Rethinking Their Wisdom in the Light of Ancient Stoicism and Studies on Ancient Economy ABSTRACT The Wise Man among the Corinthians: Rethinking Their Wisdom in the Light of Ancient Stoicism and Studies on Ancient Economy Timothy A. Brookins, Ph.D. Mentor: Bruce W. Longenecker, Ph.D. Against recent trends, this dissertation argues that the divisive “wisdom” addressed in 1 Corinthians can be characterized most nearly as a Christian development of Stoic philosophy, espoused mainly by a few individuals among the church’s wealthier and more educated members. Though Stoic connections with the Corinthians’ wisdom have long been noted, in considering the possibility of philosophical training in the church no study to date has had recourse to the refined socio-economic data that has emerged over the last ten years. Still less has anyone attempted to cull the full breadth of evidence for the Stoic thesis from across the whole of the letter. The present dissertation attempts to draw all of this data together for the first time. The dissertation unfolds in six chapters. The first chapter offers a general introduction and a history of Corinthians scholarship on “wisdom.” Chapter 2 argues that the regnant, rhetorical thesis (to which the Stoic thesis is offered as an alternative) owes more to its account of the eminence of rhetoric in Corinth’s broader social milieu and to the methodological trends in current Corinthians scholarship than it does to careful analysis of exegetical, lexicographical, and historical details. Chapter 3 addresses the question of methodology. It is argued that reconstruction should begin, not with a mirror- reading of Paul’s denials (e.g., 1:17; 2:1, 4, 13), but rather with the full gamut of Corinthian language quoted and of Corinthian problems narrated throughout the letter. Chapter 4 attempts to construct a profile of the church’s social world, paying especial attention to the socio-economic status of church members and the question whether any may have received some formal philosophical training. Chapter 5 brings the study to its culmination. Treating the full spectrum of Corinthian language and problems seen in the letter, it is argued that an essentially Stoic perspective provides a unifying explanation for all the letter’s dominating topics, and is the only single perspective that can satisfactorily do so. Chapter 6 provides a concluding summary and reflections on why the Stoic thesis has not yet been widely accepted. And countless others at Baylor and Houston Baptist University, both friends and colleagues—to one and all, sincere thanks. xi DEDICATION To Mary Mac, who has shown me daily the superiority of love to human wisdom Omnia vincit amor xii CHAPTER ONE Introduction On this much interpreters have agreed: in 1 Corinthians the divisions plaguing the church had chiefly to do with their understanding of “wisdom.”1 When it has come to profiling this wisdom, however, the landscape of Corinthians scholarship over the last 200 years has shown a stiflingly uneven topography. Amid the shifting terrain, several peaks have stood out. (1) In 1831, F. C. The Stoics, who eagerly affirmed that only bodies exist, crafted an elegant solution to this challenge: not everything that is Something (ti) exists. Rather, some things have a derivative mode of reality they call subsistence: these entities are non-existent in that they are not themselves solid bodies, but they are nonetheless Something physical because they depend on bodies for their subsistence. My dissertation uncovers the unifying principles of Stoic subsistence, and shows how they can account for thoughts and other immaterial entities without running afoul of their physicalist commitments. While all commentators agree that the Stoics posited Something as the highest category of being, they have failed to find a coherent physicalist account of Stoic ontology. For instance, (1) a canonical set of incorporeals (time, place, void, and what is sayable (lekton)) is well attested, but there is little agreement as to what these entities have in common as incorporeals, which makes the category look like an ad hoc collection of left-over entities.

New Testament and Early Christian scholars have long recognized that slaves formed a substantial portion of the earliest Christian communities. Yet there has been extensive debate about manumission, the freeing of a slave, both in the wider context of the Roman Empire and more specifically in Paul’s context. 1 Cor. 7:20-23 is a key passage for understanding both slavery and manumission in Pauline communities, as well as Paul’s own thoughts on these two contentious issues. The pivotal verse is 1 Cor. 7:21. The majority opinion is that Paul is suggesting slaves should become free, i.e., manumitted, if they are able. In order to better understand this biblical passage and its social implications, this project explores the various types of manumissions operative the Roman world: the legal processes and results; the factors that galvanized and constrained manumissions; the political and social environment surrounding manumission in Corinth during Paul’s ministry; as well as the results of manumission as it relates to Paul’s communities.

    Stoicism and Cosmopolitanism Although the term cosmopolitan (κοσμοπολίτης, literally, world-citizen ), was used by Greeks earlier than the Stoic philosophers (who started with Zeno [c. 335-263 BC]), it was these philosophers who took this term and gave it a genuine, “cosmopolitan” meaning, a meaning rather different from its modern usage. Prior to the Stoics Asked where he was from, Diogenes the Cynic (c. 390-323 BC) said, “I am a citizen of the world (in the Greek, kosmopolites ).” The atomist philosopher Democritus said, “To a wise man every land is accessible; for the entire world ( kosmos ) is a good soul’s native land.” Many Greek Sophists held cosmopolitan views. The Sophist Antiphon (d. 411 BC) wrote that “by nature we are all constituted alike in all things, both barbarians and Greeks. This can be seen by consideration of those things which are essential by nature to all men… In these things no barbarian is set apart from us, nor any Greek. For we all breathe into the air through mouth and nostrils…” Stoic Cosmopolitanism Zeno’s earliest and most famous work, Republic , was summarized by Plutarch: Moreover, the much-admired Republic of Zeno, the founder of the Stoic sect, may be summed up in this one main principle: that all the inhabitants of this world of ours should not live differentiated by their respective rules of justice into separate cities and communities, but that we should consider all men to be of one community and one polity, and that we should have a common life and an order common to us all, even as a herd that feeds together and shares the pasturage of a common field.

    Created on 24 June 2009 at 9.31 hours page 245 SIMPLICIUS ON THE REALITY OF RELATIONS AND RELATIONAL CHANGE ORNA HARARI the ancient commentators’ approach to Aristotle’s account of relatives in Categories 7 is shaped by the conception that prevailed in later antiquity, in which relatives are composites of a substrate, i.e. an attribute that belongs to the other categories, and a relation.1 Simplicius shares this conception with the other commentators, but he formulates it in di·erent terms. He calls the substrate on which relational attributes supervene a di·erence (διαφορ) or a character (χαρακτρ) and the supervening relational attribute an inclination (πνευσις).2 In this study I attempt to clarify the significance of this terminology, arguing that through the notion of inclination Simplicius answers the question of the unity of Aristotle’s category of relatives, as formulated in Plotinus’ Ennead 6. 1. 6–9.
