This study examined the associations and differences among soil, sediment and water specific activities of long-lived radioactive element (LLRE). Gamma spectroscopy was used to measure the concentration of the LLRE along the Mini Okoro/Oginigba Creek, Port Harcourt. Specific activities of three selected LLRE were derived. Correlation analysis was carried out to examine associations among the specific activities across different substrates. A strong and a significant negative correlation exists between the specific activities of Water 40K and Soil 232Th (r =-0.721, p<0.05); Water 238U and Soil 238U (r = -0.717, p<0.05) and Water 40K and Sediment 238U (r=-0.69, p<0.05). Comparison using Mann-Whitney U test shows that, soil and sediment are similar in their specific activities with Z values of -0.408, -1.209 and -1.021 (p > 0.05) for 40K, 232Th and 238U respectively. The concentration of solid samples (soil and sediment) is different from the liquid (water) samples. These associations can be attributed to some specific underlying factors. The purpose of this study is therefore to explore the reality of tourism managements in Plateau State, Nigeria with the aim of ascertaining the sponsors of ecodestinations; perceived viability of tourism activities; and tourists’ behaviour towards gate fee increments in Assop falls, Naraguta Tourist Village, Jos National Museum and Zoo, Rayfield Resort, Pandam and Jos Wildlife Parks which are functional ecotourism destinations in Plateau State.Ten communities bordering these ecodestinations were selected based on ownership and impact on tourism site. Listing of households in selected communities was done and ten percent of households in each community were sampled. Information for the study were elicited using three sets of structured questionnaire. In all, 410 households were sampled. Fifty percent of staff of each ecodestination was also sampled while 40 tourists were sampled in each ecodestination. A total of 240 tourists and 335 staff respondents were interviewed.

A 50% reduction in the River mean channel width, full- bank discharge and the stream power was found. Channel siltation occurred due to high sediment fluxes from rapid urban processes versus reduced stream power of the river. Water hyacinth invasion, domestic waste dumps and narrow culvers constricted the river channels. Finally, an impaired river status was found and extinction projected by 2043. Recommended were correction and monitoring exercises to check activ- ities along the river channel and to restore the head stream wetlands. The results showed that the concentrations of NO 2 and SO 2 ranged from 0 – 0.3ppm in both seasons. The mean concentration of SO 2 at 0m and high traffic density stations were higher than the mean concentration at 50m and low traffic density stations. The difference in mean concentrations between dry and rainy seasons, traffic density and distance were not significant for NO 2 but significant for SO 2. The concentration of NO 2 and SO 2 recorded at the study stations exceeded the permissible limits of 0.004ppm and 0.01ppm respectively, recommended by the Federal Ministry of Environment and therefore poses serious threat to the environment particularly small farms and gardens around major roads. The levels of NO 2 and SO 2 around the gardens were influenced by traffic density, seasonal variations and distances from major roads, therefore authorities should embark on sensitization and enlightenment campaigns; farming activities and raw consumption of exposed vegetables, crops and fruits should be discouraged in the study areas.

Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria *Corresponding author (E-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT This paper reports the benefits, which selected stakeholders derive from amenity trees in Port Harcourt Zoo, Nigeria. Two sets of structured questionnaires were administered for data collection among some stakeholders - tourist (99) and residents in the neighbourhood (98), between August and November, 2015. The trees encountered were identified while their benefits to respondents’ were noted and co-ordinates carefully recorded with GPS equipment and subsequently mapped. Results revealed that 41.4% of the tourists were attracted to the park by trees and animals, 39.4% were attracted by the serenity and cool breeze derived under and around the trees. Some tourists visited for collection of plant parts for medicine (18.0%). Benefits derived from the amenity trees by the neighbourhood around the zoo include: cool breeze (35.0%), serene/scenic view of the environment (21.0%), noise reduction (26.0%), games/ bird viewing (10.0%) and local medicinal plants collection (8.0%). In all, 84 amenity trees were encountered in the zoo park comprising 29 species belonging to 18 families. Identified stakeholders were observed to derive environmental, psychological, social and livelihood support benefits from the amenity trees. The recreation centers were geo-located using global positioning system (GPS). Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyzed data in this study using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 20.0 version. Nearest neighbour analysis was used to determine the spatial distribution pattern of recreation centers using ArcGIS 10.1. Findings revealed that twenty seven outdoor recreation centers were identified in the study area in which 66.7% were owned by government and 33.3% were privately owned. However, 18.5% of total recreation centers were found in Obio/Akpor LGA while 81.5% were found in Port Harcourt LGA. The spatial distribution pattern of recreation centers was slightly clustered (Z=0.266; p=0.790). The study recommended that policymakers should always provide for open spaces where recreation exercises should take place in order to generate revenue for government.
