Gordon was raised in Los Angeles in a conventional middle-class family save for her brilliant and manipulative older brother, Keller, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia and institutionalized. She moved to New York in with Mike Kelley and struggled to establish herself in the art world. The Conceptual artist Dan Graham suggested that she form an all-girl band to accompany one of his performance pieces. Though the band was a total flop, one of her bandmates introduced her to Moore. The pair became an instant couple and formed Sonic Youth in We strummed and made droning sounds on our guitars. Nevertheless, Sonic Youth got gigs Girl in a Band: A Memoir recorded a cheap EP for a record label run out of an art gallery. As they developed their signature sound, the band won influential fans, including Greil Marcuswho wrote them up in Artforum. After their Girl in a Band: A Memoir, Coco, was born inGordon and Moore decided to leave New York for western Massachusetts — a conscious decision to raise Coco outside of the spotlight. When Gordon might have understandably fallen apart amid revelations of the affair, she recounts experiencing a creative renaissance. She began a new musical partnership with the experimental guitarist Bill Naceand returned part time to L. This book is not flawless. Then Gordon flies back to L. She portrays taking control as a kind of triumph. And in no small way it is. Allyson McCabe teaches narrative nonfiction and writing for radio at Yale University. E-mail: books sfchronicle. When Kim Gordon — bassist in the totemic band Sonic Youth — and Thurston MooreGirl in a Band: A Memoir Youth guitarist, announced their separation and the end of the band inanother woman was involved. Broken-hearted fans and 90s bystanders alike will want to know more, and year-old Gordon — as much of an art-world creature as she is an indie rock totem — is candid about what went down, factually and emotionally. Texts are intercepted. Smutty videos are exchanged. Attempts are made to patch things up. When they broke up, the indie dream shrivelled a Girl in a Band: A Memoir. The observation is telling; it is both visual and quotidian. Here are tales of touring in school holidays, Girl in a Band: A Memoir leaking breast milk, of not bickering with your partner in front of bandmates. Alarmingly, Thurston Moore drives like he plays guitar. To react to Keller was to be targeted anew, and Gordon writes movingly about taking on classic female roles — conciliation, self-effacement — but wrestling free of them through art and music. People will come to this memoir for the gory details of who did what to whom, but there are greater truths to be savoured: how one woman made unconventional art and domestic bliss work, more or less, for 27 years. Spike Jonze graduates from filming skateboarders to making pop videos via Sonic Youth. Kurt Cobain is depicted as a bundle of fury and haunted gentleness. Throughout, Gordon is front and centre, solo — a suburban, middle-class girl, but complicated. Part connected alterna-celeb, part watchful outsider, she makes some peace here with her own background. Essays — Peer Reviewed ZoneModa Journal. Vol. 7 (2017) https://doi.org/10.6092/issn.2611-0563/7585 ISSN 2611-0563 Sonic Youth: celebrity DIY Alice Militello Pubblicato: 29 dicembre 2017 Abstract In New York City’s early ’80s music scene and beyond, the band Sonic Youth represents a special case of the celebrity’s concept. It cannot be reduced to the record sales or scandals, like other famous people. They don’t have the typical self-destructive streak of the stars of the show business, which is the basis of the fortune and, at the same time, the defeat of other musicians. They don’t even have the cult of personality, which has destabilized other crews of the time. However Sonic Youth, during their three decades of career, have been able to find a space in the music scene, to involve a broad segment of audience and lovers; becoming a kind of model for younger generations of musicians. Furthermore, the members of Sonic Youthcan be considered such as influencers ahead of his time, thanks to their ability to find new talents. The present study aims to analyze the concept of celebrity applied to the Sonic Youth language, from 1981 (starting year) to 1994, the year of Experimental Jet Set, Trash No Star album, which brings the group to that DIY (Do-It-Yourself) punk ethics that denotes them from the beginning; to plot the New York’s environment in which they fit; and how the entry into the mainstream world changes the aesthetics of the group. In other words, the research is a breakthrough of the band’s long career, marking the highlights that made them the Sonic Youth.

  • Tony Oursler Sound Digressions: Spectrum 08 Sept > 28 Oct 2017 Press Release
TONY OURSLER SOUND DIGRESSIONS: SPECTRUM 08 SEPT > 28 OCT 2017 PRESS RELEASE Tony Oursler belongs to the generation which renewed the use of video by freeing it of the limits inherent to the television screen. His works cannot be reduced to the video image itself but are made of complex systems which are at the borders between sculpture, drawing, installation and performance. He is one of the essential figures in the recent history of multimedia and video art and he has been deeply involved with sound production since the 1970s. He composed and designed many soundtracks for his video tapes and installations throughout the years. Many of these have been released in various forms. He also founded the band The Poetics with Mike Kelley and has collaborated with many musicians, notably, Tony Conrad, Kim Gordon, Glenn Branca, David Bowie, Thurston Moore, Jim Shaw, Arto Lindsay, and Beck. HITHERTO UNSEEN INSTALLATION AT GALERIE MITTERRAND While at California Institute of the Arts, Oursler studied with John Cage and worked with the Paik-Abe synthesizer. These formative experiences are evident in his multimedia work, which often involves chance strategies, which occur in his installations. With the Sound Digressions series, Oursler continues this experiment by working separately with 7 notable performers and combining these recordings in a perpetually phasing, playback system. The resulting installations have the effect of a living, ever changing composition for the viewer. These musical performances, shot in 2005, were originally conceived as raw material for the seven-part series, based loosely on the relationship between sound and the color spectrum.

  • Fanzines and Alternative Music Cultures in Ireland
‘Against The Rest’: Fanzines and Alternative Music Cultures in Ireland Ciarán Ryan Department of Media and Communication Studies Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick This thesis is submitted to the University of Limerick in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisor: Dr Tony Langlois September 2015 Abstract This thesis investigates the role of fanzines in developing music communities in Ireland. It explores these fan-produced texts from the emergence of the first Irish punk fanzines in 1977 to the present, questioning their significance, while critiquing previous studies into fanzine cultures (Duncombe, 2008; Triggs, 2010). It looks at how ‘authenticity’ is a central construct in the design, content, and dissemination of these artefacts, establishing a ‘dominant representational paradigm’ (Hamilton, 1997) for the production and consumption of fanzines. Fanzines are primarily found in alternative music cultures, and this work situates the makers and users as members of local ‘scenes’ (Cohen, 1991; Straw, 1991), and proposes a more fluid or tribal (Maffesoli, 1996; Bennett, 1999) framework, where communities are formed through shared taste (Bourdieu, 1984). Central to this work is the position of capital, particularly Bourdieu’s concepts of cultural capital and social capital. It also examines the role of such capital in developing fan hierarchies, particularly in local music-making activities (Finnegan, 1989). This work crucially positions the fanzine as a fan practice, and the fans that made and consumed these works will be analysed to determine the range of (popular music) fandom (Duffett, 2014) in Irish DIY (do-it-yourself) cultures. Finally, this study explores whether there has been a significant paradigmatic shift in fan media with the emergence of new technologies.

I've always known he was an awesome, extremely intelligent dude with a great sense of humor and a fervent supporter of underground music and literature, but as I learned from Browne's book, the band as a whole has always operated along a similar vibe, have never been particularly moved by the promise of fame and fortune, and have always done whatever the hell they want, professionally and artistically.
