  • The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen
Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Howard Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen This dissertation analyzes the three main protagonists of Lucan’s Bellum Civile through their attempts to utilize, resist, or match a pattern of action which I call the “formula.” Most evident in Caesar, the formula is a cycle of alternating states of energy that allows him to gain a decisive edge over his opponents by granting him the ability of perpetual regeneration. However, a similar dynamic is also found in rivers, which thus prove to be formidable adversaries of Caesar in their own right. Although neither Pompey nor Cato is able to draw on the Caesarian formula successfully, Lucan eventually associates them with the river-derived variant, thus granting them a measure of resistance (if only in the non-physical realm). By tracing the development of the formula throughout the epic, the dissertation provides a deeper understanding of the importance of natural forces in Lucan’s poem as well as the presence of an underlying drive that unites its fractured world. INDEX OF PERSONS page 300 INDEX OF ARTISTS page 306 PREFACE HE first and only catalogue of the collection of medals formed by Gustave Dreyfus appeared in I93 I. Its author was Sir George Hill, who had studied the collection in depth when it was still T in Dreyfus' hands in the Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris. In a prefatory note, Hill observed that 'keenly as Gustave Dreyfus appreciated all his beautiful things, he had a particularly soft place in his heart for the Italian medals, and ... he would have agreed with the German critic who declared that the medallic art was par excellence the art of the Renaissance, the expression of the quintessence of the spirit of that age.' The preface continues with the tribute: 'His was perhaps the finest collection that has ever been in the hands of a private collector - the "perhaps" might be omitted, but that it is difficult to range the great collections in a true perspective.' Thanks to the Kress Foundation, the Dreyfus collection of medals was not dispersed, like so many other medallic collections, but is preserved intact in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, where it bears out Hill's claim to be regarded as the finest private collection of medals ever to have been formed.

A Different Kind of Closet: Queer Censorship in U.S. LGBTQ+ Movements since World War II By James Martin Abstract: Since World War II, there has been an increased visibility of LGBTQ+ communities in the United States; however, this visibility has noticeably focused on “types” of queer people – mainly white, middle class, cisgender gays and lesbians. History remembers the 1969 Stonewall Inn riots as the catalyst that launched the movement for gay rights and brought forth a new fight for civil and social justice. This paper analyzes the restrictions, within LGBTQ+ communities, that have been placed on transpersons and gender nonconforming people before and after Stonewall. While the riots at the Stonewall Inn were demonstrative of a fight ready to be fought, there were many factors that contributed to the push for gay rights.

Elizondo was born in San Angelo, Texas. Assigned male at birth, she knew she was “feminine” from the age of 5. Due to the lack of awareness of transgender people, Elizondo grew up believing she was gay. She was sexually assaulted by an older man and suffered bullying and name calling from her peers. At age 14, Elizondo moved with her family to San Jose, California. Around the age of 16, she found refuge at Gene Compton’s Cafeteria in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, where she became a regular. It was one of the few places in the city where drag queens and transgender women could congregate publicly. In 1966, three years before Stonewall, it became the site of one of the first LGBT riots in U.S. history. The Compton’s Cafeteria riot was led by a group of transgender women against police harassment. Elizondo joined the Navy at age 18 and volunteered to serve in Vietnam. She decided, “If the military couldn’t make me a man, nothing would.” While serving, she realized she would always be attracted to men and told her commanding officer that she was gay.

Synopsis Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight tells the astounding life story of San Francisco living legend Vicki Marlane, still strutting it onstage at 74. Vicki takes us on the ride of her life — from cross-dressed rollerskating in her youth to working the carnival sideshows circuit in the 1950s, from the wild years of San Francisco in the 1970s, to survival in the 1980s and her legendary performances at Aunt Charlies, where she continues to perform today. Through video documentation of Marlane’s performances, archival images of her glory days, and first-person interviews with Marlane and her circle of friends, fans and co-workers, Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight tells the remarkable story of America’s oldest professional transgender entertainer. Vicki recounts her childhood as a poor Minnesota farm boy who ran away, more than half a century ago, to work as a “hoochie-coochie dancer” and performer in traveling carnival sideshows. Marlane eventually worked her way up into big-time show business as a “female impersonator,” starting out in mafia-controlled nightclubs in Chicago back when lip-synching was still known as “record pantomime.” By the late 1950s, she was performing in drag acts across the nation, and by the mid-1960s, Vicki was a headliner at some of San Francisco’s wildest nightspots.
