Financial Report < 76 > RESEARCH REPORTS 4 2017 RESEARCH REPORTS 5 2017 Introduction The year 2017 was filled with outstanding scientific work. A change in position of the Institute Dire- ctor occurred on May 31: Prof. RNDr. Pavel Bosák, DSc. was replaced by RNDr. Tomáš Přikryl, Ph.D. The selection of new director is always a complicated procedure, governed by the Act on Public Re- search Institutions and by the Statute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. A special committee for the tender was elected by the Institute Board on January 2017. The committee collected information on 2 candidates and evaluated it at its meeting at the beginning of April. One week later, the Institute Board in a secret ballot finally elected the new director, who was later approved by the Academic Board of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Furthermore, new Institute Board and Supervisory Board have been established. Publication activity of the Institute staff highly improved, also thanks to new investments. As was already mentioned in 2016, the Department of Geological Processes succeeded in the Aca- demic tender for high-cost scientific equipment and purchased an excimer laser (193 nm, Cetac/ Teledyne company). It was introduced in the LA-ICP-MS laboratory in a combination with the previously acquired ICP-MS (Element2) mass spectrometer. This department was also successful in the Academic tender for high-cost scientific equipment for 2017 and 2018: the thermal ioniza- tion mass spectrometer (TIMS) was purchased in 2017 and installed in a specially equipped laboratory. It is now in full operation and will contribute to the development of the most advanced analytical methods used in geology. In addition, the Thermo ScientificNicolet iS-50 Fourier-transform infra-red spectrometer (FTIR) has been acquired to the Department of Analytical Methods in 2017. The Institute personnel succeeded in a tender for grant projects in the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR), obtaining funding for three projects (2018–2020). The increase in institutional financing for 2017 enabled to increase salaries by 10 % on average. International cooperation in research and development of new methods continued successfully and intensively. Popular science, especially within the complex project Strategy 21 of the Czech Academy of Sciences, was expanding rapidly again. Pavel Bosák Head of the Executive Board RESEARCH REPORTS 6 2017 2. Abstract: The paper presents the results of an analysis of ichthyofaunal variability throughout the section of the Menilite-Krosno Series (MKS) in the Outer Carpathians of Poland. The studied tanathocoenoses were formed at the bottom of a more than 2,000 m deep northern basin of the Tethys, being largely represented by the continental rise and bottoms of its narrow furrows, and – to a lesser degree – the continental slope and slopes of a submarine high. Lateral variability of statististically representative assemblages of tanathocoenoses hosted in thin, isochro- nous horizons is interpreted as a result of both local changes of ichthyocoenoses and the influence of post-mortem relocation of fishes that mainly dwelled the shelf and upper continental slope. Vertical variability, in turn, is considered as a resulting from changeable conditions of the ecological environment, the input and outflow of taxa whose evolution proceeded in the Indo-Pacific area, and the species extinction.     PROF. DR. ANTONÍN FRIČ (30. 7. 1832 – 15. 11. 1913) V letošním roce si připomínáme sté výročí úmrtí vynikajícího českého přírodovědce Antonína Friče. Jeho činnost zasáh- la do několika oborů přírodních věd , a to především ornitologie, ichtyologie, hydrobiologie, geologie a paleontologie. V některých z nich, zvláště paleontologii, si vydobyl mezinárodní věhlas. Fričova profesní dráha byla od samého počátku pevně spjata s nově vznikajícím Národním (tehdy Vlasteneckým) muzeem, jehož rozvoj výrazným způsobem ovlivnil, později jako ředitel zoologických a geologicko-paleontologických sbírek. Byl také řádným profesorem Univerzity Karlovy a jedním z nejaktivnějších členů Komitétu pro přírodovědecký výzkum Čech. Mnohé vědecké práce, publikované před více než sto lety, jsou dodnes jako výchozí podrobné monografie používány jak profesionálními, tak amatérskými badateli. Ve své profesní kariéře se Frič neomezoval jen na vědecká pojednání, ale sous- tavně se věnoval i popularizaci vědy a především díky ní zaujal širokou veřejnost. Nepřímo tak vychoval mnoho mladých přírodovědců a pro sbírky Národního muzea vlastními sběry, mezinárodní výměnou i nákupy získal velké množství mimořádně cenných exponátů. K Fričovým stěžejním vlastnostem patřila cílevědomost, pracovitost, praktický vztah k řešení problémů a vysoké nároky kladené jak na sebe, tak na své kolegy. Z toho občas pramenily neshody se svým okolím, ale je nutné mít na paměti, že právě tyto vlastnosti ho předurčily k úspěšné vědecké kariéře. Bez nich by česká i světová věda byla ochuzena o velice hodnotné výsledky jeho práce. 111 This year, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of an exemplary Czech natural scientist, Antonín Frič. His activities reached into many fields of natural science, primarily ornithology, ichthyology, hydrobiology, geology and paleontology.

    The fish fauna of the Dynów Marl Member (Menilite Formation, Poland): paleoenvironment and paleobiogeography of the early Oligocene Paratethys Małgorzata Bieńkowska-wasiluk The Dynów Marl Member of the Menilite Formation in Poland is one of the most significant lithostratigraphic units containing fauna of the early Oligocene Paratethys. The fish fauna from this member is presented, including three shark taxa and eight teleost taxa. The connection between the Upper Rhine Graben and the Central Paratethys in the calcareous nannoplankton zone NP23 (about 30–32 Ma ago) is consistent with the occurrence of the teleost Anenchelum glarisianum and the shark Keasius parvus. The presence of the teleosts Scopeloides glarisianus, Vinciguerria obscura and Oligophus moravicus confirms the connections between the Eastern and Central Paratethys. The distribution of the ichthyofauna supports the existence of a marine connection between the North Sea, the Upper Rhine Graben, the northwestern Tethys, and the Central and Eastern Paratethys during the early Oligocene. The fish assemblage shows a high percentage of fishes, whose extant relatives are living in the depth interval between 0 and 500 m. The presence of Gonostomatidae, Phosichthyidae and Myctophidae indicates normal salinity in the deep pelagic life zones.
