Financial Report 177 In thousands of Czech Crowns (CZK) 177 RESEARCH REPORTS 4 2007 & 2008 RESEARCH REPORTS 5 2007 & 2008 1. Introduction The year 2007 represented an important legislative milestone for the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Former state-control- led research institutes were transformed into so-called public research institutions (“veřejná výzkumná instituce“ in Czech, abbreviated as v. v. i.). According to the Act adopted by the Czech Parliament, such institutions should be dominantly financed from public resourc- es, i. e. those coming through different ways from the state budget. It is expected that this legislative act permits a less restricted and less bureaucratic flow of the money, which is now covered by one budget and can be divided according to the needs of individual institutions (with some limitations, of course). The legislation also modified the style of Institute management. Instead of a direct management by the Institute Director, Executive and Advisory (Supervisory) boards were established, and the Director is now the CEO of the Institute. The Institute Executive Board partly took the agenda of the former Scientific Council (which was cancelled), i. e. the approval of all scientific projects, international co-operation and agreements, and it partly deals with economic-management issues within the limits strictly stipulated by law (approval of budget and its changes, internal regulations, changes on top positions in the Institute structure, selection of the Director). The Board is elected by the Assembly of Institute Scientists and consists by at least ⅓ of non-institution employees. The Advisory Board has a control function and deals with financial, property, investment etc. issues. The Board is appointed by the Academy Head Office and it is com- posed of non-institution persons, except for one Institute representative. The practical everyday life of the Institute of Geology has not changed much but all internal regulations had to be transformed, and a new financial code was established during 2007 and early 2008. The other important event was the completion of the construction project for a new institute building. The preparatory stage started already in mid-2001 but the lack of finance and the necessary administrative steps have delayed the construction that should be finalized during summer 2009. On November 2007, construction started by demolition of one of three existing buildings and excavation for new foundations. We had to move the whole library to be housed in the facilities of the Labo- ratory of Physical Rock Properties. During 2008, the building skeleton was completely erected. We believe that the new building will not only help Earth Science scholars to work in better condition but to a new consideration of geology as one of the traditional disciplines. Scientific life of the Institute has continued in the same manner as during the last few years. The number of approved grant projects and international publications has slightly increased and this trend is continuing even this year. The mid-term evaluation of the Institute of Geology was highly positive and matched the best Czech research centers involved in Earth studies. The variety of the themes and re- sults solved during 2007–2008 are presented in this volume. The number of employees remained approximately the same as in previous years, in spite of minor fluctuations. We hope that the positive trends will continue in the next years, as concerns both the relatively favorable economic conditions and the scientific output. We also decided to change the long-time published Annual Report to Research Reports with the aim to deal more with the results and achievements of the Institute staff rather than with administrative news. We hope that you, our readers, will welcome such change. Zanechal nám své nádherné fotografie, kterými svůj vztah k městu dokazoval a kterými obdarovával své přátele a známé. Ty nám ho budou stále připomínat a oživovat vzpomínky na něj. Občané, vzpomínejte s námi! • Notes on Nucula
[ 629 ] Notes on Nucula. By Kyosuke Hirasaka. Professor of Zoology, Imperial University, Formosa. With 5 Figures in the Text. THESEnotes record the result of work done at the Plymouth Laboratory during the summer of 1926. They deal chiefly with the feeding habits of Nucula, a Proto branch possessing the type of feeding mechanism characteristic of that order, and not found in any other Lamellibranch. During the course of my work I found VIes' interesting paper on the sense organ of Nucula. After studying the organ, I arrived at a different interpretation of its function from that reached by VIes. I owe very much to the kindness of the Director and other members of the staff of the Laboratory, and am also indebted to Professor H. G. Cannon for friendly advice. Three species of Nucula, common in the vicinity of Plymouth, were used, namely, N. nucleus, N. radiata, and N. nitida. Much important work has been done on Nucula nucleus, the most common European species, as well as on N ucula proxima and N ucula delphinodonta, which live on the American side of the Atlantic. Of course, many characters are common to these species, but not all. The material used was dredged in 20 to 30 fathoms off Plymouth by the research steamer" Salpa," N. nucleus"being the most abundant species. The Nucula were kept alive in a small glass dish with a little of the mud that was collected with them. A current of water from the general <tquarium supply was provided, and the animals remained quite healthy during the two and a half months of my stay at the Laboratory.

A framework of ichthyofaunal ecostrati- graphy of the Oligocene–Early Miocene strata of the Polish Outer Carpathian basin. Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae, 76: 1–111. Abstract: The paper presents the results of an analysis of ichthyofaunal variability throughout the section of the Menilite-Krosno Series (MKS) in the Outer Carpathians of Poland. The studied tanathocoenoses were formed at the bottom of a more than 2,000 m deep northern basin of the Tethys, being largely represented by the continental rise and bottoms of its narrow furrows, and – to a lesser degree – the continental slope and slopes of a submarine high. Lateral variability of statististically representative assemblages of tanathocoenoses hosted in thin, isochro- nous horizons is interpreted as a result of both local changes of ichthyocoenoses and the influence of post-mortem relocation of fishes that mainly dwelled the shelf and upper continental slope. Vertical variability, in turn, is considered as a resulting from changeable conditions of the ecological environment, the input and outflow of taxa whose evolution proceeded in the Indo-Pacific area, and the species extinction. Changeability of ichthyofauna within a ca.

The Cretaceous record of the nuculid bivalve Acila (Truncacila) Grant & Gale, 1931, is established for the first time in the region extending from the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, southward to Baja California, Mexico. Its record is represented by three previously named species, three new species, and one possible new species. The previously named species are reviewed and refined. The cumulative geologic range of all these species is Early Cretaceous (late Aptian) to Late Cretaceous (early late Maastrichtian), with the highest diversity (four species) occurring in the latest Campanian to early Maastrichtian. Acila (T.) allisoni, sp. nov., known only from upper Aptian strata of northern Baja California, Mexico, is one of the earliest confirmed records of this subgenus. ‘‘Aptian’’ reports of Trun- cacila in Tunisia, Morocco, and possibly eastern Venzeula need confirmation. Do tábora jsme dorazili kolem páté hodiny odpolední. Vyhrál každý, kdo došel do cíle.

Historie existuje v projevu.

Ekrt, B. (2014): Late Cretaceous nautilid juveniles of Cymatoceras reussi and Eutrephoceras aff. sublaevigatum – scarce fossils under risk of pyrite degradation. – Acta Mus. Nat. Pragae, Ser. B, Hist. Nat., 70(3-4): 143–152, Praha. ISSN 1804-6479. Abstract. The syntype collection of “Nautilus reussi” has been subject to a detailed revision resulting in confirmation of at least provisional validity of the species represented by a single juvenile specimen. This species, restricted now to the Late Coniacian, is inserted into the genus Cymatoceras Hyatt, 1884. The rest of the collection differs from the original description and is left separately as Eutrephoceras aff. sublaevi- gatum, being considered juveniles of the species. The lithology, geographic and stratigraphic position of the type locality of Cymatoceras reussi (FRITSCH IN FRITSCH ET SCHLÖNBACH, 1872) as well as the other sites are discussed here. The valuable material is endangered due to pyrite degradation as relics of this unstable sulphide are still at present hidden in the secondary limonitic material. The degradation products cause volumetric expansion resulting in formation of crevices and loss of integrity.
