asia and the Pacific (FAO RAP), GLOBEFISH, INFOFISH, and the Southeast Asian Fisheries viii Development Center (SEAFDEC) are working together to convene this remarkable forum and exposition for Asian food security. The forum provides an international platform for distinguished scientists, researchers, traders, producers from all over the world to discuss the issues pertaining to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific Region. I am sure that the forum will promote sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture in Asia and in the world. The Asian Fisheries Society (AFS) is a non-profit scientific society founded in 1984 by fishery professionals in Asia. The society aims at promoting networking and co-operation between scientists, technicians and all stakeholders involved in fisheries and aquaculture production, research and development in Asia.
