  • A Comparison of Rating Systems for Competitive Women's Beach Volleyball
Statistica Applicata - Italian Journal of Applied Statistics Vol. 30 (2) 233 doi.org/10.26398/IJAS.0030-010 A COMPARISON OF RATING SYSTEMS FOR COMPETITIVE WOMEN’S BEACH VOLLEYBALL Mark E. Glickman1 Department of Statistics, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA Jonathan Hennessy Google, Mountain View, CA, USA Alister Bent Trillium Trading, New York, NY, USA Abstract Women’s beach volleyball became an official Olympic sport in 1996 and continues to attract the participation of amateur and professional female athletes. The most well-known ranking system for women’s beach volleyball is a non-probabilistic method used by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) in which points are accumulated based on results in designated competitions. This system produces rankings which, in part, determine qualification to elite events including the Olympics. We investigated the application of several alternative probabilistic rating systems for head-to-head games as an approach to ranking women’s beach volleyball teams. These include the Elo (1978) system, the Glicko (Glickman, 1999) and Glicko-2 (Glickman, 2001) systems, and the Stephenson (Stephenson and Sonas, 2016) system, all of which have close connections to the Bradley- Terry (Bradley and Terry, 1952) model for paired comparisons. Based on the full set of FIVB volleyball competition results over the years 2007-2014, we optimized the parameters for these rating systems based on a predictive validation approach. The probabilistic rating systems produce 2014 end-of-year rankings that lack consistency with the FIVB 2014 rankings. Based on the 2014 rankings for both probabilistic and FIVB systems, we found that match results in 2015 were less predictable using the FIVB system compared to any of the probabilistic systems.

  • Beach Volleyball World Championships - Hamburg, Germany
TEAM CANADA PREVIEW 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships - Hamburg, Germany It’s hard to believe that with all of Canada’s international success on the beach, there has never been a medal at the World Championships – at the senior level. Could this be the year? Canada will be represented by five high quality teams in a field of 96 teams (48 men/48 women) at the 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships which run from Friday, June 28 until Sunday, July 7 at the Red Bull Beach Arena in Hamburg, Germany. It’s the same venue that has successfully hosted the last two World Tour Finals. On the women’s side, there are two Canadian pairs with proven pedigree at the world level and either team – or both – could be in the mix for the medals. Canada has another women’s team that has been turning heads through the junior and collegiate ranks as well. At the 2017 World Championships in Vienna, the Canadian duo of Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, ON) and Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, ON) made it to the bronze medal match, but landed 4th after a heart-breaking loss to Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes when the Brazilians took the 3rd set by an 18-16 score. The Pavan/Melissa pairing has spent time at #1 in the World Tour rankings thanks to wins in Croatia, China and Switzerland and has made eight trips to a World Tour podium in just 25 tournaments together. Probably most impressive was the win at the Five-Star Gstaad Major where they went undefeated in six matches including victories over American, Brazilian and German teams - on the march to gold.

2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 - August 4 QUOTES Women's 101: Talita Antunes / Larissa Franca Brazil (1) def. Maria Antonelli / Carolina Salgado Brazil (9) 21-17, 21-17 (0:32) Talita Antunes, Brazil – “I think we are playing good. I can’t say that no one can stop us, but if we play good together and strong, it is hard for anyone to beat us. When I play against Brazil we try to do something different because we know each other so well. We play here on the FIVB Tour and on the Brazilian tour. Today we did better than them. Yesterday when we played Brazil, they served so well. So today for us it was important to be careful about their serves. I think we did our best.” Maria Antonelli, Brazil – “Against this team you cannot have the mistakes that we had. Three points we didn’t concentrate enough and they made the points. We were wanting a better game, but it’s okay. It’s our first World Championship together. Of course I am not happy right now, but they deserve it. Now I hope they win this tournament, they’re the only Brazil team left. So now I cheer for them. We could have played better, but that’s the game. Next time we prepare more and fix what we did wrong. I am proud of my partner and what we did in Austria. A lot of teams lost before us, so let’s think about the future. This is the beginning for me and Carolina.” Carolina Salgado, Brazil – “They are a great team, an amazing team.
