A New Record of Aulacidae (Hymenoptera: Evanioidea) from Korea

With a newly recorded species, P. comptipennis Enderlein, a total of six Korean aulacids are recognized: Aulacus salicius Sun and Sheng, 2007, Pristaulacus insularis Konishi, 1990, P. intermedius Uchida, 1932, P. kostylevi Alekseyev, 1986, P. jirisani Smith and Tripotin, 2011, and P. comptipennis Enderlein, 1912. A key to species of Korean Aulacidae is provided with, redescription and diagnostic characteristics of Pristaulacus comptipennis. Rasnitsyn Abstract—We describe three new genera and four new species (three named) of siricomorph sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) from the Ypresian (early Eocene) Okanagan Highlands: Pamphiliidae, Ulteramus republicensis new genus, new species from Republic, Washington, United States of America; Siricidae, Ypresiosirex orthosemos new genus, new species from McAbee, British Columbia, Canada; and Cephidae, Cuspilongus cachecreekensis new genus, new species from McAbee and another cephid treated as Cephinae species A from Horsefly River, British Columbia, Canada. These are the only currently established occurrences of any siricomorph family in the Ypresian. We treat the undescribed new siricoid from the Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil as belonging to the Pseudosiricidae, not Siricidae, and agree with various authors that the Ypresian Megapterites mirabilis Cockerell is an ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The Miocene species Cephites oeningensis Heer and C. fragilis Heer, assigned to the Cephidae over a century and a half ago, are also ants. Many of the host plants that siricomporphs feed upon today first appeared in the Eocene, a number of these in the Okanagan Highlands in particular. The Okanagan Highlands sites where these wasps were found also had upper microthermal mean annual temperatures as are overwhelmingly preferred by most modern siricomorphs, but were uncommon -

The structure of cynipid oak galls: patterns in the evolution of an extended phenotype Graham N. Stone1* and James M. The most complex and diverse galls are those induced on oak trees by gallwasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cyni- pini), each species inducing a characteristic gall structure. Debate continues over the possible adaptive signi¢cance of gall structural traits; some protect the gall inducer from attack by natural enemies, although the adaptive signi¢cance of others remains undemonstrated. Several gall traits are shared by groups of oak gallwasp species. It remains unknown whether shared traits represent (i) limited divergence from a shared ancestral gall form, or (ii) multiple cases of independent evolution. Here we map gall character states onto a molecular phylogeny of the oak cynipid genus Andricus, and demonstrate three features of the evolution of gall structure: (i) closely related species generally induce galls of similar structure; (ii) despite this general pattern, closely related species can induce markedly di¡erent galls; and (iii) several gall traits (the presence of many larval chambers in a single gall structure, surface resins, surface spines and internal air spaces) of demonstrated or suggested adaptive value to the gallwasp have evolved repeatedly. We discuss these results in the light of existing hypotheses on the adaptive signi¢cance of gall structure. In cases where the foreign species expands in its new habitat, causing environmental and economic damage, then it is classified as invasive. The maturity of foreign species in the new area may also be influenced by climate changes. The detrimental effect of alien species is reflected in the reduction of biodiversity as well as plant vitality. A large number of alien species of insects are not harmful to plants in new habitats, but there are also those that cause catastrophic consequences to a significant extent. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of newly discovered species of insects in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Area of study: Arge ochropus larvae were collected from Rosa canina in Bartın province. Material and Methods: Larvae collecting damages on Rosa canina species, which are distributed in different localities and were brought to the laboratory. Observations were continued and photographed under a microscope. Main results: Arge ochropus (Gmelin, 1790) is a significant pest of cultivated and wild roses in Turkey. Leaf surface is consumed as a result of intense damage of larvae and this affects growth and blooming in the plant. It was observed that the larvae collected from the field were infected by a new parasitoid in the laboratory. This tachinid parasitoid was defined as Vibrissina turrita. Research highlights: Vibrissina turrita (Meigen, 1824) was detected in Turkey as a Tachinidae fauna and Arge ochropus parasitoid for the first time in this study. Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies.
