Hymnographi Latini Bernhardns Morlanensis, Monachus Cluniacensis, urn 1140. Bernhard von Morlas Heimat diirfte, da er ausdriicklich als Fraucigena bezeichnet wird, nicbt zu Morlaix in der Bretagne, sondem in Morlas (oder M<lrlac, beute Morlaa.,), der alten Hauptstadt von Be11rn, zu sucben sein. Ober die Zeit seiner Geburt wie iiber seine Lebensschicksale sind wir ohne jede Nacbricht. Wir erf11bren nor, dafs er unter Peter dem Ebrwiirdigen, dem er sein Carmen de contemptu mundi widmet, Monch iu Cluny war. Die Verfasser der Histoire Literaire de Ia France unterscheiden ibn aus· driicklich von Bemh11rd von Cluny, der unter Abt Hugo die Consuetudines Cluniaeenses aufzeichnete, sowie von einem andcren Cluniacenser gleicben N!\mens, Bernhard dem Dicken, Grofsprior von Cluny, dem Peter der Ehr· witrdige ein Epitaphium dichtete (Migne PP. LL. 189, 40), wiihrend Bran· mitller (Wetzer und Welte 2. Aufl. II, 435 u. f.) die Identitiit mit letzterem Bernhard fiir sicber, mit ersterem fiir wabrscbeinlicb hilt. Vgl. Histoire Literaire XII, 236 sqq. Unter den poetischen Werken Bernhards von MorlM ragcn zwei be­ senders bervor, sein Gedicbt · de Contcmptu mundi ltDd das s. g. Mnriale, das nacbfolgend znm Abdrucke kommt. Ersteres, ein umfangreiches Lehr· gt-dicht in einer Spielart des leoninischen Hexameters gcschrieben, ist schon friibzeitig durch den Druck vervielffiltigt, zuerst 1482 in Puis "in magna domo C11mpi Gaillardi"; gekfirzt ebendaselbst nRpnd Guidonem Mercatorem" (Liron, Singularites historiques Ill, 484). Flacius Illyrikus nahm es in ~eine "Varia doctorum piorumque virorurn de corrupto ecclesiae statu poemata" B:o~sel 1.556 auf, Nathan Chytriius und Elhard r.ubin veranstalteten ('igene Ausgaben, Bremen 1597, Restock 1610 (Vgl. Leyser 413). Das MAriale wurde zuerst von Hommey in seinem Supplementum patrum (Paris 1684), 168-180 herausgegeben, der sicb in einer eigenen Dissertatio bemiihte, die Autorscbaft des hi. Bernhard von Clairvaux nltchzuweisen, in· tlem er zablreicbe parallele Stellen 11us Bernhards Pro~a beibraebte. Neuer· dings hat Ragey denselbf'n Weg bescbritten, indem er ein gleiches mit Stellen aus den Werken Anselms von Canterbury versucht, den er fiir den Dichter des Mariale erklirte (Sancti Anselmi, Cantuariensis arcbiepiscopi }fariale seu liber precum metricarum. Londini [1884)). Auch von dcm Ver· sucbe Rageys gilt mutatil1 mutandis das Urtcil, welches die Verfll8ser der Histoire Literaire iiber den Hommeys aussprecben, werm sie von dem }fariale sagen: "eerit, que le P. Hommey s'efl'orce en vain de revendiquer a l'abbe de Clairvaux" (1. c. p. 241'. Anselm wird durch die Verskuust des Mariale ausgescblossen, welche von der 8einen verschie<len, mit der BemhardR o1 91t1zed by Goog le 424 von Morlas dagegtm auffalJend verwandt ist. Das entscheidendtte Argument Rageys, nicht urn Auselms Verfasserschaft zn begriinden, wohl aber um die der heiden Beruharde auszuschliefsen, beruht auf Tiiuschuog. Er behauptet niimlich Cod. Londinen. 21927, der Bruchstiicke des Mariales enthi.lt, gehlire dem 11. Jahrbundert an, sei somit alter als Bernhard. Rev. H. M. Bannister hat auf meine Bitte das Alter der Handschrift gepriift und von drei anderen kompetenten Beurteilern priifen lassen; aile wcisen die Handschrift einstimmig in die Mitte des 12. Jahrbunderts zuriiek. Schon Haureau hat instinktiv an der Richtigkeit der Behauptung R~~geys gezweifelt (Vgl. Des Poeme, Latins attribues A Saint Bernard p. 87). Er fafst sein Urteil iiber die An­ Hpriiche der heiden Kirchenl~hrer an das Mariale spiter dahin zusammen: "Le poeme Ut iucundas cenms trnd{JS .•.. n'est certes pas plus de Saint Aneelme que de saint Bernard A qui d'autres copistes l'ont attribue" (Notices et extraits V, 51). Trotz der verechiedenen Ausgaben des Mariale, beziiglich derer ich auf llaure11u an ersterem Orte S. 82 verweise, auch trotz der Rageys von 1884, ist die vorliegende die erste mit kritischem Apparate.     Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Howard Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen This dissertation analyzes the three main protagonists of Lucan’s Bellum Civile through their attempts to utilize, resist, or match a pattern of action which I call the “formula.” Most evident in Caesar, the formula is a cycle of alternating states of energy that allows him to gain a decisive edge over his opponents by granting him the ability of perpetual regeneration. However, a similar dynamic is also found in rivers, which thus prove to be formidable adversaries of Caesar in their own right. Although neither Pompey nor Cato is able to draw on the Caesarian formula successfully, Lucan eventually associates them with the river-derived variant, thus granting them a measure of resistance (if only in the non-physical realm). By tracing the development of the formula throughout the epic, the dissertation provides a deeper understanding of the importance of natural forces in Lucan’s poem as well as the presence of an underlying drive that unites its fractured world. Its author was Sir George Hill, who had studied the collection in depth when it was still T in Dreyfus' hands in the Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris. In a prefatory note, Hill observed that 'keenly as Gustave Dreyfus appreciated all his beautiful things, he had a particularly soft place in his heart for the Italian medals, and ... he would have agreed with the German critic who declared that the medallic art was par excellence the art of the Renaissance, the expression of the quintessence of the spirit of that age.' The preface continues with the tribute: 'His was perhaps the finest collection that has ever been in the hands of a private collector - the "perhaps" might be omitted, but that it is difficult to range the great collections in a true perspective.' Thanks to the Kress Foundation, the Dreyfus collection of medals was not dispersed, like so many other medallic collections, but is preserved intact in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, where it bears out Hill's claim to be regarded as the finest private collection of medals ever to have been formed.

The School-master also is here printed from the " English Works of Roger Ascham," collated through out with the earlier editions, which have furnished several important corrections of the text. This work was first published by Mrs Ascham, small 8vo, 1570, after her husband's death : a fac-simile of IV PREFACE. the title to that edition is prefixed to the work in the present reprint. The School-master was again printed in 1571, 1573, 1579, 1583, 1589, these editions vary very little the one from the other. It was again published, with notes by the Rev. James Upton, London, 8vo, 1711, and reprinted 1743.

Attending to various phases of his writings, this work explores the systematic structure of Augustine’s tenets on passions and on the freedom from passions in the context of his philosophical and theological convictions on the issue of amor sui and amor Dei. The analysis begins by examining Augustine’s language of passions and the doctrinal connections between Augustine and his predecessors. I provide a survey of Augustine’s usage of emotional terms and criticise the position that Augustine suggested a dichotomy between passio and affectus as well as the claim that none of Augustine’s Latin terms can be justifiably translated by the modern term “emotion”. On the basis of terminological and doctrinal observations, I clarify the general features of Augustine’s psychology of passions in Chapter 2. In addressing the issue of how Augustine transformed his predecessors’ therapy of passions and their ideal of freedom from emotion into his theological framework in Chapter 3, I examine a series of related concepts, such as propatheia, metriopatheia, apatheia and eupatheia, to determine how he understood them in various stages of his philosophical and theological thinking.

The constitutive regulations concerning the order derive from the late fourth century in the canons of the Synod of Laodicea and the Apostolic Constitutions. The order of the singer was established in eastern Christendom, while in the West, it never was added to the ranks of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. There, the members of other ecclesiastical grades answered for the psalmody, although allusions to singers occasionally appear. The study period extends to the seventh century CE. The development of both ecclesiastical singing and the hierarchy is treated from the beginning of the history of the Church. This is necessary for identifying the standing and the role of the singer, whose order emerges rather late in comparison with other ecclesiastical orders. One of the earlier orders belongs to the reader, who is considered to have preceded the singer, but also to have been one, as all reading was performed in recitation. The study also aims to define why a separate order of the singer was needed, if the reader was able to execute these duties as well. The materials include both normative – the canons of ecclesiastical councils and synods, and church orders – and descriptive sources, the latter consisting primarily of the texts of the patristic authors.

    THE BRITONS IN LATE ANTIQUITY: POWER, IDENTITY AND ETHNICITY EDWIN R. HUSTWIT Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Bangor University 2014 Summary This study focuses on the creation of both British ethnic or ‘national’ identity and Brittonic regional/dynastic identities in the Roman and early medieval periods. It is divided into two interrelated sections which deal with a broad range of textual and archaeological evidence. Its starting point is an examination of Roman views of the inhabitants of the island of Britain and how ethnographic images were created in order to define the population of Britain as 1 barbarians who required the civilising influence of imperial conquest. The discussion here seeks to elucidate, as far as possible, the extent to which the Britons were incorporated into the provincial framework and subsequently ordered and defined themselves as an imperial people. This first section culminates with discussion of Gildas’s De Excidio Britanniae. It seeks to illuminate how Gildas attempted to create a new identity for his contemporaries which, though to a certain extent based on the foundations of Roman-period Britishness, situated his gens uniquely amongst the peoples of late antique Europe as God’s familia. The second section of the thesis examines the creation of regional and dynastic identities and the emergence of kingship amongst the Britons in the late and immediately post-Roman periods. It is largely concerned to show how interaction with the Roman state played a key role in the creation of early kingships in northern and western Britain. The argument stresses that while there were claims of continuity in group identities in the late antique period, the socio-political units which emerged in the fifth and sixth centuries were new entities.
